At Stanford, Pilipinos comprise one of
the smallest Asian American groups, even though they are the
largest Asian American ethnic group in California and the second largest in
the United States. The Stanford Pilipino American Student Union (PASU)
was founded in 1990 and has since been a social/cultural/political
organization for Pilipinos (and friends!) on campus.
Recognized as a Volunteer Student
Organization (VSO), PASU's primary goal is to give back to the
community. Pro-active projects that PASU has undertaken have
included raising money for a Pilipino American scholarship fund,
coordinating visits of Pilipino high school students to Stanford,
and organizing Pilipino Youth Leadership Conferences (PYLC). Last
year, PASU reestablished its high school youth mentorship program
with Fremont High School in Sunnyvale.
In addition to youth outreach, PASU is
committed to social justice issues facing the Pilipino community. It
is currently involved in the national effort to gain full equity for
Filipino WWII Veterans, and hopes to work on combating sex
trafficking with the Gabriela Network this year. PASU continually
hopes to both educate and involve the community in issues such as
these. The student organization
emphasizes the importance of community. While we do focus on
community service and political issues throughout the year, we are
also a social group. Indeed, the PASU pamilya, or PASU posse, as it is often
called, enjoys having fun! Everyone is welcome to join our
community!
