Elastomer: A natural or synthetic rubber
or rubberoid material, which has the ability to undergo deformation
under the influence of a force and regain its original shape once
the force has been removed.
Electrophoresis is the process in which
molecules (such as proteins, DNA, or RNA fragments) can be separated
according to size and electrical charge by applying an electric
current to them. The current forces the molecules through pores
in a thin layer of gel, a firm jelly-like substance. The gel can
be made so that its pores are just the right dimensions for separating
molecules within a specific range of sizes and shapes. Smaller
fragments usually travel further than large ones. The process
is sometimes called gel electrophoresis.
Electrostatic potential A measurement of areas which
are electronegative and areas which are electropositive around a molecule
Energy A measure of a system's ability to
do work. Energy is an abstract quantity of extreme usefulness in physics
because it is defined in such a way that the total energy of any closed
physical system is always constant (conservation of energy). It is impossible
to overstate the importance of this concept in all branches of physics
from elementary mechanics to general relativity. Energy is measured
in units of mass times velocity squared, and the MKS and cgs units of
energy are the Joule and erg, respectively. Other common units of energy
include the Btu, calorie, and kilowatt hour.
Energy density is the amount of energy stored
in a given system or region of space per unit volume, and is most commonly
denoted u. It therefore has units of energy per length cubed.
Enzyme is a protein that encourages a biochemical reaction,
usually speeding it up. Organisms could not function if they had no
enzymes.
Error-control: data in a packet that contains
a mechanism for checking the validity and integrity of data. For example,
let's say you send a five-word message. The error-control data would
say that your message had five words total. If the data doesn't have
five words, then the computer will know that the message is not valid.
Expressed Protein Tags EPTs: Multi- cellular
organisms have been evolving a system with which they can discriminate
between cells of their own origin and other adventitious cells or cells
which have been infected with intracellular pathogens. To achieve this
goal, a family of receptors, known as multi- ligand receptors (MLR),
have evolved to be remarkably promiscuous binders of peptide ligands.
The MLR- bound ligands are derived from degradation intermediates of
cellular proteins. Typically, these ligands are 8-12 amino acids in
length. EPTs are of sufficient length to differentiate particular proteins
and/ or individual genes. Each MLR has a single binding site and thus
contains a single EPT copy.
