July 03: Meeting and Potluck Dinner

  • Time: 6:45pm
  • Place: Dining room of the Becthel International Center
Meet other outdoor enthusiasts and help plan our activities for the next quarter by attending our meeting and potluck dinner on Thursday July 3rd at 6:45pm in the "Dining room" at the Bechtel International Center, Stanford University. Please bring some food or a beverage to share. (We will have access to a stove and a microwave to heat food.)

Note: This meeting will have a special AGENDA:

  1. The president announces his resignation. A new president will be elected at the beginning of the fall quarter. Anyone who is interested in the position should contact the outgoing president.
  2. Should the Outing Club become an official University-recognized organization? Currently we are not. Erik and/or Arturo gives a briefing on the issue, but a decision does not have to be made until September.
  3. Trip planning for the summer.
If you have trip suggestions but can't come to the meeting, please send your ideas by e-mail to Erik ( boman__no_spam__sccm.stanford.edu) before the meeting.

New prospective "members" (we have no fees or formal membership) are welcome to come and learn about the club.

July 12: Pogonip and Cowell Redwoods

  • Length of hike: 8 miles
  • Elevation gain: ~1000 feet
  • Meet: 8:00 am at the Bechtel Center, Stanford
  • Driving: approx. 1 hr each way
This hike will take us from Santa Cruz to Felton. Along the way, we'll go through two parks, cross the San Lorenzo River several times without the benefit of bridges(!), and watch a railroad handcar race. This is a one-way hike which will involve a car shuttle to get back.

We'll start by hiking through the redwoods and grasslands of Santa Cruz's Pogonip Park, which will take us to Highway 9. After crossing the road and hiking along the railroad track for a short distance, we'll find ourselves in Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. Thern it's down to and across the San Lorenzo River, which shouldn't be more than 2-3 feet deep. A few more miles through the forest and we'll wind up at Roaring Camp in Felton to watch the annual railroad handcar races.

We have never done this hike before so everybody must stick together and help with the map reading. The total distance is about 8 miles and the elevation ranges between 100 and 800 feet (but we go up and down several times). The only really steep hill is when coming up from the river.

Wear shorts for the river crossings. It can be slippery, and there is always a possibility of broken glass at the bottom, so it is recommended you bring a pair of sandals or old jogging shoes with you.

Trip "leader": Mike Bitsko, ph: (408) 457-8633.

July 19: Mission peak Sunset/Moonlight Hike

  • Length of hike: 6 miles
  • Elevation gain: 2100 feet
  • Meet: 4:30 pm at the Bechtel Center, Stanford
  • Driving: approx. 1 hr each way

In an attempt to "beat the heat" that usually accompanies us on the East Bay hikes this time of year, we'll start this hike in the late afternoon. We should arrive at the summit of Mission Peak just after sunset, where we'll have our evening meal. There should be quite a bit of moonlight for our hike back down.

We'll start the hike from the southern entrance of Mission Peak Regional Preserve. We'll make a loop, starting on the Peak Meadow Trail, to Horse Heaven trail, and up the Peak Trail. On the way down, we'll come back on Hidden Valley Trail.

The pace going uphill will be relatively slow, as a 2100' climb over such a short distance is a bit steeper than the typical Outing Club hike.

IMPORTANT: Every hiker must bring at least one _working_ flashlight. We'll have moonlight on the way down, but there will be areas where the moonlight just isn't enough.

Also, it can get pretty breezy at the summit, so bring a light windbreaker just in case.

Please contact the leader if you wish to arrange to meet the group at Mission Peak Regional Preserve, instead of at the Bechtel International Center.

July 26: Muir Woods to Mt. Tamalpais

  • Length of hike: ~13 miles
  • Elevation gain: approximately 2200 ft.
  • Meet: 8:00 am at the Bechtel Center, Stanford
  • Driving time: 1 to 1.5 hours (each way)
Come join us for this hike from Muir Woods to Mount Tamalpais. Muir Woods is located about one-half hour drive north of San Francisco. We will start our hike with at the main trail loop which goes through the only large, intact stand of ancient redwoods in the Bay Area. Then, we will go uphill through a mixed forest of redwoods and broadleafed bays and maples to the Old Railroad Trail. Then, we will hike on a fireroad to the summit of Mount Tamalpais (2600 ft) to enjoy (if the day is clear) the view of the North Bay. From there, we will take a long loop back to Muir Woods.

