Craig's place in Escondido Village (directions below) to grill
some food, throw around a few frisbees, and hit a few volleyballs
until dark (715ish). We may then take the food next door to
the GCC (Graduate Community Center - directions below) to get
down to business and discuss this quarter's fall calendar.
This is an excuse
If you would like to lead a hike, or
some other activity, but can't come to the meeting, please send
Lauren and Maria your ideas by email (stanford.outing@gmail.com)
before the meeting at so that we can include it in the calendar
discussion. Though, you can continue to add items to the
calendar throughout the quarter as you think of them. Also,
please email us if you would like additional agenda items to be
considered for the meeting.
Even if you don't have plans
to lead an activity this quarter, please come to just have fun
and meet others. New prospective "members" are
welcome to come and learn about the group. For more
information, see our web pages at
http://www.stanford.edu/group/outing/
* Location: (6pm to 715 pm): Craig's Grill Site,

Nairobi Room of the GCC (upstairs) once it gets dark. Here
we will get down to business and try to fill the Fall Calendar.
Hope to see your happy faces Thursday, Lauren,
Maria, Craig

Caltrain Station on University Avenue
or:
10:36, San Francisco, 4th & Paul Caltrain Station *
Duration: we'll be back at Stanford for dinner * Total Length:
approx. 25 miles * Total elevation gain: approx. 1200 feet *

you're biking from Stanford's campus to the station, plan on
leaving 20 minutes early. We'll be biking reasonably fast,
since this is a long bike ride.

biking from the Caltrain last stop in San Francisco (4th and
Paul) to the Golden Gate Bridge, then we'll cross the bridge
(take your camera!), bike up the peak which is just north of

Angel Island (Jasim)
Length of hike: 6-8 mi
(easy) * Elevation change: 700 feet * Meet: 7:55 AM
at the Bechtel Center, Stanford * Driving time: approx. 1 hour
each way * Cost: $13.50 (for ferry). Plan also for carpool
cost and parking * Estimated return time: 6:30PM without
dinner * No need to RSVP.
I did this hike last fall
with Craig, and I am using his description. Thanks, Craig!!
This
first weekend of the quarter, we are offering a kind, gentle hike
in Angel Island. If you are really, really out of shape, this
should still only be a moderately taxing hike. Otherwise, it will
be a very relaxed day. Since there aren't many trails on Angel
Island, and because there's so many historic sites to visit,
we'll probably have a more leisurely day than the usual pure
hike, i.e.. lots of time for frisbee, lying in the sun, extended
siesta, historical poking around, etc. The views from Angel
Island can be spectacular if the weather cooperates, and the boat
ride should also be quite scenic. Bring a frisbee or other
leisure items if you like, definitely plan on packing a lunch and
plenty of water (2 liters/quarts). Maybe bring binoculars (and a
camera) if you have them.
Be prepared for San Francisco
type weather: the boat ride could be windy and chilly (even if
it's a 100 degrees in Stanford) and it could get quite warm in
the island.
The "official" Description: (from
the ferry company)
"A California State and Wildlife
Preserve, Angel Island is perhaps one of the finest historical
sites in the Bay Area, and includes military garrisons and
compounds from every major war, dating back to the U.S. Civil
War. Also known as the Ellis Island of the West, Angel Island's
immigration station was the first stop for millions of Pacific
Basin, Asian, and Russian immigrants entering the U.S. Travel
time to Angel Island is generally 40 minutes, depending on
intermediate stops."
Our description: We will
carpool to San Francisco and we will take the 9:45am Blue and
Gold Ferry in Pier 41 to Angel Island. On the Island, we will
take a paved perimeter road that is about 4-5 miles long. Then as
we get closer to the center of the island (which is higher up the
mountain), we will take a hiking trail that leads to the peak.
The view from the top is magnificent, if the weather is clear
(unfortunately, there is a not-so-low probability that it'll be
foggy). We should also have time to investigate the historical
sites, for those with any interest.
We will return in the
last ferry at 4:40pm. Optional dinner afterwards in San
Francisco.

