Russian Ridge Hike (Bill)

Location: Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve
Meet: 9:30 Friday 4/2 Bechtel I-Center
Distance 4.4 miles
Elevation Change: 550 feet
Bring: A little water, any snacks you might want, and a maybe a raincoat

Driving time: 30 minutes
Driving Distance: about 10 miles
Directions: Take Page Mill Road east past 280 and all the way up the ridge to Skyline Boulevard. Cross Skyline (the road becomes Alpine) and take an almost immediate right into the parking lot.
Cost: Mileage

Description: This is one of my favorite easy hikes and a good opportunity (especially for people new to the area) to get some idea of some of the places in the Bay Area to go hiking. Our route follows the Bay Area Ridge Trail to the Mindego Ridge Trail to the Hawk Ridge Trail and back to the Bay Area Ridge Trail. From there we will ascend Borel Hill, the highest named point in San Mateo County, which has a nearly 360 degree that encompasses Stanford, San Francisco, and Oakland. Also visible are the Pacific Ocean, Monte Bello, Mission Peak, and if its not too hazy Mt. Tamalpais and Mt. Diablo.

* Destination: Ohlone Wilderness between Mission Peak Regional Park and Sunol Regional Wilderness
* Date: April 10 (Sunday)
* Total length of hike: 8.66 miles
* Total elevation gain: 1000 feet
* URL: http://www.ebparks.org/
* Driving distance/time:
* Cost: mileage, dinner, $2 map (yes, technically each person on the Ohlone Wilderness Trail must have a map... I don't make the rules, but I will buy several of them back for the following week's backpacking trip)
* Rain Policy: Forecast of severe weather (thunderstorms or heavy wind/rain) cancels, otherwise we're on
* Meet: 10:30 am at the Bechtel I-Center, Stanford 11:15 am at Mission Peak Trailhead, 11:30 am Sunol Visitor Center
* Estimated finish time: 5:00 PM (back at trailhead)
* bring: lunch, sunscreen, plenty of water, coat, all the usual stuff.
* NO NEED TO RSVP if you are meeting at Stanford
- If you're meeting at Sunol, email Vic at vicv (at) xilinx (dot) com and let him know how many cars and people will be meeting there
- If you're meeting at Mission Peak, email Craig at cfoster01@yahoo.com and let him know how many cars and people will be meeting there. We will pick up a map for you.

Over the next two weeks I will be hiking the entire Ohlone Wilderness Trail from Mission Peak to Del Valle. There is no expectation that you need to attend part II if you want to come just on part I. This part is a moderate, 8.66-mile hike from Mission Peak to Sunol Regional Wilderness. Or, if you prefer, you can come up from Sunol regional wilderness, over mission peak, and down the bay side. Either way, expect nice views of both the bay and the east bay hills. Vic and I will be leading trips in opposite directions, we'll meet halfway for lunch, exchange keys, and meet in Milpitas for an optional dinner and exchange cars back.

Directions to Mission Peak via Coyote Hills (to get map):

1)Take 101 North. Exit on Willow Rd (84 East/Dumbarton Bridge). Cross Dumbarton bridge.
2) Take Paseo Parkway North, turn left on Patterson Ranch Road to Coyote Hils Interpretive Center
3) Return to 84 East
4) Take I 880 (NIMITZ FWY) heading south
5) Take the MISSION BLVD exit towards I-680/SACRAMENTO
6) Merge into MISSION BLVD and drive for 1.5 miles
7) Turn right on STANFORD AVE and park at the end, above Weibel Winery.

Driving to Sunol Regional Wilderness (pick up maps there):

Take 101 North. Exit on Willow Rd (84 East/Dumbarton Bridge). Cross Dumbarton bridge. Continue on 84 East over 880. While driving on 84 be extra careful as the roads turns several time and the sign are small (a specially missed turn is a *left* turn on the traffic light just after crossing the railroad tracks). Continue on 84 on Nyles Canyon. After a while, you will find the intersection of 84, Calaveras Rd. and 680. Turn right on Calaveras Road. Turn left on Geary Rd (this turn is just before Calaveras Rd. start climbing steeply up-hill). Geary Rd. dead ends in the park.

Wildflowers at Point Reyes (Maria M.)

