Sat Dec. 2: Purisima Creek
This is a 10+ year long tradition in the Outing Club. We actually did
this in April, but the weather was far from optimal so we decided
to try again. We drive down south past San Jose and Hollister to
Pinnacles Nat'l Monument (approx. 2 hrs drive). Note that we meet at
Stanford at 2pm because this is mainly a moonlight hike!
The hike is a loop through the so-called caves and up to the high peaks.
We'll have a break at the top and approximately at that time it
will get dark. If it is a clear night the full moon will light up the
whole area. The pinnacles are quite eerie at night!
IMPORTANT: Everybody *must* bring a flashlight (with batteries!).
If the weather doesn't cooperate it will be very dark!
Please bring liquid and food for a meal, and also warm clothes to put on
when it gets cold at night (it can be very cold in October).
On this hike there is a steep section with steps carved into the rock.
If you are uncomfortable with heights (possibly in the dark) this
hike is not for you!
Meet at 2pm at the Bechtel International Center (Stanford).
This trip is a first for the Outing Club. Rose Peak is located in the East
Bay,near Fremont. On a clear day there will be a great view from the top.
The hike is very long, about 20 miles round-trip!
Needless to say, the pace has to be higher than our usual leisurely
2 mph. So strong hikers only on this trip, please!
Bring a flashlight and lots of energy-rich food since this will be a long
day.
Meet: 8 am at Bechtel I-Center, Stanford
Distance: 20 miles
Elev. gain: 3000 feet
Come join us for this hike in the Forest of Nisene Marks State Park
near Santa Cruz. This is where the epicenter of the Loma Prieta
earthquake in 1989 was. The park has a nice mix of redwood forest and
more open vegetation (chapparel). Possibly we'll also see the remains of
a Chinese labor camp. This hike will be fairly short, about 8-10 miles.
Meet: 8 am at the Bechtel I-Center, Stanford
Driving time: 1 to 1.5 hours (each way)
Hiking dist. : 8-10 miles
Elev. gain: unknown, but not too much
Mt. Diablo is one of the highest peaks in the Bay Area with its 3849 feet.
Supposedly, on a clear day you can see more surface area from the
summit of Mt. Diablo than from any other place in the U.S.!
This time we will explore some trails on the north/west side
we have not tried before. We drive to Walnut Creek and take the North Gate
road. We start hiking near Camel Rock and follow the steep trail up
to Moses Rock Springs (I do not know if the water is drinkable, so please
bring enough liquid to do without). From there we continue up to
the overlook at Juniper Campground (3000 ft), which has a great view of
the Bay Area. From here, it is only about 1.5 miles and 800 feet
uphill to the summit. If somebody is exhausted, it will be possible to
skip the summit and shorten the hike by 2-3 miles. On the way down, we will
mostly follow fireroads.
Meet: 8 am at the Bechtel I-Center, Stanford
Driving time: ca. 1.5 hours each way
Hiking dist. : 12-13 miles
Elev. gain: 2800 feet
Come join us for this hike in El Corte de Madera Open Space Preserve.
This open preserve features heavily forested terrain, rare and fragile
sandstone formations, redwoods, and creek headwaters. We will start
at Skeggs Point in Skyline Boulevard (elev 2100 ft), visit the
sandstone formations, go down a redwood trail to an elevation of aprox
1100 ft; and then loop back to the parking lot.
Meet: 9 am at the Bechtel I-Center, Stanford
Driving time: ca. 40 min. each way
Hiking dist. : 10 miles
Elev. gain: 1000 feet
Clear your heads after the Big Game and join us for a visit to the hills
and beaches of the Marin Headlands, just north of the Golden Gate
Bridge. We will do a loop trip that includes Muir Beach and Tennessee
Beach. The terrain is hilly and open with great ocean vistas. We will pass
through a Zen center featuring an organic farm and a Buddhist bell. This
is one of our most popular hikes.
Meet: 8:10 am at the Bechtel I-Center, Stanford
Driving time: 1.5 - 2 hours each way
Hiking dist. : 10-12 miles
Elev. gain: twice a moderate elevation gain (hilly, but not steep)
Other: - There is a source of drinkable water near Muir Beach
- Some beach gear (fresbee, etc) may be useful.
- The optional San Francisco dinner will not feature the
(in)famous "Red Crane" restaurant!
This hike will go through the Purisma Creek and Hawkins Ridge area,
which is just south of Half Moon Bay. We have never been there before,
so it will be a bit exciting! According to our sources the hike will
go mainly through shady forest (redwood): "This Redwood trail journey
goes along Purisma Creek, passes herb gardens, and finally travels
along a slender finger of Harkins Ridge." The hike is fairly short, so
unless we get lost we should be back at Stanford between 5 and 6 pm.
Meet: *9* am at Bechtel I-Center, Stanford
Distance: 7-8 miles
Elev. gain: 1200 feet