Mt. Diablo Giant Loop (Ofir)
Length of hike: 14 miles Elevation
gain: 3400 feet (very strenuous) Park URL:
http://www.mdia.org/ Driving
time: approx 1:45 Optional dinner in the way home Meet:
7:30am at the Bechtel I-Center, Stanford.
Please note that
this is a very strenuous, both in elevation gain and length.
For
this hike, we will start on the north side of Mt. Diablo at the
end of Mitchell Canyon Road near the town of Clayton. We will
follow the unpaved part of Mitchell Canyon Road to Deer Flat, Deer
Flat to Juniper Campground, and Juniper Trail to the Lower Summit
Parking Lot. The summit itself is inside the Visitor Center
rotunda, a short distance uphill. Return from the Lower Parking
Lot along the SUmmit Trail to Devils Elbow, then to Prospectors
Gap via North Peak Trail to the Coulter Pine Trail at the base of
the mountain, and back to the trail head. The loop is 14.0 miles
long and the total climb is 3400 feet.
This is the
definitive Mt. Diablo hike - the total mountain experience. It
emcompasses all of the park's life zones, from meadowlands to
rocky summit, and the ever-changing views are simply stunning. A
major portion of the loop consists of intimate single-track trils,
in close encounter with the wilderness (including some unwelcome
plants like poison oak for which we should keep a cautious
eye).
This is a challenging hike, wich some astoundingly
steep stretches, but the result is exhilararing. Remember that
this trip contains a lot of hill climbing so it will be a real
workout! Expect the full hike to take 9 hours (excluding driving).
This area can be very hot on a sunny day so bring lots of water
(at least 2 liter/quarts) and perhaps a hat. If you have a
Mt.Diablo map, please bring it.

Ice Skating in Palo Alto (Ken C.)
Date: Oct 8 (Sat) Time:
8pm Cost: $7 for ice skating ticket, $3 for optional shoe
rental, carpooling mileage expense, and optional dinner
cost. RSVP: No need to RSVP for ice skating. RSVP only if you
want to join us for dinner.
Official ice skating rink
web site: http://www.winterlodge.com/
Description: I
thought I would start throwing in something cold for those who
are from the east coast and start missing the change of the
season by now. Besides, it will be a fun warm-up before winter
comes. So either you are a beginner like me or a pro, please
come join us for this ice skating event.
Plan: We
will start ice skating at 8pm, but I figure that some people like
me may need to be fed before we do exercise, or have the energy
to get up again and again after falling on the ice too many
timesJ. Hence, there is an optional dinner gathering in down
town Palo Alto before ice skating. If you live on campus and
don't have a car, we can also arrange carpooling after the
dinner. If you decide to go straight to the ice skating rink
(3009 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto, CA 94306), we will meet you
in front of the shoe rental section at 8pm.
If you
are interested in having dinner beforehand, please RSVP
by Thursday night (10/6), 8pm (due to the logistics reason, we
will only take dinner RSVP before 8:01pmJ) so that I know which
restaurant to choose, since I don't know how many people to
expect from this mailing list. And we certainly don't want to
overcrowd a 10~20 seat restaurant when we have 30 people show
up. Once I receive the RSVP from you, I will send you an email
on Friday for the exact address to meet for dinner. The only
thing I can tell you now is that the dinner will be around 6pm
and the restaurant will be in downtown Palo Alto.

SF Fleet Week (TK)
* Date: Oct 8 (Sat) *
Destination: Angel Island * Meeting time : 7:40AM at Bechtel,
or at 9:45AM on the ferry. * Length of Hike : ~5 miles (easy
to moderate) * Driving Time : ~1 hour each way * Return :
6PM * Cost : $13.50 for ferry + ~$7 for carpool * Cancels:
in case of rain or large earthquake
Every year, the US Navy brings a
spectacular show to SF Bay (
http://fleetweek.us/fleetweek ). This year, Blue Angels will
return after being absent last year. The show will also include
Team Oracle, F16 Demo Team and Red Bull Air Race World Series
Finale (
http://www.redbullairrace.com/ ), as well as assorted US Navy
ships parading in the Bay. SF Fleet Week has been described as one
of the best in the country, and one to see at least once in your
life according to some previous attendees.
Angel Island is probably one of
the best places to view the spectacle away from the maddending
crowd and traffic as it offers unobstructed 360 degree view of the
Bay. So, if you missed last week's trip to the Island, this is
your chance to redeem yourself and watch the show as a bonus.
We'll meet at Betchel center at
7:40 AM and carpool to SF. We'll leave our cars at Fort Mason for
free parking, hike a short distance to Pier 41 and catch the first
ferry to the Island at 9:45AM. Then we'll charge up the hill at
full speed and conquer the best table in the house where we will
enjoy the parade of Navy ships while having a picnic lunch. In the
afternoon, we'll hike around the Parameter Road and settle down in
Quarry Beach to watch the airshow and the air race.
Please bring your favorite wine
and cheese, binocular, beach blanket, and some warm clothes as it
could get cold during the ferry ride.
Fleet Week description from
http://onlysf.sfvisitor.org/cityevents/fleetweek/:
Inaugurated in 1981 this annual
event brings together U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard
forces for a week-long celebration on the water and in the skies.
The Blue Angels are scheduled to
perform at approximately 2 pm each day, weather permitting. The
weekend lineup will also include the Patriots jet demonstration
team, the U.S. Coast Guard Helicopter, F-16/F-86s plus Sean
Tucker, one of the country's finest civilian aerobatic pilots.
The Red Bull Air Race World Series
features several world-class aerobatic pilots, individually
navigating a course of inflatable pylons, performing specified
aerobatic maneuvers, in a race against the clock, and, ultimately,
the other competitors. The series has viewers holding their breath
as the innovative race brings the action just 500 feet from
spectators.
Fleet Week 2005 will also feature
a flotilla of naval vessels in the annual parade of ships.
Angel Island description from
http://www.angelisland.org:
Angel Island is a hilly, grass and
forest-covered island, the largest in San Francisco Bay. It is
located one mile from the Tiburon Peninsula. The park covers 740
acres and is 788 feet high at the top of Mt. Livermore. It
provides spectacular views of Marin County, San Francisco, and the
Golden Gate, as well as more distant views of the entire Bay Area.
In addition, it is rich in historical significance.

