3.    Liason Officer (Ali) contact Sanskriti (Shalini) / Indian students etc to make them aware of PAS liason officer and suggest organising events togeather

4.    Rana Uzair contact OSA and make sure he has the appropriate authority

5.    E.P. , JAL and Call are all willing to come Feb-March-April for free provided we fly them over, provide accommodation and pay for all expenses.
  • Need to contact San Jose State for advice as they have organsied Strings / Junoon concert in the past.

11th Oct 2004

Attendance: Maham, Rehan, Rana Uzair, Usman, Uzair Khan, Kamil, Sanah, Ali
  1. BigSib LittleSib Program
  2. Liason Officer
  3. Mega Event (musical)
  4. I-Gala/Mela
  5. Efficient Meetings
  6. Eid Event
  7. PAS movie/ drama/ sitcom/ music video night
  8. szparvez@stanford.edu

    1.    Usman will handle the BigSib program. No firm decisions were made on this. Possibly have a night where all Big and Little Sibs get togeather to meet everyone else.

    2.    PAS will create a new officer position of Liason Officer. This person will be responsible to interact on behalf of PAS with other groups on campus especially those that have some shared interest with PAS and may be interested in co-sponsoring an event with PAS (e.g. Sanskriti, MSAN) . Ali was suggested as a candidate for this position.

    3.    PAS will try to organise a big event in either winter or spring quarter. Current feeling is that it should be a musical event (or maybe something else like classical dance). The event could be sponsored by off campus groups and/or co-sponsored by other groups on campus (e.g. Sanskriti). The following tasks were assigned to people:
  • Uzair Khan and Usman volunteered to look up Pakistani bands to see if any were coming to the US (so that we wouldn't have to fly them over).
  • Usman would also try to contact bands he had connections with.
  • Uzair (?) needed to contact OSA and/or ASSU to find out about how we could get funding.
  • Rehan and kamil would go to a  meeting at Bechtel about organising events.
    4.    PAS will try to do something for Mela and I-Gala (and I-Festival?). Details of this will be discussed it the future

    5.    Maham will request Shah Nawaz to give a short talk at the next PAS meeting on running more efficient and productive meetings.

    6.    PAS will try to do something for Eid. However, it is important that PAS events don't clash with ISSU. People may also prefer to spend time with the wider Muslim community instad of just the Pakistani community. PAS could possibly help ISSU with whatever they are doing (e.g. bring Paksitani food/sweets).

    7.    It was suggested that we have a Paksitani dinner and movie night. After some discussion people felt that instead of a movie might we could also watch Pakistani sitcoms, dramas or music videos. These would have to be brought from Pakistan and this could either be done by having someone bring them back over winter break or by getting somone in Pakistan to mail the relevant items to PAS. Some names of movies/sitcoms that were monetioned were:
  • Family Front
  • theen baray theen (I think - I can't really read my writing here)
  • Jinnah
  • Pakistani Music Videos
  • Other sitcoms
  • Loose Talk
  • A few movies Shahnawaz suggested
Could Shahnawaz please email the names of the movies he suggested (reply to this email or to pas-officers@lists.stanford.edu). Similarly could anyone with suggestions for movies/sitcoms etc pease also email names.

    8.    Could Usman please add szparvez@stanford.edu to the PAS list?

Attendance: Maham, Kamil, Uzair, Shahnawaz, Usman, Fawad, Aamir, Ali, Muzammal

1.    The PAS welcome BBQ will be held at 11:00 AM on Sunday the 10th of October at the Oval and will be followed by a trip to San Francisco. Uzair is in charge of organising the BBQ and transport for SFO. If Usman can organise a trip to Alcatraz then that will be the centrepiece of the SFO trip otherwise it will be some sight seeing (Fisherman's Wharf, Golden Gate Bridge, Haight road, Lombard Street etc). The following people have cars: Fawad, Rehan, Yasir, Sikandar, Salman, Asim and Ibrahim (Mojel).

2.    Usman will be in charge of the Big Sib-Little Sib program and will try to come up with some guidelines for the program.

3.    It was decided that next meeting (after the BBQ) will be used to go over the PAS events planned for the year. Rehan has a list of these events.

4.    It was decided that PAS would like to try to organise one large event this year which would ideally be a fundraiser. This could be a musical concert and Usman, Aamir and Maham have contacts in Pakistani bands.

5.    It was decided that a seperate PAS announce list is not neccessary as the PAS list does not have too much spam.

6.    It was decided that PAS may want to create a position for a Liason Officer who would be responsible for PAS's relationship with other groups on campus like Sanskriti.

7.    Uzair will facilitate the next meeting.

Action list:

BBQ:
  •             Uzair will order food from Rose Market.
  •             Uzair will organise two grills (borrow from Haitam and Rehan)
  •             Ali and Fawad will go shopping on Friday night at 7:00 PM for drinks and other items. Maham will email them an exact list of what to get
  •             Plates, utensils, coal etc will also need to be organised (they will probably need to be bought on the shopping trip)
  •             Uzair will spam the PAS list to publicise the BBQ. Ali will also try to help publicise the event.
SFO
  •             Usman will try to organise the Alcatraz trip. I think the number you need to call to book tickets for groups over 14 people is: 415 705 8214. We wil probably want to do the 4:20 PM night tour (Since Alcatraz gets booked very quickly I suggest Usman calls them tomorow and maybe tries to get RSVPs form people).
  • Uzair will try to organise transport to SFO. The following people have cars: Fawad, Rehan, Yasir, Sikandar, Salman, Asim and Ibrahim (Mojel).
  • A backup trip will need to be planned if Usman does not manage to organise the Alcatraz trip. Following are potential places we could visit: Golden Gate Bridge, Marina, Palace of Fine Arts, Cliff House, Nob Hill, Chinatown, Financial District, Presidio , Golden Gate Park, Civic Center, North Beach.

