    * No RSVP. Rain cancels.

    I have never visited this park before. I hope someone familiar with the park will attend the hike; we will let him/her lead the hike, choose any path covering 7-8 miles, but choose the pace ourselves and keep it moderate.

    Check : http://www.bahiker.com/southbayhikes/almadenquicksilver.html
    A reference point for finding driving directions is : "Almaden Rd & Mockingbird Hill Ln, San Jose, CA 95120". More exact directions can be found in the URL above.

    My plan is to follow the route described in the URL. The walk will start at 10:45 AM; we should be back at the trailhead by 2:30 PM.

    I am cross-posting the hike on BayAreaHiking yahoo group. In case rain cancels the hike, you can read about it on the yahoo-group by 7 AM on the day of the hike.

    We will park our cars near the intersection of Alpine Rd and Willowbrook Dr in Portola Valley. But parking space is very limited, so please carpool from the campus. We will reach the pond at the farthest end of the hike either via Old Spanish Trail or via Alpine Rd on foot for 2 miles and Lake Trail. The return would be along Toyon Trail. We should be done by 12:15 PM and back on the campus by 12:30 PM. We also have the option of extending the hike by a mile or two by walking a few extra trails in Coal Mine Ridge or in Windy Hill OSP.

Bike trip to Windy Hill summit in Windy Hill Open Space Preserve (Greg and Jean-Gabriel)

This is a serious climb but beginners are welcome!  This trip is a great workout, offers beautiful views, and a super fun trip for the way down. Only people in reasonably good condition will be able to complete this climb, but we'll go as slow as needed.  Also the downhill is rather steep at times - again we'll go as slow as needed.

* Destination: Beautiful Bald Peak of Windy Hill
* Date: January 16 (Martin Luther King Day)
* Meeting Time: 1:00 in front of Bechtel Center or 1:45 at Windy Hill Open Space Preserve Parking Area on Portola Road. NOTE: If you plan on meeting at the parking area you MUST email me before 12:00 on Monday so I know to look for you.
* Duration: we should be back at Stanford well before Sunset (5:00ish)
* Total Length: approx. 20 miles
* Total elevation gain: approx. 2000 feet
* Pace: intermediate
* Cost: Absolutely FREE!
* Equipment: bike in reasonable condition - must have a low gear for climbing, best to have some kind of shocks for downhill, and brakes that work :) - helmet, water, wind-cutting cloths, camera
* Sign-up: RSVP welcome but not required
* Weather Policy: cancelled if rain on Sunday or Monday (rain makes trails too slippery for at least a day)

* Note: No cars, bike racks, etc. needed.  Unless someone wants to drive to the trail head to meet us there.  If so simply take Alpine Road west until the first stop sign after 280 (about 5 miles).  Turn right at the stop sign which is Portola Road.  The Windy Hill Open Space Preserve parking area will be on the left after about a mile.

* Trip description: we'll be biking from campus to the Windy Hill Open Space Preserve parking area via Alpine road and Portola Road.  These roads have some trails that go along the side of the road that make things more interesting and keep you far from traffic.  The road travel is slightly uphill on the way there.  A little less than 8 miles.  Then we will climb the hill.  It is over 1000 feet of climbing in less than 3 miles.  That means it is steep!  It is a wonderful workout and wayyyyy fun on the trip back down.  From the top the view is 360 degrees.  You can see the ocean as well as San Fransisco.  It is beautiful!

Winter Camping to Cinder Cone, Lassen Volcanic Park, + Optional Hot Springs (Igor)

It is time to take some time off and ski up the Cinder Cone Volcano at the Lassen Volcanic Park.

If you are interested in my upcoming ski trips to the Hot Springs in Lassen or to try to circumnavigate around Crater Lake, Oregon later this winter please come to this trip to hone your skills.

We'll be leaving the Bay Area in the afternoon on Friday, February 3rd. making a dinner stop in Chico's college town.

On Saturday, after a night of acclimatization, we'll ski in 6.5ml to Cinder Cone and set up a camp near its base.  On Sunday we'll ski out and head back to the Bay Area with an alternative stops at some local hot springs and/or the wine country (for those who want to take the time.)