Eastern Sierras Fall Colors
Camping/ Hot Springs (Craig)
Depart: Leave Friday
afternoon/evening and camp at Silver Lake Return: Sunday
evening Distance: 5-12 miles day 1, 3.4 miles day 2 Elevation
Change: 1300-2600' day 1, 1500' day 2 Cost: Mileage + $13 per
campsite per night + $20 per vehicle to drive across 120 w/o a
parks pass + Friday and Sunday dinner Maximum Group Size: 12
Web: http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/inyo/
What to bring: Layers and warm sleeping stuff (expect it
to get down to freezing at night), swimsuit, towel, sandals for
wading in hot springs, food for 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, and
something for Saturday dinner. And, of course, the usual
hiking/camping gear.
I tried to run this trip last year,
but it got snowed out. This year we're doing it earlier and it
sounds like we'll hit the colors well, barring a windstorm.
I
intend for this to be a fairly relaxed trip. Friday night we
will drive up to the campsite, stopping for dinner on the way.
Since there are no reservations, I'd like to have at least some
people leave earlier on Friday. Those that do might get a
chance to do some early hotspring exploration.
Saturday
morning, we will get up and hike into the Ansel Adams Wilderness
at Agnew and Gem Lake. Those who have proper fishing licenses
and equipment may want to fish here (the trout fishing
is apparently great). Other may walk around the lake or just
relax. When we return, we will cook a large group dinner. Time
permitting, we may drive to one of the hot springs.
Sunday,
we will pack up, take a short hike in the morning to Fern
Lake, and then stop by some of the local hot springs before
heading home.
Some of the roads to the hot springs may be
a little bumpy, so preference will be given those who are
willing to drive and have decent ground clearance (4WD will not
be necessary), as well as trip leaders who respond by 8 pm
Friday. Those who made the trip will be informed by Saturday
morning.
If you're interested, send an email to Craig with
the following information:
* Name: * Are you
willing to drive? * If yes, how many people can your car fit
with gear? * Do you have: A tent (number of people)? A
stove? A National Parks Pass? * Have you lead an Outing
Club trip in the past year? * From where would you prefer to
leave? *When would you prefer to leave? *When is the
earliest you can leave?
Please send in your replies and/or
questions to Craig Foster, cfoster01(at) yahoo (dot) com.

Sespe Wilderness and Hot Springs
Backpacking (David A.)
Dates: Fri Oct 14 (9:00am)-
Sun Oct 16 (late night) * Hiking Distance: 6 miles each way *
Elevation Change: ~2000ft (decrease from trail head) * Driving
distance: ~300miles (41/2 - 5 hours) each way * Departure
time: 9:00am * Cost: Mileage reimbursement to drivers.
The
Sespe wilderness is a rugged beautiful natural area of steep
mountains, deep canyons and very interesting geology, with some
of the hottest natural springs in America. Martin and Steve, who
lead this trip last year, raved about the scenery of this
place.
At the Sespe hot springs the water emerges from the
ground at 194degF (90degC) and mixes with the cool water of Sespe
creek to produce some very comfortable warm and hot water pools.
We will set up camp by these pools for two nights.
* The
plan:
We meet Friday morning and depart at 9:00am. Drive
from the bay area to the trail head (near of Frazier Park, CA)
keeping in contact by using cell phones and two-way radios.
Reaching the trail head in the early afternoon, we then backpack
the 6 miles (with a 2000 ft elevation loss) to camp. We setup
camp by the hot springs for the night. Have a late dinner and
then enjoy the hot springs under the stars and almost full
moon.
Saturday there will be the option of doing some
additional hiking (possibly to Willet hot springs or to some
canyons) or just relaxing and hanging out around camp.
Sunday
we backpack out the 6 mile trail (2000 ft elevation gain this
time) and drive back to the bay area. We won't rush on the way
out, so don't expect to be in the bay area until late Sunday.

