Sat Jan 20: Castle Rock State Park

Elevation gain: 2500 feet (moderately strenuous)
Length of hike: ~12 miles
start of hike: 9:00 am at the Bechtel Center, Stanford

We will start this hike in Castle Rock State Park from Saratoga Gap Parking Lot right at the crossing of highway 9 and 35. We will walk down the Skyline to the Sea Trail to an elevation of about 650 feet where we can cross over to the Saratoga Toll Road Trail. We continue until we come to a crossing, take then the Travertine Springs Trail to Castle Rock Trail Camp and Park HQs. On the Ridge Trail we pass by the beautiful Goat Rock (sandstone with marvelous forms caused by rainwater's chemical erosion). We continue to castle rock. From there back to Saratoga Gap parking lot on Skyline Trail. Castle Rock has been a local tourist attraction by the turn of the century. This semi wilderness in which visitors can have siestas in rolling meadows, hike through shady forests, and enjoy spectacular vistas waits to be rediscovered by the outing club.

Sat. Feb 03: Pinnacles Full Moon Hike

Length of hike: ~10 miles
Elevation gain: 1500 feet (moderately strenuous)
Start of hike: 12:30 pm at the Bechtel Center, Stanford

By popular demand, we'll do yet another full moon hike! Come to Pinnacles National Monument, the remains of an ancient volcano 2 hours drive south of Stanford. Our 10 mile hike will take us up, around, and over the pinnacles as well as through some caves. Part of the hike will be after sunset, but if the sky is clear there should be plenty of moonlight. Everybody must bring a flashlight (and batteries) for the caves! Trails may be wet and slippery through the caves so use sturdy shoes/boots. Bring food (supper?), water/drinks, and warm clothes (it can get cold after dark). Also bring money for parking and optional meal in Hollister on the way home. We will return to Stanford late, possibly around midnight.

PS: We will do a slightly different route this time. We'll start at the visitor's center and try to go through both set of caves, skipping the difficult sction of the High Peaks Trail.

Sat. Feb 17: Andrew Molero State Park

Length of hike: ~11 miles
Elevation gain: mostly flat, but with a strenous segment where we will gain 1200 feet in 2 miles.
Start of hike: 8:00 am at the Bechtel Center, Stanford

Andrew Molera State Park is located in the Big Sur coastline about 2 hours driving from Stanford. The park ascends from a 2.5 mile ocean-front beach to the Big Sur river through grasslands and redwood forest. We will start at the parking lot and hike inland along the river to the south boundary of the park. This trail is primarily in the Big Sur coastline is spectacular. This is the time of the year when the California gray whales are migrating, so if we are lucky we will be able to watch them (bring you binoculars!). From the highest elevation of the park, we will go down to the beach, where we will have our traditional siesta time. We will then walk, along the beach or on the Ridge Trail, back to the north end of the park. We will cross the Big Sur river and then return to the parking lot.

Sat. Mar 02: Three Lakes hike (Marin County)

Distance: < 13 miles
Elevation gain: 1300 feet (not steep = some would say mostly flat :)
Departure: 8:00 a.m. at the Bechtel Center, Stanford (if you live significantly north of Stanford please contact the trip "leader" for an alternate 10 a.m. meeting place in Marin)
Driving time: 1.5 - 2 hours each way

By popular demand we try a brand new hike passing through the meadows, marshes, forests and on the ridges as well as along three lake shores in the beautiful area of the northern slopes of Mount Tamalpais. The hike starts at the Bon Tempe dam and then follows the Alpine Lake shore for 4 miles. Then we go up along Cataract and there should be plenty places suitable for siestas and offering great views of the valleys. After the high marshes the hike goes on down Rock Spring - Lagunitas trail and then along the shore of Lake Lagunitas and on Bon Tempe Sunnyside trial (along the shore of Bon Tempe Lake).

Some siesta gear (frisbee, chocolate, etc :) may be useful... The optional San Francisco dinner will feature a brand new restaurant!

Sat. Mar 16: Mt. Madonna

Length of hike: 8-10 miles
Start of hike: 8am at the Bechtel Center, Stanford

Mt. Madonna is a 3200 acre redwood park near Gilroy which we have never visited before. The hike will be 8-10 miles long with lots of hills (elevation 600-1800 ft). Everybody must participate in map and sign reading so we don't get lost. Optional dinner afterwards.