Back-Country skis and well fitting BC boots are a MUST for this trip, as well as all the other usual winter personal & camping equipment - we can discuss all the details next week during an organizational meeting (to be announced.)  I also plan to organize dinners as group events.

This trip as a serious intro to winter camping but we'll go at a reasonable pace so I'll consider taking people with extensive summer camping experience and who are in good shape.

Please send me an e-mail if you are interested and I'll send you the full gear/food list.  Please also share with me your past camping & winter camping experience.   Finally, we need people who are willing to help & drive.

Cheers!

    Golden Falls.  Big Basin park is an astoundingly beautiful park with

Hidden Villa Farm in Los Altos Hills (DN)

  • Destination : Hidden Villa Farm, Los Altos Hills
    * Date : Feb 05, 2006 (Sunday)
    * Length of hike : 5-6 miles
    * Elevation gain : approx 1,000 feet
    * Difficulty : Moderate.
    * Rain Policy : Rain, or threat of rain, may cancel the hike.
    * Meet : The Bechtel I-Center (Stanford Campus), 11:55 AM.  Don't be
    late. I am aiming to leave by 12 noon or 12:05 PM.
    * Bring : lunch, water, parking fee and carpool money, layers, rain gear
    * Organizer : DN (email : walks.nani [at] gmail-dot-com)
    * No RSVP. (Not recommended for beginners; email me if you have questions.)

    Please remember to have a late and substantial breakfast as we are
    starting late and will stop for lunch around 2:30 PM during the hike.

    A friend of mine remarked that quite a few parks were somehow not very
    popular with the Stanford Outing Club. Even well-known hiking spots in
    the vicinity, like Hidden Villa or Sanborn, have not been much visited
    by the club over recent years as a google search would confirm. Let us
    set right one omission by visiting Hidden Villa in Los Altos Hills,
    which is right next to Rancho San Antonio OSP. I have never visited
    the place, a private non-profit farm and preserve, and don't have
    access to the map. With the hike described in the URL below as our
    reference point, we will improvise and chalk out 5-6 miles.

    I think the club hasn't visited this spot since April 2002. An old
    hike description on the club's website promises views of rabbits,
    deer, banana slugs; also a trail along a clear creek and 'Josephine's
    Retreat' where cabins are let for overnight stay. Founded by Josephine
    and Frank Duveneck in 1937, the farm also hosts the oldest operating
    hostel in the United States. It looks like a spot we could come to
    like and want to visit often, and should offer some seclusion compared
    to the adjacent and crazily crowded Rancho. (Well, but one could say
    that any damn place in the world is secluded compared to Rancho.)

XC-Skiing / Snow Camping at Lassen National Park  (David A.)

  • Dates: Sat Feb 18- Mon Feb 20 (late night)
    * Driving distance: ~350miles (5 hours) each way
    * Departure time: 6:00am
    * Cancellation Police: weather can alter or cancel trip entirely
    * Cost: Mileage reimbursement to drivers, Camping fees, park entrance fee.

    Lassen Volcanic National Park located in Northern California at the
    southern terminus of the Cascade Mountains. The area features
    interesting geological sites and very scenic landscapes. The western
    side of the park receives a high accumulation of snow, making for some
    great skiing and snow shoeing.

    We will camp and ski in this park on the long weekend, and visit some
    hot springs before returning to the bay area.

    * The plan:

    We meet Saturday morning and depart at 6:00am. Drive from the bay area
    to Lassen Volcanic National park, keeping in contact by using cell
    phones and two-way radios. We snow camp at the walk in camp sites near
    the south west entrance of the park (camping a few hundred feet from
    the cars). Ski / snow shoe in the area, then have dinner at camp and
    build a camp fire.

    Sunday we ski the parkway towards Helen Lake and the 10457ft (3187m)
    Lassen Peak, an active stratovolcano which last erupted in the years
    1914-1917. It is very unlikely that we will see an eruption this
    Presidents day weekend, but we will see other active geology (steaming
    fumaroles and bubbling mud pots) as we pass by the geological area
    called Sulfur Works. We won't attempt skiing Lassen peak this time.

    Sunday evening we pack up and drive to a new campsite to warm up
    before the trip back. The new campsite will be at the junction of a
    creek and roaring river near some hot springs and pools (any one who
    has joined Igor, the clubs mycology and hot springs expert, on one of
    his challenging winter trips should know the place). Monday we head
    back to the bay area (don't expect to be back until late).