This hike, with its starting trailhead only about
25 miles from Stanford, is described as "one of the most

the ridge that Skyline Blvd follows for 34 miles through ancient
redwoods and past many beautiful waterfalls before emerging at
the Pacific coast.
* The plan: We meet Friday afternoon

Description: The walk along the north shore of San Francisco
from Fort Mason to the Golden Gate Bridge is arguably one of the
most beautiful urban hikes in the U.S. if not the world.
Spectacular views of San Francisco Bay, the Marin Headlands, the
city of San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge, or the Pacific
Ocean are evident at almost every turn as one walks along the
shore of San Francisco Bay.
We will begin our hike at Fort
Mason and head westward along the Marina Green and Crissy Field
during our approach to the Golden Gate Bridge. Our hike will then
take us over the Golden Gate Bridge and provide us with a unique
opportunity to walk under the northern section of the deck of the
bridge as we head to the Marin Headlands. In the Marin Headlands,
we will be on sections of the Coastal Trail and the Morning Sun
Trail. We will then head down from the headlands into downtown
Sausalito on quiet streets through quaint neighborhoods.
In
downtown Sausalito, we will briefly explore and possibly stop for
a snack/ drink. The Sausalito-San Francisco ferry will then
transport us back to the Ferry Building at the foot of Market
Street in San Francisco, allowing us to survey the route of our
walk and enjoy great views as we cruise through the Bay. From the
Ferry Building, we will take public transit part way back to Fort
Mason and then take a short walk back to our starting point.
*
DIRECTIONS to Fort Mason from Stanford : - Take the I-280
NORTH ramp towards SAN FRANCISCO - Take 19th AVENUE EXIT from
I-280 in SF (only possibility is northward) - Stay on 19th
AVENUE going north - When you reach Golden Gate Park, 19th
AVENUE transitions to PARK-PRESIDIO AVENUE (to make sure you make
this transition correctly, get in the rightmost lane after you
arrive at Golden Gate Park) - Continue northward on
PARK-PRESIDIO - After passing through a tunnel, watch out for
the DOWNTOWN/ MARINA BLVD. EXIT, which you should take
(first exit after tunnel) - You will then be on Doyle Drive.
Go to the leftmost lane and take the MARINA BLVD. EXIT, which
will put you on MARINA BLVD heading EAST. - Continue down
MARINA BLVD. until you reach the stoplight at BUCHANAN STREET
(there will be a Safeway grocery store somewhat in front of you
and to your right at this intersection) where you should turn
left. - You are now near the entrance to FORT MASON. Look for
a parking space here or drive through the gates marked by the
tan/white gatehouses and find a parking space. - We will meet
immediately in front of the main entrance to Green's restaurant
but across the street from this entrance. Green's is in the first
long building at Fort Mason.

This is not a very strenuous hike. The climb
is gradual. It offers an excellent chance for relative beginners
who want to stretch themselves just that bit more. I expect it
will take us 2.5 hours to complete the loop. Make sure you bring
layers with you since it can be quite cold at the trail. However
hot the day maybe in South Bay, do not forget to bring warm
clothes.
We will park our cars at the trailhead in San
Bruno where Sneath Lane ends. There is no parking charge. We
will proceed on city streets for about a mile towards Skyline
College. Then we start the climb on Sweeney Ridge trail
towards the NIKE missile tracking station, a relic of cold war
years. The hike descends along San Andreas Lake to our cars at
the trailhead. I have hiked the route before in the evenings when
the fog was so thick that there was no chance of having a view
of the lake. I even doubt whether the lake can be seen from
the trail at all; we shall check for ourselves.
More
details about the trail :
http://www.bahiker.com/southbayhikes/sweeney.html
"Sweeney Ridge is a quick drive from San Francisco, and the
payback for climbing to the ridge is a good one: incomparable
views of Montara Mountain, the Pacific Ocean, and the San
Francisco Watershed, including San Andreas Lake."
There
are no restrooms at the trailhead but there is a porta-potty near
the NIKE site at the halfway mark where our climbing ends. No
lunch break is planned but we will take a 5-10 minute break at
the halfway point to allow hungry hikers to munch a sandwich or a
cookie. Every carpool can think about an optional lunch after the
hike in San Bruno or Millbrae.

elevation change (East Side) * MEET: Stanford (Bechtel

wind-breaker, etc. --the usual * DRIVING TIME/MILEAGE: ~35
miles- 60 minutes * Parking is $6.00 per car + gas
*
Description: Head out to Santa Cruz's finest park right at the
beach. There are actually 2 sides of wilder ranch, on either side
of hwy1. We can park on the seaside (west), where there are lots
of cliffs. then there is a small trail & then small tunnel
which goes beneath hwy1 to the other side (east). then the bigger
trail starts, through bushes, trees, fields, etc. It is suppose
to be very beautiful. After we r done with the trail, then we can
come back to the west side & then visit the cliffs. Don't
know where the festival is going to be, mostly in the sea
side.
Easy hike, it might be ~4 hrs. i don't think there
are that many trails there. mostly 1 main .... others deviate &
keep joining it back.
In case we get late for the
festival, we can finish the 1st part of the hike (on the east
side), & then go to the festival, have all the clam chowder,
& then come back to visit the cliffs.
Cliffs are less
of a hike & more of a scenic view thing - magnificent rocks &
hugh waves hitting against them. there are seals also on the
surface sometimes.
Bring some water and a snack for the
hike. Only bring lunch if you don't like clam chowder! We will
spend some time at this festival too

