THE PEOPLE The indigenous people of Papua New Guinea exhibit a simple yet beautiful culture. There are three principal groups in this region: the Negritos, Melanesians, and Papuans. Pidgin is the common dialect for many of the tribes for inter-village communication. The economy of Papua New Guinea is underdeveloped, and the majority of people produce only enough food to satisfy their immediate needs. This hunting and gathering society subsists by hunting, fishing, and cultivating various food staples: sago, fish, bananas, coconuts, and sweet potatoes. There are a few plantations on which vanilla and coffee are produced for export. Agriculture is the most important economic activity in Papua New Guinea; however, for the most part, it is practiced on a subsistence level only. | ||||||||||