    Costs:

    camping fees ($25/number of people at camp site)
    + national park entrance fee $10/car
    + hot springs entrance fee $10/person
    + plus cost of any rentals needed
    (see http://www.stanford.edu/group/redwood/gear_rental_sheet.html )
    + food (restaurants/snacks while on the drive there and back etc.,
    food you take along for at camp and while skiing.)

    Round trip distance: ~700miles, we will use the reimbursement rate of
    $150 per vehicle. For example, for a car with one driver plus two
    passengers, each passenger would pay the driver $ 50($150/3) and the
    driver would pay for gas.

Sykes Hot Springs (Big Sur) Backpacking Trip (Johnny + Meike)

*** Sign-up required (limited space - please reply by Feb. 22nd 5PM).

* Location: Big Sur
* Length of hike: ~11 miles each way
* Difficulty: Moderate (except creek crossings)
* Meet: 7 AM Saturday 2/25
* Return: Sunday night
* Rain Policy: heavy rain cancels trip
* Cost: carpool expenses and miscellaneous

Have you ever soaked in a hot-spring next to a cool roaring river
surrounded by redwoods and green ferns and mossy rocks and good
friends after a long day's hike?  Well, here is your chance to
(re)experience it.  The Outing Club is going to Sykes!

The Sykes Hot Springs is located in Los Padres National Forest, near
Big Sur. We will start hiking from the ocean into the woodland and
beautiful forest of Los Padres.  The hike is about 11 miles each way,
and involves quite some ups and downs, and possibly thigh-deep creek
crossings.  So it is not recommended for beginners.  But it is well
worth the work.  Sykes is a cluster of natural hot spring pools with a
temperature of about 100F - just what we need after a long hike with a
heavy backpack. We will spend the night in a primitive campground
close to the hot springs, and head back the next morning.

For some pictures from a previous trip, see:
http://cjserver.stanford.edu/cjpics/Big_Sur_Jan02/page_01.htm

Sign-ups:  To sign-up for the trip, please send answers to the
questions below by Wednesday Feb. 22nd at 5PM.  We'll gather all the
responses and get back to everyone by Wedneday night.  Priority will
be given to people promising foot massages, recent trip leaders, and
people who haven't been able to join other overnight trips because of
over-subscription.

Sweeney Ridge, San Bruno (Eastern) Side (DN)

  • Destination : Sweeney Ridge, San Bruno Side.
    * Date : March 04 (Saturday)
    * Length of hike : 7 miles (5 mile option for beginners possible)
    * Elevation gain : ~ 1,000 feet
    * Rain Policy : Heavy rain cancels. Light rain will not cancel.
    * Meet :
           - Self-organised carpool near P&TS : 340, Bonair Siding Rd (Stanford
    Campus), 8:55 AM. (Bechtel I-Center is not an option for campus
    carpool.)
           - Or 9:40 AM at Sneath Lane trailhead.
    * Bring : water, rain gear, perhaps something to eat but no long lunch break.
    * Organizer : DN (email : walks.nani (at) gmail-dot-com)
    * No RSVP.

    I thought of making this a Big Sweeny Ridge Loop Hike, or a Complete
    Loop hike, if you will, because even the longest loop at the ridge is
    only 8-10 miles, which is not all that long, but finally I settled for
    a shorter version which covers just the Eastern Section of the ridge,
    and added a 2 mile out-and-back section to the route to accumulate
    some decent mileage.

    This is not a very strenuous hike. The climb is gradual. It offers an
    excellent chance for relative beginners who want to stretch themselves
    just that bit more. The hike will feature an out-and-back section of 2
    miles which gives experienced hikers a chance for more exercise and
    beginners a breather. But the hike begins with a continuous 30-minute
    (gentle and gradual) climb; be prepared for that effort.

