Who We Are
The Stanford Outing Club is an informal organization of people that enjoys the outdoors and outdoor activities. Our most common activity is hiking (day trips) at one of the Bay Area's many parks, such as Pt. Reyes, Big Basin, Mt. Tamalpais, or Pinnacles, to name a few. We also often organize backpacking trips, cross-country ski trips, kayak trips, and more. Group size is usually 10-20, sometimes more (the current record is 48!).

The club has no paid leader or advisors and does not require club membership dues. You are automatically a club "member" if you are subscribed to the mailing list. All our activities are cooperatively planned and run by club members, and trip costs are split amongst participants. We receive no financial support from the university. Our activities are open for everyone (i.e. also for people not affiliated with Stanford University). Most of the active participants are graduate students, international visitors, or young professionals working in Silicon Valley.

At the beginning of each academic quarter, the club holds a meeting at the Bechtel International Center at Stanford to plan its activities. Some planning also takes place on the trips themselves and by e-mail discussions. The number and kind of activities that we do depends entirely on who shows up and volunteers to organize them. Trip information is distributed by e-mail (outing@list.stanford.edu).