Description: We will do the Matt Davis-Steep Ravine Loop (I
have done it once before). It's one of the most scenic hikes I
have done. Though the elevation gain may look a bit more, it's
mostly gradual and there are lot of flat stretches. Also, I plan
to throw in a small loop hike to the top of Mount Tamalpais from
the Pantoll ranger station (from Pantoll it's mostly downhill on
the original Matt Davis-Steep Ravine Loop so the peak loop won't
hurt us much). If you are not keen on the hike to the top feel
free rest for a while at Pantoll till the others return
back.

Windy Hill Open Space (Maria &

*Driving time: approx. 30 minutes each way *Length of Hike:
8 miles *Total Elevation gain: 1000 ft *Park URL:
http://www.openspace.org/preserves/pr_windy_hill.asp
*Rain Policy:
Weather forecast is for no rain. Hike will occur even if we
have light showers. *Meet: 10 am at the Becthel International
Center, Stanford
Windy Hill is named for the prominent,
grass-covered 1900-foot hilltop which forms the scenic backdrop to
the Town of Portola Valley. Located adjacent to Skyline Boulevard,
the 1,130-acre preserve is characterized by grassland ridges and
lush wooded ravines with serene creeks. The upper ridges have very
good views of San Francisco, the Pacific Ocean, the valley, and
the bay (if it's not foggy).
We will hike the Windy Hill
Loop. This loop uses Hamms Gulch Trail, Eagle Trail,
Razorback Ridge Trail and Lost Trail to make the eight-mile loop
from the top of Skyline down forested ridges to the valley
floor and back again.
This will be an easy hike and we are
starting late (10 am), so if you haven't been in a hike this year,
this is a good one to start with. We will probably be back
at Stanford by 3:30pm.
This was my first hike at Stanford
two years ago. It was beautiful, and I've met several people who
became my very close friends. So I am leading this hike to
have another special day as I did two years ago. There, I met the
most magical guy (Erik) and he is now my fiance.

Don't park in the school parking lot in front of the restrooms.
Meet near the restrooms.
I wasn't planning to do any more
evening walks this month, but this being the last week of
daylight saving, I realise that walks at Stevens Creek trail
won't be feasible after it. Stanford Campus is a more
suitable location for evening walks but is just that bit further
for me to drive to for a short walk. So here's one last evening
walk for the year at Stevens Creek Trail. Next month onwards,
evening walks will have to be on city streets only.
We
will cross Whisman Park at 6 PM, hit the Stevens Creek Trail and
then proceed towards the bay this time. We will try to keep to
the trail for as long as we can and then take to city streets for
some time. Bring flashlight if you can.

After
depressing views of Wilder Ranch, it's time to see something
breathtaking. For this time of season may be "Point Lobos"
will be appropriate choice.
Point Lobos is located on HW1
in a beautiful Pacific coast setting near Carmel south of
Monterey. Deriving its name from the offshore rocks at Punta de
los Lobos Marinos, Point of the Sea Wolves, where the sound of
the sea lions carries inland, the reserve has often been called
"the crown jewel of the State Park System." We will do
a short hike with not much climbing (8 miles approximately). For
more information about the park see
http://pt-lobos.parks.state.ca.us.
Bring
warm clothing for wind and possible rain. Also, bring food
(lunch) and drink. Meet at I-center at 9 am. If we finish early,
there are a number of options - Visit Monterey, Mission Carmel

