Legal/Policy Perspectives Introduction

In this section, we consider the following laws and policies in order to investigate network privacy protections guaranteed to Stanford students:

• Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA)

• Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA; also known as the Buckley Amendment)

• Stanford’s Student Life/Codes of Conduct/Fundamental Standard/Honor Code/Student Judicial Charter/Judicial Affairs

• Stanford's Principles of Privacy in the University

• Stanford’s Computer and Network Usage Policy

We are primarily concerned with network privacy issues addressing the protection of students from other students, staff and faculty.