* Hike Intensity: Leisurely, will be enjoying the views, wild flowers, and taking pictures.
* Length of Hike: 10:30 am to 4:30 pm (about 6 hrs of hiking or 10mi)
* When: Sunday, April 10
* Meet: 8:30 AM at Bechtel--leave at 8:45AM

* Cost : ~$33 per car for gas (split btw. passangers) and $5 bridge toll
* Rain Policy: cancels trip.
* NO NEED TO RSVP

Hike details:
We will be taking the Coast Trail out of Palomarin Trailhead to Pelican Lake. It has a steady procession of blooms with good variety according to a recent SF chronicle article. We will be traipsing past canyons and terraces in a mixed forest of Douglas fir, bishop pine, and occasional blue oak. Then we will reach Bass Lake followed by Crystal Lake, and continue on to Alamere Falls that topples over a cliff onto serene Wildcat beach. If time permits we will go towards the ocean. There the trail winds past orange bush monkeyflower and coyote bush, offering glimpses of twin shale outcroppings called Double Point. We'll also get great views of the seastack Stormy Stack. We will retrace our steps back to the trail head and make plans for dinner. Think of good spots to eat in San Fransisco near highway 1.

Some recommendations:
- Bring a camera
- Bring lunch and snacks.
- Bring lots of water.
- Dress warmly and bring a jacket; extra clothes if you get cold easily. The coast can be cold and windy
- Protect from sun exposure. Wear sunglasses, a hat, long sleeve shirt, and put on sun screen.
- Bring binoculars to better see wildlife.

Note that for this trip, drivers will get $.25 per mile, instead of $.15 per mile as normal Stanford Outing Club policy because of current gasoline prices and to give drivers more incentive to volunteer.

Kirby Cove Car Camping + Lighthouse Hike (Paul)

General description: Car camping with a view of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco at night. Short dayhike to the Point Bonita Lighthouse at the western tip of the Marin Headlands on Sunday.

Departure: Sat, Apr 16, 12pm from Stanford/Bechtel
Return: Sun, Apr 17, 4-5pm
Cost: $5-10 per person for permits, firewood, other group items.

Kirby Cove Campground is situated just west of the Golden Gate Bridge in the Marin Headlands. (See link to pdf map.) It is a small secluded campground on the water from which you can see both the bridge and the city in the background. Included are also a few other links which best describe the place.

http://users.rcn.com/morgen/lovefest/kirby.html

The general plan is to leave from Stanford at noon on Sat. We should get to the campsite in 1-2 hours, then set up camp and chill the rest of the afternoon.

Then comes dinner. We hope to make this a luxury camping trip with all the trapping of home. I hope to do a group-style dinner with folks either bringing ready-dishes or making it there. (So far, I know we have a BBQ grill, a crab pot going and a pot roast once I find a large enough dutch oven.)

On Sunday, we can do a short dayhike someplace in the Marin Headlands before heading back. Pack a picnic lunch and perhaps we can go eat at the lighthouse at Point Bonita. (Another place with great views of the city.)

Also, given our permit restrictions, we have to keep the group size limit at 20 people (and 6 cars). If you are interested, I ask that you reply early with following info.

1) # of people
2) Can you drive own car? If so, passengers you can take?
3) Have you lead an outing club trip (or plan to do one soon)?

Thanks,
Paul

Ohlone Wilderness Trail Part II, Backpacking, April 15-17 (Craig)

* Depart: Friday Afternoon, April 15
* Return: Early evening Sunday
* Distance: Approximately 22 miles
* Elevation change: 3000 feet
* Driving time: about 1 hour each way
* Cost: mileage, permits ($12.75 per person), Sunday dinner
* Maximum number of people: 10

Part I and part II are separate trips. Your participation in one does not affect your likelihood of getting into part II, which is the following weekend.

I've wanted to do this trip for a couple years (apologies to Paul, but it's the only date I could get the permits). The Ohlone Wilderness is practically in our back yard, but is only accessible via other parks. There are no roads there. The rolling hills are common to the east Bay, and hopefully the wildflowers will be out. Highlights will include Mt.Rose, only a couple hundred feet shorter than Mount Diablo and with much less traffic, and Murrietta Falls.

We'll depart Friday afternoon for Sunol Regional Wilderness, and backpack 3.5 miles to Eagle's Eyre Camp, which is supposed to have very scenic views. The second day we enter Ohlone Wilderness and Camp at Stewart's Camp. The third day, we hike out via Del Valle, probably grab dinner up in Livermore, and drive home. Expect about ten miles a day Saturday and Sunday, with a fair amount of up and down.

If you're interested, let me know the following information:
* Name:
* e-mail:
* Are you willing to drive?
* If yes, how many people can you fit, with gear?
* Do you have:
    o a backpacking tent (number of people)?
    o a stove?
    o a water filter?
* Would you be willing to help with a car shuttle Thursday evening?
* Would you prefer to meet at Bechtel or Sunol?
* What is the earliest you can reach that destination?
* What is your preferred time to reach that destination?
* Do you prefer to bring your own food or plan with a small group?
* Do you have a cell phone number that you're willing to share with the group?
* Have you led an Outing Club trip in the past year?