    We will park our cars at the trailhead in San Bruno where Sneath Lane
    ends. There is no parking charge. I plan to set up car shuttle to
    Skyline College. Then we start the climb on the paved Sneath Lane,
    along San Andreas Lake. We may stop for 5-10 minutes near Portola
    Discovery site where Sneath Lane ends; bring something to eat at this
    point if you want, but this hike is early enough and too short for a
    regular lunch break. We will turn left (Southwards) on Sweeney Ridge
    Trail and walk till it meets the San Francisco Watershed and 'no
    access' territory. This segment of the hike offers great views of
    Montara Mountain. Those looking for less strenuous walk may skip this
    part of the hike. Then we will turn back and walk the entire length of
    the trail, part of which was probably named Skyline College Trail
    earlier, down to Skyline College's lot # 4 (not # 2) to the cars.
    There are great views to be enjoyed, of hills, ocean, bay and lake. A
    stretch of the hike presents views of the ocean and the bay, and the
    lake is the third body of water.

    Note 1 : Do not go to Skyline College's parking lot; come to the
    trailhead on Sneath Lane.
    Note 2 : If rain cancels the hike, I will (try to) make a post to that
    effect on BayAreaHiking yahoo-group by 8 AM that day. If you don't see
    any such post, the hike is 99% on.
    Note 3 : The forecast predicts rain for next 5-6 days. Expect some
    muddy trails. Bring a plastic bag to protect your driver's car-carpet
    from muddy shoes.

    - Map in pdf : http://www.nps.gov/goga/maps/pdf/sweeney.pdf
    - More details about the trail :
    http://www.bahiker.com/southbayhikes/sweeney.html
    "Sweeney Ridge is a quick drive from San Francisco, and the payback
    for climbing to the ridge is a good one: incomparable views of Montara
    Mountain, the Pacific Ocean, and the San Francisco Watershed,
    including San Andreas Lake."

    Driving Directions from Stanford (approx 25 miles) :

    1.  Take I-280 N ramp from Stanford. Go ~~ 18 mi from Sand Hill Rd.
    2.  Take Skyline Blvd (CA-35) Exit to Pacifica. (0.9 + 1.2 miles)
    3.  Turn left at Sneath Lane and go uphill all the way.

    Beach. We'll stroll through the famous Sea Cliff neighborhood and then
    proceed to China Beach. At this point, we'll head back on El Camino
    Del Mar and pick up the De Anza Trail and follow that through the
    Presidio to Fort Winfield Scott. We'll reconnect with the Coastal
    Trail and retrace our steps back to the East Beach Parking Lot.

    I will be going to this place first time, So please feel free to
    suggest something if you want to add in this trip to make a fun trip.

Lake Tahoe Skiing Weekend (TK)

  • Destination: Incline Village, Lake Tahoe
    * Date: Mar 17 - 19
    * Length of Hike: 0
    * Elevation Gain: 5000 ft
    * Rain Policy: no cancellation
    * Driving time: 4 hrs

    We are going to North Lake Tahoe for a weekend of downhill skiing to
    try out our skills that we honed by watching the Winter Olympics.  I
    have booked a condo in incline village for 8 people in Mid March.   I
    haven't been to this place yet, but it appears to be nice enough.
    (Pics at http://www.tahoeinclinevillagecondo.com/tahoe_image.htm).

    All levels of skiers/boarders are welcome.

    We will leave on Mar 17, either early in the afternoon or late in the
    evening in order to avoid traffic. My current plan is to ski North
    Star on Saturday, but we'll decide as a group.  In the evening, we
    could cook for dinner if the group rather cook for fun. If not, we'll
    dine out at one of many places in Incline Village.  Afterwards, if
    people are not conked out enough, we'll gather around the fire and
    share games and stories. On Sunday, we will ski Alpine Meadow, Squaw
    Valley or Sugar Bowl on our way back home.

    The cost of the trip is as follows:

    - $37 for the lodging
    - $40 to $67 x 2 for lift tickets
    - $100 per car for the carpool expenses (to be divided between occupants).
    - $$ for dinning and other expenses

    I plan to fill the spots on first-come-first-serve basis with
    preference to drivers and recent trip "leaders". Once you are signed
    up, you will need to get me $37 within a few days to fully reserve
    your spot. (You can send me a check or paypal me). Please note that
    the money will be refunded in case you cancel only if the replacement
    is found.

