Los Angeles County's intervention plan includes four components:

  • Street and prenatal clinic outreach to pregnant women, a social marketing campaign, provider education, and chart reviews.

The street and prenatal clinic outreach will be conducted by county health department staff and community outreach workers known as Promotoras. The street outreach will be concentrated in East and South Central L.A., areas identified as having low socio-economic and health indicators. The clinic outreach will take place in a variety of venues, including public and private hospitals, clinics and doctors' offices.

The social marketing campaign will consist primarily of placing posters specific to HIV/AIDS issues during pregnancy in county clinics and other venues where pregnant women might see them.

Provider Education:

Chart reviews will likely be performed at several hospitals, clinics, and/or physician's offices in order to try to document a change in the testing rate in the county.
