What is Rush?

Rush is the time when we get to know new people and consider asking them to join our fraternity. Phi Psi supports an open rush, which helps to make the process of meeting people more natural.

Our Creed

written by:
John Henry Frizzell and Kent Christopher Owen

I believe that Phi Kappa Psi is a brotherhood of honorable men, courteous and cultured, who pledge throughout their lives to be generous, compassionate, and loyal comrades;

I believe that I am honor bound to strive manfully for intellectual, moral, and spiritual excellence; to help and forgive my Brothers; to discharge promptly all just debts; to give aid and sympathy to all who are less fortunate;

I believe that I am honor bound to strengthen my character and deepen my integrity; to counsel and guide my Brothers who stray from their obligations; to respect and emulate my Brothers who practice moderation in their manners and morals; to be ever mindful that loyalty to my Fraternity should not weaken loyalty to my college, but rather increase devotion to it, to my country, and to my God;

I believe that to all I meet, wherever I go, I represent not only Phi Kappa Psi, but indeed the spirit of all fraternities; thus I must ever conduct myself so as to bring respect and honor not to myself alone, but also to my Fraternity; To the fulfillment of these beliefs, of these ideals, in the noble perfection of Phi Kappa Psi, I pledge my life and my sacred honor.

What does Phi Kappa Psi have to offer?
by Seiji Yamamoto

The Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity is a private association of educated men who endeavor to live honorably and humanely. Its Brotherhood is open to men of talent and character, but to those in particular who as gentlemen feel an affinity with one another in the common ways of college life and, moreover, in the pursuit of excellence. Such men may differ in their origins, backgrounds, and beliefs, and even be set upon diverse purposes, interests, and vocations. Yet as Brothers in Phi Kappa Psi, they are vitally united in their dedication to the highest standards of intellectual, emotional, and spiritual integrity.

Involvement in Phi Kappa Psi continues beyond the mere four years spent in college. It is a life-long allegiance that will bring rewards and experiences that no other organization can offer. For young men Phi Kappa Psi helps to shape the random experiences of the college years into a more stable form in which life begins to reveal larger, clearer purposes, and friendships become firm and lasting. In the middle years the Fraternity helps to sustain mature men in the settled courses of life, strengthening their resolve and renewing their spirits through the ripening of friendship. In later life the Fraternity helps to impart the harmony and wholeness that can lead the principled man, upheld by the loyalty of his friends, to understanding and contentment.

The strong bond of friendship and ethical development is not all the association has to offer. Phi Kappa Psi boasts a long list of prominent leaders, ranging from congressmen to university presidents to business-world billionaires. Sixty percent of the alumni who donate to Stanford were once Greek. Is it because they are more successful and can afford such gifts, or is it because their Stanford experiences were that much better?

Friendship, camaraderie, leadership development and ethical education. It sounds like ornamentation and bravado. Such lofty idealism may bring a sneer to the outsider and cynic, for how can a mere band of miscellaneous men provide so many benefits? The phenomenon is difficult to articulate to anyone who has not already experienced Phi Kappa Psi, so we invite you to find out for yourselves.

What happens after rush?
by Benjamin Trevino

There are few experiences that can compare to the excitement that comes with being a pledge for Phi Kappa Psi. Every day can introduce you to completely different facet of what it means to be a member of this fraternity. If you're not being taken aback by the courtesy and respect with which you are treated by the active brothers, perhaps you're enjoying the pleasure of having your meals paid for while engaging in fabulous conversation with some of the most accomplished and interesting guys you've ever met. It's possible you could find yourself learning about the rich and impressive history of the California Beta Chapter and Phi Psi national. Or maybe you're strategizing with your fellow pledges on how to exploit the weaknesses of the actives (or on how to evade their roving gangs) during PA wars (where the pledges teach actives the value of working together as much as the actives teach pledges).

The hardest part about pledge period is managing to somehow take advantage of every free meal, every learning experience, and every bonding activity to which you're entitled as a pledge of Phi Kappa Psi. You meet people you might never have met otherwise. You'll accomplish things you might never have been able to accomplish otherwise. And when you emerge you'll have developed an unmistakable brotherhood with some extraordinary men.

Why Should I Join Phi Psi?

Lifelong friendships
The gentlemen you meet in the fraternity will quickly number among your closest friends, and they will remain your lifelong friends. The fraternity makes it easy to stay in contact with old friends,and it gives you the chance to help and advise under-graduate brothers.

Strong national brotherhood
Phi Kappa Psi is strong across the nation at 90 campuses besides Stanford. A Stanford Phi Psi can go to any of these campuses and be immediately welcomed as a brother.

Community Service
We endeavor to help the community whenever we can by participating in charity events and community service projects. This includes regular activities involving the Urban Ministry of Palo Alto, weekly stints at a food kitchen, projects with local schools, ecological maintenance, and more.

Leadership
Within the fraternity, we have numerous oportunities to assume leadership positions and direct the course of Phi Psi. This includes several elected positions, as well as the traditional house positions of RA, RCC, and row managers.

Academics
Phi Psi will not make you abandon your coursework--rather, we understand that classes are the primary reason one is at Stanford and we make allowances for them. Furthmore, Phi Psi offers many scholarships to its members, both on the national and local level. Finally, you may find that the best study groups are formed with fellow Phi Psi brothers.

Strong Ties to Alumni
Phi Psi isn't just composed of active undergraduates. Since 1891, the Stanford chapter of Phi Kappa Psi has initiated 1363 men. Many of our alumni are still actively involved. They attend meetings, events, and provide advice.

Over the course of a year, we hold several large alumni events: Homecoming Dinner, Big Game Lunch, Founders Day Dinner, and Spring Formal. The most fun of these is Big Game Lunch. A bunch of Stanford and Cal Phi Psis gather at Herrington's, a San Francisco bar, for lunch and to predict the score of Big Game. We also hold Homecoming Dinner, Founders Day Dinner, and Spring Formal where we get to hear alumni reminisce about their Phi Psi experiences.