    If you would like to join the trip, please email TK at
    sung.tk@gmail.com with information below.
    -  Your name:
    -  Your (cell) phone #:
    -  Can you drive? (must have an AWD or have chains)
    -  If yes, how many passengers/skis/boards can you carry?
    -  What time can you leave?
    -  The last time you lead a SOC trip?

    San Francisco is famous for its many intimate and distinct
    neighborhoods defined by the City's hills and for the striking views
    of San Francisco Bay and the Bay Area.  We will explore several
    charming hidden neighborhoods as we hike a largely north to south
    traverse of San Francisco.

    We will begin our hike at the Crissy Field Center near the
    northernmost point of San Francisco. From there we will walk eastward
    to the Palace of Fine Arts-- known for its classical architecture and
    lovely pond. Our route will then head southward through the Cow Hollow
    and Pacific Heights neighborhoods. We will stop at Alta Plaza Park to
    admire the lovely views of the area. Our southward hike will then
    continue to Alamo Square known for its views of downtown San Francisco
    and lovely Victorian houses. Next our route will take us through the
    Upper Market area to spacious Mission Dolores Park-- the site of San
    Francisco's original mission.

    We will then head westward to go to Tank Hill and Mount Sutro, which
    is topped by the giant Sutro Tower visible from throughout the area.
    After admiring the view from Mount Sutro, we will head back down to
    the Forest Hill Muni Station where we will descend by elevator into an
    engineering wonder and catch the Muni Metro northwards. After
    transferring to the Van Ness busline, we will arrive at the north

    along the shore of the bay through Fort Mason and the Marina Green
    back to Crissy Field Center.

    - Take the I-280 NORTH ramp towards SAN FRANCISCO
    - Take 19th AVENUE EXIT from I-280 in SF (only possibility is northward)

    PRESIDIO AVENUE (to make sure you make this transition correctly, get
    in the rightmost lane after you arrive at Golden Gate Park)
    - Continue northward on PARK-PRESIDIO
    - After passing through a tunnel, watch out for the DOWNTOWN/ MARINA
    BLVD. EXIT, which you should take (first exit after tunnel)
    - You will then be on Doyle Drive. Go to the leftmost lane and take
    the MARINA BLVD. EXIT, which will put you on MARINA BLVD heading EAST.
    - Your next goal is to arrange to travel WEST on MARINA BLVD. (Try
    either making a right turn onto a sidestreet and then looping back to
    Marina Blvd or make a left turn into one of the parking lots on Marina
    Green and then loop back to Marina Blvd)
    - When you are HEADING WEST on MARINA BLVD, you will encounter a
    stoplight where you can veer right to get off Marina Blvd and head
    into the Presidio/ Crissy Field.
    - You are now on MASON STREET and the CRISSY FIELD CENTER will be to
    your left (at the corner with HALLECK STREET).

    * The map: http://www.co.sanmateo.ca.us/smc/department/home/0,,5556687_12305995_12328410,00.html

     * The Description:
    The serpentine grasslands of Edgewood Park and Natural Preserve are
    famous for their magnificent displays of wildflowers each spring.
    This is a varied hike with stunning views of the bay and ridges, some
    wooded stretches, sweeping grasslands with (hopefully) amazing
    wildflowers, and, if we're lucky, some wildlife.

    Edgewood Park is set on Serpentine, the California State Stone, which
    holds very little water and is toxic to many non-native plants. As a
    result, this is a place where native species, including the
    wildflowers this park is famous for, can play out their full adaptive
    advantage.

    We will begin our hike at the Old Stage Trail Head Lot from
    which we will walk south on Sylvan trail under the canopy of old oak
    trees. Following Sylvan trail uphill to the southwest, we will
    eventually emerge from the forest to enjoy the beautiful view of the
    San Francisco bay on live oak trail. Backtracking our steps to
    Ridgeview loop, which we will follow northwest next, we will enjoy
    more stunning scenery through typical native California vegetation and
    finally emerge on Franciscan trail, which goes northeast through
    serpentine grasslands. This trail should offer some of the best
    wildflowers and possibly butterflies. We will return to Old Stage
    Trail Head walking east on the second leg of Sylvan trail.