please email them.
Lake Chabot (pronounced Shu_bO) is in
Castro Valley, to the north of Fremont and Hayward. It's not a
favourite spot with hardy hikers, perhaps because the walk is
rather easy and the elevation change is not much. Still, 9 miles
take some walking; please be sure that you can walk for 3 hours.
It's a nice place for beginners to extend themselves. We will
start the walk at 8:00 AM and be back at the trailhead around
11:00 AM. We will try to complete the loop without stops, and at
moderate pace; at most we may take a 5 minute break for beginner
hikers.
Trail Directions
We will meet between
Marina (the snacks bar) and restrooms.
Map :
http://www.ebparks.org/resources/pdf/trails/lake_chabot_detail.pdf
From the Marina (trailhead near the snacks bar),
start out on the East Shore Trail for 1.7 mi until the end of the
pavement. Keep going straight on the dirt trail a short distance,
then turn left onto a skinny wooden bridge. Past the bridge, turn
left at the fork onto Honker Bay Trail. Honker Bay follows the
lake shore for about 1.5 miles, eventually ascending from the
shoreline. At the top of the hill climb, turn left onto
Columbine. This single-track trail winds its way down for 2.2
miles to a creek bed, where you turn left again to head towards
Bass Cove. Go straight on Bass Cove for 1.8 miles towards the
dam. After crossing the dam, the trail becomes West Shore, which
leads over 1.8 miles back to the Marina.
Self organised
carpool at Bechtel I-Center at 7:00 AM. Driving Time : 50 min. If
anyone is willing to volunteer to organise carpool there, please
email me soon. From the campus, go towards 101, take 84 and join
880-North. Maps on the internet may show a longer route. Use the
directions given below from 880-N. 1. From 880-N, take CA-92
exit to thr right, go 0.7 miles. 2. Continue on JACKSON ST -
go 1.4 mi 3. Bear left on FOOTHILL BLVD - go 1.6 mi ===>
Go towards 580 but avoid getting on that freeway. Stay in the
right lane, go slow, prepared to turn onto Castro Valley Blvd. 4.
Turn right on CASTRO VALLEY BLVD - go 0.8 mi 5. Turn left on
LAKE CHABOT RD - go 1.6 mi
==> Anybody coming from San
Leandro side (880-S), should take Hesperian Blvd exit.
Parking
in the main lot costs about $5, but we will park for free on the
road and then walk towards the snacks bar near the main parking
lot.
The second carpool location is near the Safeway,
at 46848 Mission Blvd, Fremont, CA 94539. From 880-N, turn right
on Mission Blvd. (Skip one unmarked road which goes to the right
soon after the exit.) Go 0.7 miles. Safeway is on your right.
Meet there at 7:15 AM. Driving Time : 35 minutes. We will take
880-N and follow directions given above to Lake Chabot.

Sykes Hot Springs Backpacking

each way * Elevation Gain: ~2500 feet each way
* Meet: 7am on Nov. 12 (Saturday) at the Bechtel I-Center
* Driving time: approx. 2 hours each way * Limit:
8 people
The Sykes Hot Springs are situated in Big Sur,
the beautiful and wild coastal range south of Monterey. We will
hike in along the Big Sur river. The goal is to find (and enjoy)
the hot springs at what is hopefully a time when they are not too
heavily mobbed. We will spend a night near the hot springs by a
campfire before we head back the next morning. We should be back
in the Bay Area by early Sunday evening.
You'll need the
standard overnight gear: backpack, sleeping bag and pad, warm
clothes, food... we will also need some tents, stoves and water
filters.

where we will stop for lunch. This is a beautiful hike in autumn,
but the weather may be cold at this time of year, so please be
sure to dress appropriately.

Havasu
Canyon is a branch of the Grand Canyon. It is a beautiful area
with fascinating rock formations and spectacular waterfalls. This
trip will focus mainly on the water, with day hikes to the three
waterfalls and an excursion to the mouth of the canyon, where the
Havasu river empties into the Colorado.
We will be driving
Thursday (almost full day) for arriving there and Sunday full day
for coming back. We will be splitting all our activities in Friday
and Saturday. http://www.havasupaitribe.com/hiking.html
We would prefer to see these waterfalls with one big
hike + small hikes.
For Campground please check this
official
link. ---------------------------------------------- http://www.havasupaitribe.com/campgrounds.html The
campgrounds provide pit toilets and potable water as well as
tables, but nothing else. Campfires are not allowed. You must pack
out all trash. There is no water at Hualapai hilltop (the trail
head), so have full canteens for the hike in. There will be no
water until Supai Village, about 8 miles in. There are apparently
a couple of overpriced, understocked "general stores" in
Supai village, but don't count on them for anything crucial.

Mount Tamalpais, off Stinson
Beach (DN)
Destination : Mount
Tamalpais, Stinson Beach. * Date : Nov 24 (Thursday) *
Length of hike : 7-8 miles * Elevation gain : 1600 feet *
Difficulty : Moderate, but not for beginners. * Rain Policy :
Heavy Rain Cancels. * Meet : 8:25 AM, sharp, self-organised
carpool at Bechtel I-Center. Or meet at
trailhead, on Belvedere Avenue, at 10:00 AM sharp. * Bring :
lunch, water, layers. * Organizer : DN (email : walks.nani
[at] gmail-dot-com) * No RSVP. If you have quesions please
email them.
We will do the popular loop at Mount
Tamalpais, combining Matt Davis off Stinson Beach, Steep Ravine
and Dipsea trails. The climb up Matt Davis is on a very gradual
slope which makes it feel more like 1200 feet, and I plan to do
it at an easy to moderate pace, but this hike is not recommended
for beginners. We will take a break for lunch at 4-mile mark near
Pantoll Parking lot.
* For more information, including
directions
: http://www.bahiker.com/northbayhikes/stinson.html
It's
a long drive from the campus to the trailhead. If you plan for a
restroom break at the carpool point, be there at 8:20 AM but
don't delay others because of your tardiness. I will try to be at
carpool point myself but I am not sure from where I would be
starting that morning. It should be possible to take a break for
fueling, perhaps on 19th Ave in SF, where you can find a restroom
and pick up a sandwich at a gas station, and reach the trailhead
in 90 minutes.
To reach US 101 in Marin County, start
northwards on Lomita on the campus, turn left on Santa Teresa,
right on Campus Dr West, left on Stock Farm Rd, left on Sand Hill
Rd, then take 280-N and go 26 miles. Go past CA-1 South exit,
take 1-N to 19th Ave, and follow directions to Golden Gate Bridge
via CA-1 N and 101-N. When you exit 101 to CA-1N for Stinson
Beach, note your odometer reading. About 3.5 miles from here, you
need to turn right on Panoramic Hwy at a junction not very
clearly signed as you approach it. If you continue on Shoreline
Hwy (CA-1) instead, you will still approach the trailhead, but
off a more winding road.
I plan to start climbing Mt Tam
at 10 AM but if alternate parking space needs to be found a
little away from the trailhead, we will start at 10:15 AM.
If
we are back at the trailhead by 2 PM, I might drive towards East
Peak trailhead and walk another mile. Check