And as usual: Optional dinner in San Francisco on the way home.

Aug 2-3: Mt. St.Helena + Russian River canoe

Last year we did a successful canoe trip on the Russian River in Santa Rosa County. We will follow up this success this summer, but the trip will be a bit different.

Overview:

Sat Aug 2:
Drive up to Calistoga, hike Mt.St.Helena (4344ft), and maybe visit a winery. Camp overnight (you can also find a motel or B&B if you prefer).

Sun Aug 3:
All day (11 miles, 5hr) canoe trip on the Russian River at Trowbridge's in Healdsburg. This is the same place as last year, but this time we will do the lower section (smoother). Dinner on the way back to the Peninsula.

Option:
If you only want to come for the canoeing on Sunday, you can leave _early_ Sunday and meet us in Healdsburg at 9am.

Skills required:

The canoe part should be suitable for beginners. Swimming is possible certain places. Life vests will be provided. Although there are few canoe accidents, there is always an element of risk and you will need to sign a liability release form.

Cost:
The canoeing will cost about $20 per person.
There will be two people per canoe.
Overnight stay and gas cost are extra.

Sign-up:
There will be two steps. First, send email to me (boman__no_spam__sccm.stanford.edu) before July 13th to sign up. Please indicate if you want to come for both days or only Sunday.

Hopefully we'll be able to make a reservation for everybody. We will then need a prepayment of $20 to confirm your spot. If somebody drops out or doesn't pay, we will make those spots available to people who missed the first sign-up deadline.

Aug 9: Muir Woods - Dip Sea Trail

This weeks hike is on Sat August 9th (at 8:30) and once again starts at Muir Woods. However instead of going up to MT Tamalpais (as we did 2 weeks ago), we will be going down to the Ocean, so we will be on completely different trails than before. The hike will be about 10-12 miles and about 1,500 feet elevation.

This is my most favorite hike that we do, and if you come you will see why. We start at Muir Woods where you will see the giant redwoods, then we will hike to Pantoll via the Bootjack and Tcc Trail (I have never been on the Tcc Trail, but I am told this is beautiful!) Then we will continue down to Stinson beach via the Matt Davis trail and have lunch on the Ocean. No we will not be taking the bus back up!! But will go back to Muir Woods via the Dipsea trail. Most of this hike is in the shade, however some is in the sun so you will need lots of water and sunscreen, and if the fog is in it may be cold!!

Muir Woods parking lot is small so we will need to car pool. If you would like to meet us there (at 10:15) please e-mail me at ettinger__no_spam__leland.stanford.edu. This hike will take pretty much all day, so some of you may want to stop for dinner in San Fran. Also a new $2-3 charge is needed to get into Muir Woods, so please bring enough money for this and car pooling.

More details will be posted a few days before the trip

Aug 16-17: Big Basin HQ to Wadell Beach backpacking trip

NB: This trip has been postponed until beginning of October!!

  • Meet: *8:00am* at the Bechtel Center on Aug 16
  • Length of hike: 25 miles
  • Elevation diff: >1000 ft
The trip will start from the Big Basin Park Headquarters on Aug 16 (Saturday). We will hike to Wadell beach(12.5 miles), spend the night there and hike back on Aug 17 (Sunday). The hike contains some spectacular views and also allows us to spend some great time on the beach.

The trip will be limited to a maximum of 12 people. So please send a message to Vijay (vijay__no_spam__redbrick.com) ASAP if you are interested. As usual preference will be given to people who have lead trips before.

*NOTE*: This is a backpacking trip, so you will need to have the usual equipment such as a backpack and a sleeping bag. But, this will not be a very strenuous trip so experience is not required.

