Every prospective PoliSci student must find their own advisor in order to declare the Political Science major. Steps to take when finding a Political Science Major Advisor:
1) Consider asking professors whom you have taken a class with.
2) Research those professors' interests and area specialties online: http://polisci.stanford.edu/research.html
3) E-mail one or two of the professors that interest you and ask when they hold their office hours.
4) Make an office hours appt to talk to them about potential advising.
5) If you have trouble or can't find anyone, e-mail Hana Meckler for suggestions and advice.
Who can be an advisor?
Anyone affiliated with the department and located on this page: http://polisci.stanford.edu/faculty.html
When do I need an advisor?
Your advisor must personally sign your major declaration form and you will not be approved for the PoliSci major until you obtain this signature. All undergraduates must declare their major by no later than the end of Fall Quarter of their Junior year.
Can I change my advisor?
Of course. This is not set in stone, although it is beneficial for you to establish and maintain a relationship. However, you can change your advisor at any time. Simply notify Hana Meckler to make the change official.
How often should I meet with my advisor?
Most students do not actually meet that often. Your advisors should not be involved in the details of your quarterly academic planning, or your overall degree progress. For that, you can e-mail Hana Meckler at any time.
Many students approach their advisors to talk about summer opportunities, quarterly research opportunites, and post-graduation opportunities. Also many advisors typically oversee independent directed readings and are resources for class research papers.