(Sunday) * Length of hike : 5-6 miles * Elevation gain :
200-400 feet * Difficulty : Very easy at moderate pace. *
Rain Policy : Heavy Rain Cancels. * Meet : 9:25 AM, sharp, at
Bechtel I-Centre. We will start at 9:30. Or meet
at Windy Hill trailhead, off Portola Road, at 9:45. * Bring :
snacks, water, layers. * Organizer : DN (email : walks.nani

email them.
This is a good hike for beginners looking for
easy workout. We will start from the Windy Hill trailhead off
Portola Road on Spring Ridge Trail or Betsy Crowder Trail, and
soon exit Windy Hill OSP near gate WH06. After crossing Alpine
Road, we will take Toyon Trail to Lake Trail in Coal Mine Ridge,
sometimes called Portola Valley Ranch. Once we reach Old Spanish
Trail, we will stop for lunch. There is the option of taking
Arroyo Trail if we want to walk more. We will re-enter Windy Hill
at gate WH06, and round off the hike along Spring Ridge Trail or
Sequoias Trail.

Description: On our first stop, we'll be visiting the
University of California Botanical Garden. The University
of California Botanical Garden is a living museum open to the
public featuring one of the most diverse plant collections in the
United States. Established in 1890, the Garden's 34 acres contain
over 12,000 different kinds of plants from all over the world
arranged by region. The Garden, famous for its large number
of rare and endangered species, is located on the UC Berkeley
campus in Strawberry Canyon, on Centennial Drive between the Cal
Memorial Stadium and the Lawrence Hall of Science, overlooking
San Francisco Bay.
With paid admission($5/person), there
is a free docent-led tours offered year-round on Thursdays,
Saturdays and Sundays at 1:30 PM. We'll try to catch the
1:30pm tour. It lasts about 1 hour. Afterwards, we'll
explore the garden on our own for about 1 hr and meet back @ the
entrance @ 3:30 to depart to our next destination, the chocolate
factory.
Before our factory tour, we'll first stop at the
lovely Cafe Cacao, where we can take a break and have some sweet
treats before the tour. It's located right next to the
factory. We can relax there until our tour which begins @
4:30pm. Here is a little more info about the cafe,
http://www.cafecacao.biz.
Our tour will last about 45 minutes to 1 hr. During
which, you will get a little history about where cocoa beans are
harvested, how they are processed into chocolate from the cocoa
plant, and most importantly, sample some of the different types
of chocolates. Feel free to ask questions during the tour
as it's very much encouraged!
After tour, people still
have a chance go back to the store and get some sweet treasures
to bring home. That will conclude our day of
tours.

Some
come and join the rest of your friends to take over a cable car,

(Yep,

We
will group together at "Shalimar" at 532 Jones Street @

is a tasty, inexpensive, and fresh Indian restaraunt that is quite
popular.
After grabbing a quick short meal, we will take

our merry times together all along the line. We will stop off
at Ghirardelli Square, enjoy a tasty treat together, and then head
back to Union Square.
Feel free to invite others along!

something special, please do make some copies.

walks.nani [at] gmail-dot-com) * No RSVP. If you have
questions please email them.
I try to start my hikes on
time and usually succeed. So don't be late. We have had occasions
when hikers had to leave midway because of physical discomfort.
So do your homework, print out driving directions and the trip's
map, and make a note of the proposed trails.
We will start
from the northern-most parking lot off Stevens Canyon Road. We
will take Tony Look trail for 0.6 very steep miles and turn left
on Coyote Ridge trail into the eponymous Fremont Older OSP. (Mr
Fremont Older, a newspaper editor, owned a part of this preserve
100 years ago.) We may stop for 10 minutes at Maisie's Peak to
admire views and eat a sandwich. We will get back into the county
park (owned by Santa Clara County) on Vista Loop trail and rejoin
Tony Look trail at its peak point. I think the climb is fairly
gradual after first 15 strenuous minutes. Tony Look trail winds
downhill along the eastern edge of Stevens Creek Reservoir on a
shaded route. We will complete the loop by taking Rim Trail.

