Tue Oct 1 at 7pm: Meeting and Potluck Dinner

Meet other outdoor enthusiasts and help plan our activities for the fall by attending our meeting and potluck dinner on Tuesday Oct 1st at 7PM in the "English room" at the Bechtel International Center. Please bring some food or a beverage to share. (We will have access to a stove and a microwave to heat food.)

If you have trip suggestions but can't come to the meeting, please send your ideas by e-mail to Erik Boman (before the meeting.

Oct 5: The Forest of Nisene Marks

Length of hike: ~11 miles
Elevation gain: approximately 1100 ft.
Meet: 9:00 am at the Bechtel Center, Stanford
Driving time: 1 to 1.5 hours (each way)

The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park, near Santa Cruz, has a nice mix of redwood forest and more open vegetation (chapparel). This is where the epicenter of the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 was.

The park is pretty big and I'd like to keep this hike to the advertised 11 miles. Last spring, we hiked on the western ridge in this park, so this time, we'll be on the eastern side. Our route will take us by the epicenter of the '89 quake on the Aptos Creek Trail, which runs along a fairly impressive gorge, then on the Big Slide Trail up to White Lagoon.

Oct. 12: Stinson Beach hike

  • Elevation drop: 1500 feet (not too steep = some would say mostly flat, there is a ladder though present on the Steep Ravine Trail.
  • Distance: about 7 miles
  • Departure: 8:30 a.m. sharp at the Bechtel Center, Stanford (if you live significantly north of Stanford and want to meet directly at Stinson Beach please e-mail the "leader"
  • Driving time: 1.5 hours each way
  • Other:
    • Some siesta gear (frisbee, chocolate, etc :) may be useful
    • Please do not forget to take some small change not only for the carpool but also for the bridge tool ($3) and a couple of $ for the bus.
    • The optional San Francisco dinner will feature a brand new restaurant again!
This hike will be an easy one. We will go long the scenic Stinson Beach (the beach is mostly flat :), have a lunch and then catch a Golden Gate Transit bus form Stinson Beach to Pantoll Ranger Station. Then we will hike down on following the Steep Ravine trail(a similar hike last December followed the Old Mine and Lone Tree trails - Ravine is quite different and as spectacular in its own way) and then turn on Dipsea trail (with the current weather we should get really nice views there) leading back to the beach.

Oct. 19: Pt. Reyes

  • Length of hike: 13 miles
  • Meet: 8:30am at the Bechtel I-Center, Stanford
  • Driving time: almost 2 hours each way
Pt. Reyes National Seashore is located north of San Fransisco and is one of the most popular recreational parks in the Bay Area. We have visited Pt. Reyes quite frequently, trying different trails. This time we will do the "classic loop". We start at the Bear Valley Visitor Center, hike up to Mt. Wittenberg (1407 feet), and continue down to Sculptured Beach where we probably have our lunch break. There are some nifty rock formations to explore on the beach. Then we follow the Coast Trail with nice views of the Pacific Ocean south to Arch Rock. From there we take the Bear Valley Trail back (a mostly paved road/trail).

Optional dinner after the hike, so bring some money.

Please note that the trip "leader" has not done this trip before, but the trails are well marked so that should not be a problem.

How to get to Pt. Reyes:
Take 280 or 101 north and cross Golden Gate Bridge.
Right after Marin City take Sir Francis Drake Blvd west (the signs will say San Anselmo, it's the exit after Lucky Drive). Eventually you end up at Hwy 1 in Olema. Turn right and then almost immediately take a left and follow the signs to the Park Headquarters and Visitor Center.

Oct. 26: Pinnacles Full MoonHike

  • Length of hike: 7-8 miles
  • Elevation gain: 1500 feet (moderately strenuous)
  • Start of hike: 2:00pm at the Bechtel Center, Stanford
This is an old Outing Club tradition: A hike in Pinnacles at night under the (almost) full moon! We meet at the Int'l Center at 2pm and carpool down to Pinnacles National Monument (south of Gilroy and Hollister).

We start at Chalone Creek picnic area and walk through the small "caves", before we head up to the high peaks. There we sit down and wait for the full moon to come out. Hopefully it will be a clear night and we can find our way down between the pinnacles in the moonlight. This time we will take the shorter route, returning to Chalone Creek on the High Peaks Trail (we will not go to the Bear Gulch Caves as we did last time).

IMPORTANT: Everybody must bring a (working) flashlight! The whole trip is only about 7-8 miles, but we will take it slowly in the moonlight so we will be back late at night (possibly after midnight). Note that we will have to go down some pretty steep steps in the "dark", so if you are uncomfortable with that then this hike is not for you.

Please bring liquid and food for a meal, and also some warm clothes to put on when it gets cold at night. And remember the flashlight and batteries!

This trip will be canceled if there is high likelihood of rain or even if it is very overcast (can't see the moon). The forecast is currently promising but the situation may change. If in doubt, please check your email on Friday night or Sat. morning.

Nov. 2: Mt. Diablo

  • Length of hike: 8-10 miles
  • Elevation gain: 1800 feet (moderately strenuous)
  • Start of hike: 9:00am at the Bechtel Center, Stanford
We will be hiking in the less crowded east side of the park. We will begin at the Regency Gate and do the Donner Canyon to Falls Trail to Mitchel Canyon "Giant Loop." Last week I hiked for several hours without running into any other people. If you would like to meet us at the park please contact me ( Osman ) for more details.