Questions, contact trip "leader" Craig at cfoster01@yahoo.com or (650) 498-0771.

Ventana Wilderness Camping / Junipero Serra Peak / Big Sur, April 15-17 (Matt)

* Depart: Friday Evening, April 15 around 7:00
* Return: Early evening Sunday
* Hiking Distance: Approximately 12 miles on Saturday
* Elevation change: about 4000 feet
* Driving time: about 3 hours each way
* Cost: mileage, Sunday dinner

I've been wanting to get to the Ventana Wilderness for a couple years now, and spring is the best time to see the lush hillsides full of wildflowers. Our plan is to drive down Friday night after work, reaching the campsite at around 10:00. We can get dinner along the way. We are planning to stay at the Memorial park campground, which is near the trailhead.

Saturday morning, start up Junipero Serra peak. The peak is the highest in the Ventana Wilderness, reaching almost 6000 feet. The wildflowers should be in bloom, the views are spectacular, and there may even be traces of snow left from the winter. The hike on the Santa Lucia trail is a fairly strenuous 12 mile hike climbing about 4000 feet of elevation. Saturday evening, we'll enjoy dinner at the campsite and hang out a bit.

On Sunday, we'll head over to the beautiful Big Sur area, which includs beautiful sights along highway 1 in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, Garrapata State Park, the Bixby Creek Bridge, and Andrew Molera State Park. We won't have time to visit them all, but they are all spectacular.

Some useful websites:

Dry Creek Valley Wine Country Biking (Bill)

* RSVP required. Limited space on Bike racks
* When: Sunday, April 24
* Total length of ride: ~28 miles
* Meet: 8:00 am at the Bechtel I-Center, Stanford or 10:30 am at the Dry Creek General Store
* Time: 6 hours (3 on bike, 3 for lunch & wineries)
* Driving distance/time: 105 miles / 2 hours approx. each way
* Cost: Mileage + optional tastings & Dinner
* Start/Finish: street parking near Dry Creek General Store, 3495 Dry Creek Rd, Healdsburg, CA. Note that the store is closed on Sundays.

Dry Creek is one of the more beautiful and less travelled valleys in wine country. It is home to a number of small wineries, is fairly flat and not crowded, making it ideal for biking. This will be a leisurely trip on mostly flat roads. Either a road bike or mountain bike will be perfectly adequate. Space may be limited, depending on the number of people able to bring bike racks. If you are interesting in coming please email the following details:
a) Name
b) Do you have a car? How many people can it take?
c) Do you have a bike rack? How many bikes will it hold? (Even if you don't have a car, if you can find a bike rack, we can improvise w/ others who have cars)
d) Phone Number you can be reached at during the daytime.
e) I will let everyone know on Thursday if there are enough spots for everyone. As always, recent trip leaders will be given preference if there is not enough space for everyone.

LA: Deep Creek Hot Springs (Martin & Steve)

Date: April 29 - May 1

Who wants to join for a backpacking trip to "Deep Creek Hotsprings" in Hesperia in San Bernardino county, near LA? This will be the second annual Steve & Martin Hot Springs Trip; last year we went to Sespe.

Deep Creek is a beautiful desert hotsprings in a river canyon with pools so big and deep that you can dive in and swim in the hot water!! Holds MANY.

Camping is NOT allowed next to the pools, but there is a good site by the river about half-a-mile away.

Here is the plan:

Backpack, Fri - Sun, 4/29-5/1

We will only get to the trailhead late on Friday, since there is a 7+ hours drive from the Bay Area. It is an easy 6 mile mostly flat hike and with headlamps no problem in the dark if you know the route. (There IS an easy 2 mile route option with BIG downhill but this is not a good idea in the dark, requires a parking fee, and is less scenic than the 6 mile way.)

We will meet with a group from LA led by our local expert "Hot Springs Ethan" at the camp site.

Since the hike out is easy we can leave early Sunday morning and be out before noon leaving most of Sunday free for catch-up or driving.

We will aim to depart for Hesperia at 2 pm on Friday. As last year, this trip has been jointly announced on the Berkeley CHAOS list.

Please sign up with all your details: starting location, car, tent, stove, water filter, phone number, etc.

* Estimated finish time: 4 PM (back at starting point)
* Bring: lunch, sunscreen, plenty of water, coat (in case it is windy and foggy), all the usual stuff.

RAIN CANCELS.... In case of doubt, an e-mail will be sent the night before if the hike is going to be cancelled due to weather forecast.

