BEENA SARWAR is a journalist and documentary filmmaker from Pakistan, where she has lived primarily in Karachi and Lahore . She has a double major in Studio Art and English Literature from Brown University, USA (1986) and a Masters degree in Television Documentary from Goldsmiths College , University of London (2001). She has extensive experience with the print and electronic media in Pakistan and runs a postings group for members with public archives at <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/beena-issues/ >. Her work focuses primarily on human rights, media, gender and peace issues. She is currently working on a book on the struggle for democratic spaces and progressive politics in Pakistan, based at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at Harvard University as a Research Fellow.
HUMA DAR is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of South & South East Asian Studies at the University of California at Berkeley. She was the organizer of the feminist conference, Boundaries in Question: 2002, on the theme of Women and War, at U.C. Berkeley. Dar is a published poet and has taught various courses at Berkeley, including India Through the Writer's Eyes, "India and Cinematic (Imagi)Nation: the Courtesan and the Mother," "Modern Urdu Prose: Partition Narratives," and Women and Media at SFSU. She has been awarded the Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor Award and the Teaching Effectiveness Award at Berkeley. Her work is focused on the intersections and co-formations of gender, religion, class, caste, sexuality, and national and transnational politics of South Asia, specifically analyzing the cinematic, literary, and political representations of Muslims in India.
Dar has been a member of the Executive Board of Directors of Narika – a South Asian women's organization that runs a helpline for victims of domestic violence in the Bay Area. She has also been a children and parents' rights activist at U.C. Berkeley, and is the co-author of the University of California's pioneering Family Policy