From

6.8 miles. Take Foothill Blvd exit, turn right, travel approx 2.3
miles from Hwy 280 and turn into a clearly marked park entrance
to your left. Foothill Blvd changes its name to Stevens Canyon
Road after approx 1.4 miles. If you hit Monte Bello Rd, you have
gone too far.
For Cupertino Carpool Point, get on Foothill

Monument Trail, this route can be rated as moderately
strenuous and makes a good hike for someone who is
physically fit but who has not been hiking much recently.
For this trip, we will adopt a moderate pace to appreciate the
scenery and highlights along the loop.
Highlights of our
route include a visit to the Henry Coe Monument, a visit to
Frog Lake, a lovely crossing of the Little Fork of the Coyote
Creek, and huge Manzanita Shrubs that have reached tree-like
sizes.

How to get there : Check for
"skyline blvd & tunitas creek rd, redwood city, ca"

la honda , woodside, ca".
From San Francisco side,
take Interstate 280 to the exit for CA 92. Drive west about 3
miles, then turn left onto Skyline Boulevard (CA 35). Drive about
7 miles to the parking lot on the right side of the road (it is
the last Purisima parking lot).
From Stanford Campus, take
Sand Hill Rd, turn right on Portola Rd, make a sharp left for
CA-84 (La Honda Rd), then bear right on Skyline Blvd (CA-35) and
drive north about 6 miles, to the small parking lot on the left
side of the road (it's easy to miss, so be careful and smart by
using odometer readings).

I
am going to cross-post the hike on BayAreaHiking Yahoo-group;
please visit the group at 7 AM on the day of the hike to check
whether the weather has forced the hike to be cancelled. I will
also try to email those who have rsvp-ed if the hike is
cancelled. Please rsvp to my walks.nani address only and use the
same subject header as sent out with this email to help me manage
it smoothly.
How to get there : From Stanford Campus, take
Sand Hill Rd, then 280-N, then CA-92 towards the ocean. Drive
south for 1.2 miles on CA-1 and follow the directions given on
the webpage above. Check for "higgins purisima rd, half moon
bay, ca" on maps.google.com
site for a quick reference. Imp Note : Higgins Purisima Road
is also known as Higgins Canyon Road.

Arastradero Preserve (DN)

200-500 ft * Difficulty : Very easy. * Rain Policy : Rain

Arastradero
Preserve is almost walking distance from Stanford Campus. The
trails are very easy; there are no tough climbs to negotiate. We
will walk for about 2 hours, rain permitting. The whole weekend
is liable to be washed out by rains but it's still 8-10 days
away, so the forecast for rain has ample time to change for the
better.

Elevation gain : 400-500 ft * Difficulty : Very easy. *

Edgewood Park's trails are very friendly to
beginner hikers. We will go where our fancy takes us and walk for
2-3 hours. The map I have access to does not mention distances. I
have walked there once before and only remember that the walk was
short, the gradient very gentle and the views were quite
good.
For more information and map, google-search for
'edgewood park bahiker'. Take 280-N from San Jose side, turn
right (eastwards) at Edgewood Road exit, and drive about a mile.
The main gate of the park and a parking lot can be seen to your
right. Those wishing to come straight to the park should note
that the walk will begin sometime between 10:20 to 10:30
AM.

I have never
visited this park before. I hope someone familiar with the park
will attend the hike; we will let him/her lead the hike, choose
any path covering 7-8 miles, but choose the pace ourselves and
keep it moderate.
Check :
http://www.bahiker.com/southbayhikes/almadenquicksilver.html A
reference point for finding driving directions is : "Almaden
Rd & Mockingbird Hill Ln, San Jose, CA 95120". More
exact directions can be found in the URL above.
My plan is
to follow the route described in the URL. The walk will start at
10:45 AM; we should be back at the trailhead by 2:30 PM.

gain : Very little * Difficulty : Very easy * Rain Policy :
Rain Cancels. * Meet : Bechtel I-Center at 9:50 AM * Bring

We will park our cars near the intersection of
Alpine Rd and Willowbrook Dr in Portola Valley. But parking space
is very limited, so please carpool from the campus. We will reach
the pond at the farthest end of the hike either via Old Spanish
Trail or via Alpine Rd on foot for 2 miles and Lake Trail. The
return would be along Toyon Trail. We should be done by 12:15 PM
and back on the campus by 12:30 PM. We also have the option of
extending the hike by a mile or two by walking a few extra trails
in Coal Mine Ridge or in Windy Hill
OSP.