NO NEED TO RSVP

Optional Dinner Afterwards in San Francisco

On this hike we will make a traverse roughly from east to west across San Francisco starting at the western entrance of Golden Gate Park near Ocean Beach. Golden Gate Park is San Francisco’s largest park built on top of what was originally an area of sand dunes at the end of the 19th century. This wonderful park has myriads of spots to explore that only a hike can reveal.--- a buffalo paddock, many lakes of various sizes, horse stables, museums (including the soon to be opened new DeYoung Museum of Art), and even one of the best flyfishing training ponds in the world! Many of these hidden gems were built by the Work Progress Administration during and after the Great Depression.

We will start at the lovely Queen Wilhemin Tulip Garden by the Dutch Windmill at the western entrance. We will then walk eastward all the way across the park, passing interesting sites along the way. We will then continue eastward through quaint residential neighborhoods and climb up to Buena Vista Park to enjoy the view. We will then continue eastward toward Duboce Park and then walk by the U.S. Mint on our way to Market Street-- The Big Slot as it was once called. We will then walk down Market Street to its foot at the Ferry Building on the waterfront, passing some historical buildings along the way.

There will be an optional early dinner in downtown. We will take the Muni Metro N-Judah line back to Ocean Beach, where we can spend a bit of time enjoying the beach and ocean.

DIRECTIONS to western entrance of Golden Gate Park from Stanford :

* Hike Description:
(thanks to Girish for allowing me to copy his identical March trip)

Join us for a strenuous ascent of Diablo's five main peaks (Twin Peaks, Eagle Peak, Mt Diablo, North Peak, Mt Olympia). This will be a difficult, fast-paced hike, but it's the definitive Mt. Diablo hike - the total mountain experience. It encompasses all of the park's life zones, from meadowlands to rocky summits, and the ever-changing views are simply stunning. A major portion of the loop consists of intimate single-track trails, in close encounter with the wilderness (including some unwelcome plants like poison oak for which we should keep a cautious eye).

For some folks who want to relax a bit ... you can skip North Peak and Mt. Olympia and spend time at the Diablo Summit and Interpretive center and later join us at the junction of Bald Ridge Trail with North Peak trail to catch us on the way back.

For this hike, we will start on the north side of Mt. Diablo in Clayton. We enter through the Regency Entrance ( Elevation 600 ft ) and hike up the Eagle Peak Trail. After a short but steep hike we will reach Twin Peaks at 1733 feet, followed by Eagle Peak at 2369 feet! Then, we continue to Deer Flat, Juniper Campground, and Juniper Trail to the Lower Summit Parking Lot. From there, we will hike to the summit of Mount Diablo. The summit itself (3849ft) is inside the Visitor Center rotunda, a short distance uphill. We return to the Lower Parking Lot along the Summit Trail to Devils Elbow, then to Prospectors Gap and on the North Peak Trail to North Peak (3557 feet) from which there is a great view. We then descend on a very rough and seldom used trail to a saddle from where it's an easy hike to our last peak: Mt. Olympia (2946ft). From Mt. Olympia, we return to the North Peak Trail, and follow the Bald Ridge Trail to the Back Creek Trail that will lead us right back to the cars.

This is a challenging hike, which some astoundingly steep stretches, but the result is exhilarating. Remember that this trip contains a lot of hill climbing so it will be a real workout! Expect the full hike to take 10 hours (excluding driving). Note that there are no facilities at our entry point so make sure you bring everything you need and stop for a restroom break on the way. There will be one opportunity half way the trip to refill water bottles.

Loon Lake Chalet (Paul)

* Date : May 6-8
* Destination : Loon Lake Chalet in the Eldorado Nat Forest, off I-50 between Sacramento and Tahoe
* Driving time : 4-5 hrs, each way
* Trip cost : $10-20 for your share of the permits

Hi folks. Guess what? We are not even going car camping ... this is a "drive up to a cabin in the woods" kind of trip! Laid back with good company, chill over some wine and cheese, or ... join the Polar Bear Club by going swimming in an alpine lake!

Here's the brief :
- Loon Lake Chalet in the Eldorado Nat Forest. Off I-50, east of Sacramento. At elevation of about 6000 ft so there is chance that there is still snow present.
- Large 3-story cabin. Used as a ski patrol station in winter, rented for rec use after May 1.
- Bunks, kitchen, water, etc. This is like a ski chalet on a trail system
- Has fireplace, even electric heat and lights!
- No fixed plans for what we will do there on Sat. Really depends on weather over the next week or so. There are hiking trails, good fishing in the lake, or this could just be another excuse to head out and have a relaxing weekend chilling with some hot chocolate by the lake.
- 20 people max so let me know early.
- Need drivers, particularly those with high clearance 4WD. 20-30 miles off I-50 on questionable road surfaces. Priority given by drivers then previous outing club trip leaders.
- I have permits for Fri and Sat night. The catch is need to be there by 4pm on Fri to pick up keys. Alternative is to go there early Sat morning. Will depend on members and preference. Some of us can go earlier first if that works too.
- See website below for pics and more info
- Disclaimer : Extreme weather (like heavy snow) over the next week may force cancellation of the trip. I don't want to have to ski in!