29th Sept 2004

Attendance:

Maham, Rehan, Kamil, Shah Nawaz, Uzair, Ali, Omair, Aamir, Usman, Muzammal. (Apologies for any incorrect spellings - feel free to correct me)

1.    Discussed goals for PAS. Goals mentioned were:
            a.    PAS should be a forum for the Pakistani community on campus (and possibly off campus) to get together.
            b.    PAS should allow us to share Pakistani culture with the rest of the people on campus.
            c.    PAS should facilitate the discussion of issues (political or otherwise) concerning Pakistani's by bringing speakers etc. to campus.
            d.    PAS should try to use alumni to provide advice to current students (through their degrees and/or in getting a jog).

2.    PAS might be able to run better/more effective events if it collaborates with other groups on campus (MSAN, ISSU, Sanskriti etc.) for events where there is some overlap.

3.    Discussed some problems with PAS last year:
            a.    Publicity was the biggest problem as often people didn't know about events. Maybe have a new post of publicity officer.
            b.    Bad attendance at some events.
            c.    PAS doesn't do any revenue generation.
            d.    PAS events did not have much variety.

4.    Objectives for this year are essentially to try to eliminate the above. Biggest problem seemed to be publicity (get more participation, reach out to a greater percentage of Pakistanis on campus) and variety of events.

5.    Discussed Fall events. Discussed why the Junoon concert had to be cancelled (Didn't have enough money or people in Stanford during the summer). Fall Events:
            a.    Welcome BBQ - food, publicity, grills and utensils were some of the items that need to be attended to. 11 a.m. on a weekend seems to be the preferred time.
            b.    SFO trip - transport, planning (i.e. what we will do in SFO), dates and times all need to be sorted out

6.    Discussed the idea of having a list of the birthdays of all the members of PAS. Decided Usman (webmaster) would arrange for ecards to be sent to the list on the birthdays of people. Decided it was not viable for the PAS to do something on everyone's birthday (too expensive and too many members).

7.    Discussed the idea of having a separate announce list that only announces PAS events (the problem being that some people don't read all their PAS emails). The advantage of this would be that people who don't want to read all the PAS emails all the time but would like to know about PAS events could do so with relative ease. It was pointed out that people who don't read PAS email may not want to know about PAS events but we agreed to try out the idea of a PAS announce list.

8.    Discussed the possibility of delegating one or two people to be in charge of an event. They could be officers but need not be and would probably be people who may have initiated the idea or feel that they could do a reasonable job of organising the event. While officers and other PAS members would obviously support and help them, these people would be responsible for the event.

9.    Also discussed the need for a meeting facilitator to help make meetings more efficient. The facilitator should manage the discussion and try to make sure we stick to the agenda and use our time effectively. PAS members are requested to email items they want discussed before the meeting so that they can be included in the agenda.

10. Finally, meetings will be kept to 1 hour maximum, people must try to be there on time and the next one will be on Monday at 9 p.m. at Tressider.

28th May 2004

We agreed on the following Goals for PAS (in the order of priority):

1. Forum for community to get together

SubGoal/PreReq: Requires learning about community demographics 2. Share Pakistani culture with others 3. Political Engagement

Follwoing additional goals were identified as being a part of fulfilling above goals

Academic advising for students

Professional advising for students

Evaluation of Current year's performance:

Plus points:

1. Had more events

2. Relatively larger attendance

3. More officers attending (?)

4. joint programming with MSAN/ISSU

5. Campus represebtation via IAW?IGALA/IFest

6. Good Food :)

We made progress in Goals 1 and 2 above.

Minus points:

1. Lack of adequate publicity

2. Memeber attendance still quite low

3. No revenue generating events

4. Less variety of events

Need more work on Goal 3 and SubGoal for 1

Objectives for next year

1. Retain plus points of current year

2. Work to get more participation

3. Improve variety of events

4. Improve means of publicity

5. Focus on quality of events instead of quantity

6. Better organization

Suggestions - Publicity:

We would use the following means for publicity:

1. People to People communication (referred to as P2P from now on :)) for bringing more people to events 2. Emails 3. Flyres for events involving non-Pakistani audiance

Suggestions - Events:

Welcome

Farewell

Concert - Junoon, Noori, .....

Independence Day Ceremony (? - falls in summer)

23rd March

Speakers Series (Zia Chishti, Qadir Khan, Parvez Hoodboy, ...) Standup Comedian (with MSAN ?) SFO trip Yosemite trip Tahoe Zoo Shalimar/Mughal + Bowling Movie night great america Urdu Darama Series (Dhoop Kinaray?) Arrange cricket match viewing (joint with sanskriti ?) IGALA - talk to SJSU

Shortlisted Events for next year:

Fall:

Welcome

Junoon Concert

SFO trip

Winter:

Speakers Series

Urdu Drama Series

IGala

Spring:

Farewell

Cricket - as and when required

Things to do:

talk to SJSU, off campus pakistanis of bay area about junoon concert collect ideas from other people for events think of more (on-campus?) organizations with which we can do joint events talk to SJSU about IGala Sara and Usman to resolve the website rights issue

New students/Orientation:

Try to get a list of all new incoming students

communicate with them officialy on behalf of PAS

try to set up big sib / lil sib type relations

Other ideas:

. Event location and times should be posted on PAS website - whoever posts the event email needs to communicate with the webmaster

. Exploit the large attendance at Welcome event to get some feedback from community - but keep it minimal and non-formal

. Keep the 'current members' database more up-to-date