Trip "organizer": Vijay Raghavan (vijay__no_spam__redbrick.com)

Aug 16: Angel Island

  • Length of hike: 6-8 mi (very easy, see below)
  • Meet: 8am SHARP at the Bechtel Center, Stanford
  • Driving time: approx. 1 hour each way
  • Cost: $10 (for ferry and park entrance fee). Plan also for carpool cost, parking and optional dinner.
Please try to arrive before 8AM as we will be leaving promptly in order to catch the first ferry to the island.

This outing club event is going to be a little different from the hikes we've been doing recently. Angel Island just doesn't have enough hiking trails to occupy us for the entire day. We'll probably have a more leisurely day than the pure hike, i.e.. lots of time for frisbee, lying in the sun, extended siesta, historical poking around, etc. Be prepared for San Francisco type weather: the boat ride could be windy and chilly (even if it's a 100 degrees in Stanford) and it could get quite warm in the island.

The "official" Description: (from the ferry company)

"A California State and Wildlife Preserve, Angel Island is perhaps one of the finest historical sites in the Bay Area, and includes military garrisons and compounds from every major war, dating back to the U.S. Civil War. Also known as the Ellis Island of the West, Angel Island's immigration station was the first stop for millions of Pacific Basin, Asian, and Russion immigrants entering the U.S. Travel time to Angel Island is generally 40 minutes, depending on intermediate stops."

My description (with some contributions from Gilbert)

We will carpool to San Francisco and we will take the Blue and Gold Ferry in Pier 41 to Angel Island. For those of you that have gone to Angel Island before, note that the ferry is now boarded in a different place: Pier 41 (this is because the Angel Island route is now served by a different company). We'll take the 10:00 am ferry to Angel Island.

In the Island, we will take a paved perimeter road that is about 4-5 miles long. Then as we get closer to the center of the island (which is higher up the mountain), we will take a hiking trail that leads to the peak. The view from the top is magnificent, if the weather is clear (however, in the summer, there is a high probability that it'll be foggy).

We will return in the last ferry at 4:40pm. Optional dinner afterwards in San Francisco.

Trip leader: Arturo Crespo (crespo__no_spam__cs.stanford.edu). Phone: (415) 497-2047 (h)

Aug 31: "Unofficial" kayak trip

A kayaking trip is being planned for Saturday Aug. 30 (Full day trip). The trip consists of a visit to Elkhorn Slough Estuary located near Moss Landing in Monterey Bay.

As usual, we will meet at the Bechtel Center and carpool from there. Cost is $35 to $40 depending on the number of particpants.

Email Sali at sali_latmani__no_spam__amat.com if interested. Space is limited, fisrt-come first-served (max 20 people). Previous kayaking experience a plus but not essential.

Aug 31: Pt. Reyes

Length of hike: 12-13 miles
Meet: *8:30* am at the Bechtel I-Center, Stanford
Driving time: almost 2 hours each way

Pt. Reyes National Seashore is located north of San Fransisco and is one of the most popular recreational parks in the Bay Area. We have visited Pt. Reyes quite frequently, trying different trails. This time we will do the "classic loop". We start at the Bear Valley Visitor Center, hike up to Mt. Wittenberg (1407 feet), and continue down to Sculptured Beach where we probably have our lunch break. There are some nifty rock formations to explore on the beach. Then we follow the Coast Trail with nice views of the Pacific Ocean south to Arch Rock. From there we take the Bear Valley Trail back (a mostly paved road/trail).

Optional dinner after the hike, so bring some money.

Please note that the trip "organizer" has not done this trip before, but the trails are well marked so that should not be a problem.

Trip Leader: Doug Smith ( des__no_spam__leland.stanford.edu). Doug will meet the group at Pt. Reyes. Vijay will help organize carpools at Stanford. You can alternatively meet the group at the Bear Valley Visitor Center at 10:30, but please let Doug know.

How to get to Pt. Reyes:

Take 280 or 101 north and cross Golden Gate Bridge. Right after Marin City take Sir Francis Drake Blvd west (the signs will say San Anselmo, it's the exit after Lucky Drive). Eventually you end up at Hwy 1 in Olema. Turn right and then almost immediately take a left and follow the signs to the Park Headquarters and Visitor Center.