If you are interested, please respond and let me know the following :
1) # of people
2) Drive? What type of vehicle? # of passengers
3) Previous trip leader?
4) Preference for departure time. Fri afternoon or Sat morning?
5) Quiz question : Adult, 175lbs is injured in a stabbing incident. Losing blood rapidly, 200ml per minute. Paramedics were delayed and arrived only after 30 mins. No other medical care provided. How much blood did the victim lose?

Thanks,

This range is where you are likely to observe a social herd of Tule Elk. You can actually get quite close. Walk quietly and pause to take in these magnificent creatures. Sweeney Ridge Hike, Pacifica (Jane)

* Date: May 7 (Sat)
* Length of hike: 5.5-6 miles easy*
* Elevation change: ~700 feet
* Meet: 9AM Bechtel; 9:45 at trailhead, Near Parking lot 2.
* Distance: 30 miles ~35 minute drive each way
* What to bring: jacket (it can get breezy), sunscreen, water, camera, snacks (the usual)
* Rain Policy: cancels trip; no need to RSVP

* Please note that all carpooling (incl. Bechtel) will be SELF-organized. Trip Leader will be meeting hikers at the park.

Sweeney Ridge is a little south of San Francisco and on a clear day has stunning 360 views of the Pacific Ocean, Montara Mountain, and the San Francisco Watershed, including San Andreas Lake. On this walk, we will visit the Nike missile silos, a testament to the Cold War and the Portola Discovery Site, where in 1769 a group of Spaniards became the first Europeans to see the San Francisco Bay. During the first mile, we'll catch glimses of the S.F. County Jail through coyote brush and sage wildflowers, walk through a former Coast Guard Reservation, and traverse two short 35% slopes on our way to the top.

For more information:
http://www.nps.gov/goga/clho/swri/

The trail leaves from the south side of Skyline College (at Parking Lot #2)

Directions (from Stanford):
Take 280N. Take the Skyline Blvd. exit (Highway 35) to College Drive in San Bruno. Turn left onto College Drive. Go west (i.e. continue straight) on College until you reach the Skyline College campus, then turn left at the "T" junction.

*This should be a quick hike that will be taken at a moderate(?) pace with stops at the top of the ridge to enjoy the scenery. There are some steep steps but I anticipate that we will be finished by 12:30.

Beginning Caving Trip (Vic & Chris)

* Date: Saturday, May 14
* Depart: 9:30am Bechtel
* Destination: California Caverns (mammoth Cavern Expedition)

* Note: Based on the feedback I made reservations for California Caverns (mammoth Cavern Expedition) on May 14. We will meet outside Bechtel at 9:30 AM. Our reservations are for the 3 Hour tour at 1pm (since the 5 hour tour is only available after July). The cost will be 99$ per person - it does not include the rafting - but should still involve plenty of cave crawling.

* Special Instructions: The cave is wet and muddy this time of year: wear two layers. No special shoes, just solid hiking shoes or boots you don't mind getting dirty. They do recommend knee pads and elbow pads. There are showers, so bringing a spare change of clothes, bags to put the muddy ones in, and shower items (soap, towels, etc.) is recommended.

* Description, California Caverns (mammoth Cavern Expedition):
Groups explore the historic "Mammoth Cave" area and "Jungle Room," walking, crawling, wiggling, and squirming through natural passages that connect through thirteen chambers. This trip is perfect for those who desire something more than a walk, but less stamina is needed compared to the other adventures offered. All tight crawl ways and squeezes are optional. Trip time is about 2-3 hours.

You can also find information and pictures at http://www.caverntours.com/

I do need to give them a semi-accurate person count - so please RSVP to Vic (If you haven't already).

Henry Coe Beginner Backpacking (Bill S.)

* Date: May 14-15
* Length of hike: ~ 10 miles (2 days)
* Time and Place: 8:00 am at Bechtel on May 14th + Pre-trip Wednesday May 11 at 7pm.
* Driving time: 1hr 15min (54 miles) each way
* Rain policy: Rain cancels trip
* Costs: $2pp campsite fee, gas and gear rental.
* Group size is limited to 10 people + trip leader

Spring is a lovely time in Henry Coe park and an excellent time to start getting backpacking experience. If you haven't been backpacking before (or haven't been much) this will be a fun, not-too-demanding trip designed to give you a chance to be out in the woods at night.