This hike gives a good sampling of what the park has to offer; open meadows, canyons, waterfalls ( if there is water! ), great views to the east and a few bits of fall color.

There will be no water anywhere along the hike so please make sure you bring enough. You should also bring a lunch.

This trip will be canceled if there is high likelihood of rain. The forecast is currently promising but the situation may change. If in doubt, please check your email on Friday night or Sat. morning. In any event, I will be at the Bechtel Center to say go or no go.

Nov. 9: Angel Island

Angel Island is an island in San Francisco Bay. The island has been used as a military installation, and also as the point of entry for many of the Chinese immigrants to California (the 'Ellis Island' of the west). However it's still undeveloped and has some nice hiking trails with fantastic views of the city and the bay. It's only a five mile hike around the entire island, so this should not be too strenuous.

So the plan is:

  • Meet at Bechtel Center at 8:30 AM on Saturday, 11/9
  • Drive to downtown San Francisco, and catch the 10:00 AM ferry from Pier 43 1/2 (near Fisherman's Wharf)
  • After a 20 minute ferry ride, explore Angel Island and find a nice place for a picnic lunch.
  • Return to SF on the 4:40 ferry. (An earlier ferry leaves at 3:00)

What to bring:

  • Lunch
  • $9.00 roundtrip fare for the ferry
  • Wind breaker/rain coat

Nov. 16: Portola State Park

  • Length of hike: ~13 miles
  • Elevation gain: approximately 1000 ft.
  • Meet: 8:30am at the Bechtel Center, Stanford
  • Driving time: less than 1hr (each way)

Join us for a visit to Portola State Park. The park is located in the Santa Cruz mountains near skyline.

Description from the Park Guide:
Portola is a natural stream basin of mixed evergreen forest, featuring old growth and second-growth redwoods. On sunnier hillsides the redwoods give way to hardwoods and shrubs. The dense understory is mostly buckleberry. Ferns and shade-tolerant plants are found along the creeks. The park also is home for a surprising variety of wildlife. Pescadero, Peters, and Slate creeks flow along fault lines in the earth where oil seepage and marine fossil deposits hint at the complex geologic history of the area.

We will start at the Park Office (elev 425ft). We will follow the Summit Trail up to an elevation of 1000ft. Then, we will continue on the Slate Trail (mostly flat) for about 2 miles. Then, we will head up the Bear Creek Trail that will take us to the highest elevation of our hike (1400 ft). We will go down to the Peters Creek loop (elev 700ft) where we will enjoy a "siesta" break. Finally, we will backtrack to the Park Office.

Nov. 23: Butano State Park

  • Length of hike: 11-13 miles
  • Elevation diff: approx. 1500ft
  • Meet: 8:30amDriving time: 70 min. (each way)
Butano State Park stretches almost from Big Basin to the Pacific Ocean. We will do a loop hike of 11-13 miles and quite a bit of up and downhill.
We'll start near the park entrance and go up the Jackson Flat trail. The trail will go through both redwood forest and later open areas with great views of the surrounding hills and canyons (and the ocean, if not foggy/cloudy). The return is down the Ano Nuevo trail which is quite steep with lots of switchbacks.
Bring a sweater or (rain) jacket since it can be chilly/windy near the coast even if it is nice and warm around the bay.

The drive to the park entrance is about 70 minutes. You can take HW84 over to HW1. Take a left on HW1 and then a left again on Pescadero. Now follow the signs to Butano park. You'll make a right again on Pescadero a little ways from the ocean.

NB: Because of recent rainfall the trails may be muddy. Hiking boots are recommended. If the forecast for Saturday is rainy, the hike will be cancelled!

Nov. 28-Dec 01 (Thanksgiving): possible 3-4 day trip to Death Valley and surroundings

We are compiling a list of people that would be interested in going to Death Valley over the Thanksgiving break. The plan would be to leave the Bay Area on Thursday the 28st, spend 29th and 30th in Death Valley and drive back on Sunday the 1st. If you are interested, plese send email to xxxx , when you reply please let him know if you are definitely coming or if it is a "maybe".

Update 11/18: This trip will most likely be cancelled.

Update 11/20: This trip has been cancelled

Dec. 8: S.F. City walk

We meet in Stanford at 9:00 am. We're going to discover the upper haight/Golden Gate park area in San Francisco. This walk will be an urban/natural experience :)

We will be parking our cars in Randall Museum. The Randall Museum is located at the end of Museum Way on Corona Heights. You can get there by following the signs on Castro Street at 14th Street which will take you up the hill to Museum Way. You can also take 17th Street up hill from from Market Street and turn right onto Roosevelt Way. This will take you to Museum Way. Check out the Randall Museum web page. From Randall Museum we will be walking to Buena Vista Park, walk around the park and then go down to Haight street. On Haight street, we will be visiting a psychedelic taqueria for some very interesting burritos to munch for lunch. Then we will make our way in the jungle of Haight to Golden Gate park. Ideally, it will be fun to walk all the way to beach but depending on time and energy we'll see how it goes. We'll then come back and on our way back home, stop at Twin Peaks for a great 360 view of the city.

Big Basin State Park

We meet at the international center 8:30am. This time we won't go to the waterfall loop!.

Stay tuned for more information about one week before the hike