Sep 6: Butano State Park

Elevation diff: >1500ft
Meet: 8:30am at the Bechtel Center, Stanford
(Or optionally at the Butano parking lot at 9:45)
Driving time: 70 min. (each way)

Butano State Park stretches almost from Big Basin to the Pacific Ocean. We'll do a loop hike of 11-13 miles and quite a bit of up and downhill. We'll start near the park entrance and go up the Jackson Flat trail. The trail will go through both redwood forest and later open areas with great views of the surrounding hills and canyons (and the ocean, if not foggy/cloudy). The return is down the Ano Nuevo trail which is quite steep with lots of switchbacks. Optional detour to a beach on the way home if the weather is nice and it is not too late.

The weather near the coast is unpredictable, so bring a sweater in case it is foggy and chilly, but also bring lots of water since it can be really hot and sunny!

The trip leader has never been to the park but he likes the name and has a map. This means that any help in finding the right trails will be welcomed. The drive to the park entrance is about 70 minutes. You can take HW84 over to HW1. Take a left on HW1 and then a left again on Pescadero. Now follow the signs to Butano park. You'll make a right again on Pescadero a little ways from the ocean.

Please contact the leader if you are planning to meet the group at the park.

Sep 13; Big Basin

Length of hike: ~11 miles
Elevation gain: 500 ft.
Meet: *9:00* am at the Bechtel Center, Stanford
Driving time: 1 hour (each way)

Big Basin Redwoods State Park, located about 23 miles north-west of the city of Santa Cruz, is California's oldest State Park. Because of the recent temperatures, we'll be staying almost exclusively in the Redwood forest, which should keep us reasonably cool. Our hike will take us along the Sunset Trail, out to the Berry Creek Falls, then back along the Skyline to the Sea Trail. This is the "Three waterfalls" hike which the club has done many times; however, this time of year, there may not be much water in the waterfalls. The 500 ft. elevation gain is somewhat misleading, as there is a bit of up and down. The hike is of moderate difficulty, somewhere in between easy and strenuous.

Please contact the leader if you are planning to meet the group at the park.

Sep 19-21: Last Chance Peak/Eureka Valley Dunes

Hello Fellow Adventurers!

You might have noticed on the schedule of summer quarter club activities a planned overnight trip to Mt. Whitney for the weekend of 9/20-21 Well as I expected, it was impossible to reserve a permit for that weekend, so I've decided to move the trip one mountain range farther to the east.

What: Last Chance Peak/Eureka Valley Dunes

Where: 50 miles east of Big Pine (junction of 395 and 168) on the Death Valley Rd.

When: 9/19-9/21. I envision leaving on Friday morning and driving out to Eureka Valley (7-8 hrs) by way of Tioga Pass. We will day hike up Last Chance Peak on Saturday, and on Sunday morning climb on the dunes or make an excursion up into the White mountains.

Who: Whoever is interested. Just send me a note and I'll put you on the list. This will be a joint trip with a group of friends from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, so it could be a big group (~30 last year).

How: This will be car camping, with day hikes. Since we are not camping in an organized campground in Eureka Valley, we will need to bring all our water along with us. In Sept. it can get very hot on the valley floor during the day, and very cold at night, so be prepared for extremes.

That's it for now. Send me a message if you're interested and I'll put you on the list. We'll arrange car pools and equipment as the date approaches. Happy Trails!

Sep 27: Golden Gate NRA

  • Length of hike: approx. 8-12 miles
  • Meet: 9:00 am at the Bechtel I-Center, Stanford
  • Driving time: 1 hour (each way)

Hike description:

This hike will be a bit unusual because we have not planned it in detail. What we do know, is that we will hike around in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area right north of the bridge. (Jarek claims he will be able to guide us around, and hopefully Rachel will get hold of a trail map of the area.)

In clear weather one has great views of the Pacific Ocean and the Golden Gate bridge, but it is often foggy. Bring a windbreaker or jacket in case it is windy along the coast. As always, bring your own lunch and enough water/drinks for the day.

Optional dinner in San Francisco on the way back.

New students, post-docs etc. are welcome to join us!