Henry Coe does not have reserved backcountry sites, but the planned destination (depending on availability) is the China Hole campsite, about 5 miles into the park, right next to the swimming hole of the same name. We will meet at the Bechtel center at 8am Saturday morning and drive to the park headquarters. From here, we will hike in, set up camp and spend the afternoon swimming, exploring surrounding canyons and ridges or just lying out in the sun. There should be ample time to produce something on the more gourmet side of a backpacking dinner. Sunday morning we will break camp and hike out again, possibly by a different route.

Since this is a beginners trip, we will not require everyone to have all their own gear. Instead, we will hold a brief clinic on Wednesday night to discuss what you need to bring and how to pack. We will pick up additional group gear (tents, stoves etc) at the Redwood club gear shed Wednesday night. Stanford affiliates can also rent personal sleeping bags, pads and packs from Redwood, others will need to go to a camping store such as REI.

We will require advance sign-ups, please reply with the following by Tuesday, May 10th at 5 PM:
* Name:
* Do you have a car and, if so how may people will it take with gear?
* How much backpacking experience do you have (none is required)?
* Can you bring a backpacking stove?
* Can you bring a backpacking tent?
* Phone number(s) where you can be reached (cell preferred)

http://parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=454
http://parks.ca.gov/pages/454/files/castle_crags2.pdf

* Plan:
Will be leaving Bayarea at 7:00am on Saturday Morning. This is more of a short weekend outing with some short day-hike, an overnight stay, and BBQ'ing type of camping.

* Destination:
Castle Crags State Park. It's located right off interstate 5, about 50 miles North of Redding, in Dunsmuir. The park is a family-oriented camping place with running water and bathroom/toilet facility. Highway 5 disects the park into West and East section. On West side, there are 60+ reservable campsites w/ some access to wilderness as well as to a few great hiking trails, while Eastern side has only a dozen sites, offering access to riverfront with excellent opportunity for swimming, fishing and pit BBQ. With whatever precious time we have on this trip, we're going to spend it all on both sides of the park.

Upon arrival, we check in on riverside (East) and setup camp there. Afterwards, we bring some snacks for a short nature walk upstream. Just have fun soaking our feet wet and be lazy at some sandy/rocky access or fishing trouts for dinner (for those who interested in fishing). There are a lot of poison oaks on the trail so be careful. After the hike, we stake out a BBQ pit and pitch in for a group BBQ (quails/garlic breads/sis kebab...etc.). On Sunday morning, we packout and head on to the other side of the park to enjoy a little hiking up the popular rock-climbing trail, Spire Dome. It's about 2.9 mi. hike up.

Then go home. Will stop for lunch somewhere along the way.

* Notes: It's not a good idea to use the campsite faucet water for drinking and cooking, even though the park often tested it for safety and treated it well. You'll see why when you're there. Some activities as described herein are rather suggestive. Please do feel free to add anything you might like/have... Temperature can be freezing at night.

* Directions:
** Driver(s): We will arrange a "meeting point" to join up with Leader. And just follow the leader from there. Make sure you have your cell on.

--From Bayarea, use either 101 or 680 to connect to I-80 (depending on carpooling arrangements)
--Take the I-80 EAST exit toward SACRAMENTO
==> If using 101- go 55.0 mi [to get to I-505]
==> If using 680- go 15.20 mi [to get to I-505]
--Take the I-505 NORTH exit toward WINTERS/REDDING - go 34.2 mi
==> Then Merge onto I-5 NORTH
--Reset your odometer to "0" and keep heading North on I-5
--After 170 miles or so, look for Castella exit (exit #724)
--Turn right after exit and go for a couple yards to a T-intersection
--Make a left at intersection (Frontage rd.)
--After another couple yards down, you'll see another T-intersection
--Make a right at the T and cross over the narrow bridge
--Make a left once past the bridge and follow the curve (Riverside rd.) into the park. Entrance is to your left after .2 mile.

Spring is a lovely time in Henry Coe park, wildflowers are in abundance and the weather is still fairly cool. Henry Coe does not have reserved backcountry sites, Campsite will be assigned when we arrive Saturday morning, and we will hike there. Henry Coe is known for having lots of watering holes, so hopefully we will get to do a bit of swimming as well. Bill lead a trip there last weekend and gave great reviews on the wildflowers and general conditions.

Some possibile campsites:
* China Hole, next to a swimming hole of the same name
* Los Cruzeros, next to a creek where we can also go swimming and cool off after hiking.
Here is a description of getting to "Los Cruzeros" from Bill's trip last week: "It was also really cool to walk through the narrows to get there -- they were right along the creek, so we had to walk in the water several times."
*Or many other options depending what we get assigned.