    DIRECTIONS to Edgewood Park from Stanford:
    - Take Interstate 280 north to San Francisco
    - Take the Edgewood Road exit
    - Follow Edgewood Road to the east, the park will be on your right
    side. Do NOT use the parking lot immediately next to the highway,
    instead:
    - follow edgewood road east for about 1.5 miles
    - turn right into the driveway of the main park entrance on the south
    side of the road (your right side)
    - park and proceed to old stage trail head

Havasu Canyon is a branch of the Grand Canyon. It is a beautiful area
with fascinating rock formations and spectacular waterfalls. This trip
will focus mainly on the water, with day hikes to the three waterfalls
and a possible excursion to the mouth of the canyon, where the Havasu
river empties into the Colorado.

We will be driving Friday (almost full day) to arrive at the
trailhead.  We can camp there for the night.  Saturday morning, we'll
hike down to the campground near the Supai village (about 10 miles one
way).  Sunday we'll explore around the falls - there is Havasu Falls,
Navajo Falls, Mooney Falls, and Beaver Falls (about 6-7 miles round
trip) - there are some nice swimming holes and great spots for
photography.  Or, if people are interested and have the energy, we can
continue and reach the confluence with the Colorado river where Havasu
canyon meets the main Grand Canyon (about 16 miles round trip).
Monday, we'll head out early, hopefully reaching the cars around noon.
 Then we'll head back, reaching the bay area late that night.

have full canteens for the hike in. There will be no water until Supai
Village, about 8 miles in. There are apparently a couple of
overpriced, understocked "general stores" in Supai village, but don't
count on them for anything crucial.

Ventana Double Cone Day Hike (Eng-Shien & Lauren)

  • Distance:   30 miles roundtrip
    * Elevation:  culmative gain/loss of >7500ft
    * Difficulty:   Extreme
    * Pace:        Fast
    * Cost:        $18/car + $12/campsite + $5 per person day use fee
    * Rain Policy: >20% rain on Sunday cancels trip (http://tinyurl.com/ldpja)

    * Meet:
    - Either 11AM Saturday, April 8 at P&TS
    - or Saturday 8PM at Bottchers Gap campground
    - or Sunday 6AM (sharp) at Bottchers Gap trailhead

    At 4,853 feet (1,479 meters), Ventana Double Cone offers an
    unobstructed 360-degree view of the Santa Lucia Range. The trail is
    along ridgelines with an intermediate peak, giving a good view of Big
    Sur. There is also a good chance we might see some nice spring
    wildflowers.

    Although typically done as a 3 day backpacking trip, we will being
    doing this as a day hike. The trail is long and steep, with lots of
    elevation gain and loss. We will need to hike moderately fast.
    Finally, your trip leaders have not done this hike before and the
    trail is reputed to be overgrown and difficult to follow.

    - 20F sleeping bag
    - tarp or tent
    - water as the campsite does not have any

    We will take off late Saturday morning and hit Dharma's in Santa Cruz
    for lunch ( http://dharmaland.com/). Afterwards, we will do a 5 mile
    warm up hike in Garrapata State Park (http://tinyurl.com/gklsj ) and
    hang out on the beach if we have time. We will grab dinner in Carmel
    before heading to Bottchers Gap campground to spend the night near the
    trailhead.

    For convenience, most of us will sleep in the open on a tarp.

    ---------------
    Sunday, April 9
    ---------------

    For the day hike, please bring
    - headlamp or flashlight
    - two "lunches" plus snacks
    - 3 liters water (15 mile stretch with no water)
    - water filter or purification tablets, if you have them
    - rain jacket and fleece
    - long pants for poison oak and ticks
    - recommended: map & compass
    - recommended: change of clothes and shoes in car, more water

    We wake up 5:30AM, have a quick snack, and start hiking at 6AM in the
    dark on Skinner Ridge Trail. From all the trip reports, the initial
    trail is faint and easy to lose. At 4 miles, we should reach Devil's
    Peak. At ~7 miles, we should hit Pat Springs where we will fill up
    with water for the summit and back (15 miles). Note: the trail
    continues left about 200 yards *back* from Pat Springs: many people
    seem to get lost here.

    We should reach the summit around noon, hang out for 30 minutes or so,
    and then start heading down to get back to the cars around 6PM and
    hopefully home by 9PM.

    Absolute turn around time is 2PM. Everyone not already heading back at
    2PM should do so.
