Projects at the Opportunity Center
33 Encina Avenue, Palo Alto
You decide how many hours and which days of the week to commit.
Tutoring | Kids: 3-6P M-F, Teenagers: 5-6P M-F
Work with children (kindergarden to 5th grade) who have previously been homeless but are currently living in low income housing units. Help with homework and keep them company. Provide mentorship for teenagers. More help is needed T Th. Breakdown: 3-3:30P (snack time), 3:30-4:40P (homework), 4:40-6P (play time). On Wednesdays, snack time begins at 2P and play time lasts an hour longer.
Clothing Closet | 11A-3P T and W
Help sort clothes and serve those who choose the clothes. Duties include registering clients, helping clients select clothing and provisions, keeping track of clothing disbursements, receiving and sorting donations, and restocking the closet. Tuesdays are primarily for sorting clothes; Wednesdays for serving those who choose the clothes.
Kitchen | 8-11A M-F
Help out at the kitchen. The kitchen receives donated food from companies such as Whole Foods and Dominoes. Serve and clean up after.
Outreach | 10-4P M-F
Build relationships with clients, understand their needs and, if needed, communicate needs to the Opportunity Center case managers. Training provided by the Opportunity Center.
Walks
Teams walk once every week (alternating Friday nights and Saturday mornings) in groups or pairs to talk with the homeless and distribute supplies. Meet at 8P and 11A at the Haas Center for Public Service. Walks last about two hours. Members are strongly encouraged to come consistently to build stronger relationships with the community we serve.
San Francisco Tenderloin Weekend Retreat
A weekend retreat to Tenderloin District in San Francisco. We interact with the homeless, help out at a soup kitchen and bond with fellow Stanford students. Once a quarter.
Clothing Drive
End of each quarter
Holiday Toy Shop
Toys distributed to local needy families. December 15th-19th 10A-6P T to Th. Volunteers will work at gift wrapping stations, help at the family shop, ensure families are getting the correct amount of toys, and check registration documents at entrance.