We will meet at the Bechtel center at 7:30am Saturday morning and drive to the park headquarters. From here, we will hike in, set up camp and spend the afternoon swimming, exploring surrounding canyons and ridges or just lying out in the sun. There should be ample time to produce something on the more gourmet side of a backpacking dinner. We will have a group dinner and everyone will have a chance to show off their back-country culinary skills. :-)

Sunday morning we will break camp and hike out again, possibly by a different route.

We require advance sign-ups, please reply with the following:
* name:
* Do you have a car and, if so how may people will it take with gear?
* How much backpacking experience do you have? (none is required)
* Have you lead a outing club trip this year? (gives priority)
* What gear do you have (stove, tent, water filter, etc)?
* Phone number(s) where you can be reached (cell preferred)
* Let me know what you'd like to bring for dinner. (be creating and think of something original. No freeze dried food, or completely prepackaged meals :-) ) Let us know if you have any special dietary requirements. I will make appetizer/ main course/dessert groups.

* Meet: 11 am at the Bechtel I-Center, Stanford, or 12:30 trailhead
* Estimated Return time: 4 pm (trailhead)
* Rain policy: Forecast of thunderstorms or heavy rain cancels. Otherwise, we're on.
* NO NEED TO RSVP

* Directions:
- Take 280 N into San Francisco
- Take Highway 1 (19th Ave) through San Francisco and over the Golden Gate Bridge
- Continue on 101 N for 7.5 mi
- Take the Sir Francis Drake Blvd. exit toward San Anselmo (West) 6 mi
- Turn left on to Pacheco Rd. at the Fairfax sign
- Turn right immediately onto Broadway
- Drive one block and turn left onto Bolinas Road
- After .3 miles, bear right onto Cascade Dr. at a 3-road intersection
- Follow to Preserve entrance at end of road

Parking is limited and will be tricky. We may drop people off and shuttle some cars back toward downtown Fairfax to avoid upsetting the neighbors.

* Bring: lunch, sunscreen, plenty of water, coat, raincoat, swimsuit and towel (optional) and all the usual stuff.

This is going to be a pretty leisurely trip. We'll start by following the Cascade Fire Road from the end of the up Cascade Creek, and we'll take a right at the trail to Cascade falls. Since we're having a late start, we'll probably have lunch there, even though it's only about 3/4 mile in. The fall is not the biggest in the area, but is nonetheless supposed to be pretty. After lunch, we'll backtrack a bit, and head up and around to a swimming hole above the falls. We'll lounge around there for a while, and then head back when we get bored.

Since the trip is so short, we'll probably head back to Stanford and have an optional dinner there. Drop me a line if you have any questions

Description:
San Francisco is famous for its many intimate and distinct neighborhoods defined by the City?s hills and for the striking views of San Francisco Bay. Some of the nicest views and nicest neighborhoods are in the northeastern section of San Francisco. We will now explore the northeastern section of San Francisco as well as the scenic waterfront area along The Embarcadero.

We will begin our hike at Fort Mason from which we will walk southeastward to Russian Hill and some of its little known vista points. We will then hike over to Telegraph Hill -- which has Coit Tower at its summit-- to sample the view from the top and to walk down the secluded and charming Filbert steps. Next we will walk down to and along The Embarcadero-- the boulevard along the northeastern waterfront of SF-- to see the historic buildings and views along the waterfront, passing beneath the Bay Bridge along the way. We will likely make a special stop at the newly renovated Ferry Building (at the foot of Market Street) to quickly visit the new highly praised food court and farmers market area. Our hike will then loop back through the downtown area to Nob Hill, where we will visit charming peaceful Huntington Park and walk by some famous imposing buildings from San Francisco?s colorful past. From Nob Hill we will return to Fort Mason by walking through a portion of the Marina District.

DIRECTIONS to Fort Mason from Stanford
- Take the I-280 NORTH ramp towards SAN FRANCISCO
- Take 19th AVENUE EXIT from I-280 in SF (only possibility is northward)
- Stay on 19th AVENUE going north
- When you reach Golden Gate Park, 19th AVENUE transitions to PARK-PRESIDIO AVENUE (to make sure you make this transition correctly, get in the rightmost lane after you arrive at Golden Gate Park)
- Continue northward on PARK-PRESIDIO
- After passing through a tunnel, watch out for the DOWNTOWN/ MARINA BLVD. EXIT, which you should take (first exit after tunnel)
- You will then be on Doyle Drive. Go to the leftmost lane and take the MARINA BLVD. EXIT, which will put you on MARINA BLVD heading EAST.
- Continue down MARINA BLVD. until you reach the stoplight at BUCHANAN STREET (there will be a Safeway grocery store somewhat in front of you and to your right at this intersection) where you should turn left.
- You are now near the entrance to FORT MASON. Look for a parking space here or drive through the gates marked by the tan/white gatehouses and find a parking space.
- We will meet immediately in front of the main entrance to Green?s restaurant but across the street from this entrance. Green?s is in the first long building at Fort Mason.

Wilder Ranch State Beach (Jane)

* Location: Wilder Ranch State Beach, Santa Cruz,
* Date: Saturday June 11
* Length of hike: ~9-10 miles (moderately easy- see below)
* Elevation change: 400-500 feet
* Meet: 9AM Bechtel; 10AM at Wilder Parking lot
* Distance: 45 miles, 50 minute drive each way
* What to bring: jacket (may be breezy), lunch =, water, camera, sunscreen, the usual stuff.

* Description: Wilder Ranch is situated along the Central Coast just north of Santa Cruz. The site was originally the main farm supplying Santa Cruz Mission and later became a successful and innovative dairy ranch. The surrounding property includes gorgeous seaside walks to the cliffs at the edge of Monterey Bay and dramatic marine terraces. We will be walking to the Fern Grotto along the Old Cove Landing Trail and will lunch somewhere along the bluffs or the beach.

This should be a leisurely walk, moderate only in the sense that the distance is longer than for a typical "easy" hike. Feel free to walk as slow (or as fast) as you like. Since we'll be strolling near the ocean, elevation change is minimal with only a few gradually sloped hills.

* Optional: If there is interest, after the hike, we can treat ourselves to a stop at Marianne's Ice Cream (Ocean St) for a scoop of one of their 70+ homemade flavors.

* Directions (from Stanford):
- Take 280 South
- Merge onto CA-85 S toward GILROY (8 miles)
- Merge onto CA-17 S toward SANTA CRUZ. (22 miles)
- Take CA-Hwy 1 N toward CA-9/HALF MOON BAY/BOULDER CREEK

Wilder is located about 5 miles north of Highway 17 on Highway 1 above Santa Cruz. If you don't want to pay the parking fee ($6), there is a place to park along Highway 1 on the west side of the highway south of the entrance to the park but space is limited.

Big Sur (Andrew Molera S.P.) (Eng-Shien)

* Destination: Big Sur / Andrew Molera State Park
* Date: Friday June 24 - Sunday June 26
* Driving distance/time: 100 miles / 2.5 hours approx. each way
* Hiking: Moderate, 7-8 miles per day, up to 2k feet elevation gain
* Cost: Mileage + $8.00 parking fee
* Camping: Walk-in (1/3 mile), first come-first serve, 4 people per campsite
* Map: http://www.parks.ca.gov/lat_long_map/default.asp?lvl_id=221

**** Limit: 12 people, sign-up required *****

We will use Andrew Molera SP as a staging point to explore the northern part of the Big Sur coastline, visiting three state parks and a state reserve: Julie Pfeiffer Burns SP, Andrew Molera SP, Garrapata SP, and Point Lobos State Reserve. Given the number of items on the agenda, we will be getting up early and going to sleep late to give us time to enjoy the sights and take pictures. This is an overview of weekend:

We drive out Friday evening and camp at the Andrew Molera walk-in sites. The 24 sites (4 people/site) are 1/3 mile from the parking spot and are available on a first-come, first serve basis.

Saturday, we will have a quick breakfast and head out at ~9am to hike Andrew Molera SP (8 miles, 100 feet elevation gain). Afterwards, we will do the touristy thing and drive to see the McWay Waterfall at Julie Pfeiffer Burns S.P., stopping at Nepenthe for their views and a cup of coffee. If we have time, we might also do a 2 mile hike to a waterfall/overlook in Pfeiffer Big Sur S.P. and/or hang out on USFS Pfeiffer Beach ($5 fee per car). For dinner, there is the option of eating at a restaurant or cooking. I expect most people going the easier restaurant route. I'm thinking of cooking. Afterwards, we can hang out at the beach near camp until sunset (8:34PM).

Sunday, we will have breakfast, pack up, and head out at ~9:30AM. We will drive to Garrapata State Park and hike Soberanes Canyon Trail to the Rocky Ridge Trail of (7 miles, 1800 feet elevation gain). Afterwards, some cars might want to head back to the bay area. The rest will head to Point Lobos State Reserve and hang out until 7PM. Dinner in Santa Cruz, again for those who are interested.

If you would like to go, email me the following information:
* Name:
* Email:
* Do you need a ride?
* Do you need passengers? If so, how many people can your car fit with camping gear?
* When and where would you prefer to leave?
* Saturday dinner plans (restaurant or cook)?
* When do you want to head out Sunday (after the hike, after Pt Lobos, or after dinner)?
* Have you lead an Outing Club trip in the past year?

Note: If you are a passenger, your plans may be subject to your driver's desires. I will try to match up the carpools.
