Stanford Newtype presents its second movie (1993) in its 15-Year Anniversary Movie Series.

What: “Sailor Moon R: Promise of the Rose”
When: Saturday, February 3, 2:00 - 4:00 PM
Where: Asian American Activities Center (directions)
Why: A chance to see one of anime films that has highly influenced the perception of anime in America or a chance to re-watch an old favorite. Also, get a chance to win a “Naruto” 2007 Calendar. As usual, snacks provided.

“Sailor Moon R: The Promise of the Rose” (1993) is considered one of the best Sailor Moon movies. The Sailor Moon series was a great introduction to shojo anime that got quite a number of young girls (and a few guys too) hooked onto anime. In the movie, Kisenian, disguised as a meteor, aims to steal the Earth’s positive energy and replace it with hate. She is able to recruit Fiore, who is jealous of Sailor Moon and Darius, and together they try to gather energy from every star and planet.

Brought to you by AASA Special Fees.

When: Saturday, January 27, 2 - 4 pm

Our first movie in the series is “Porco Rosso” (Kurenai no buta), directed by Hayao Miyazaki, director of award-winning “Spirited Away” and “Princess Mononoke.”

Summary: In Early 1930’s era Italy, air pirates, bounty hunters and high fliers of all sorts rule the skies. The most cunning and skilled of these pilots is Porco Rosso, a man cursed with the head of a pig after watching the spirits of the pilots killed in the last air battle he fought in rise to the heavens. He now makes a living taking jobs, such as rescuing those kidnapped by air pirates. Donald Curtis, Porco’s rival in the air and in catching the affections of women, provides a constant challenge to the hero, culminating in a hilarious, action packed finale.

For our Halloween Special this year, we’ll be showing “Perfect Blue” (1998) which is a horror movie about a pop singer turned actress stalked by an obsessed fan and an online alternate her.

As usual, it’ll be 2 pm at Bldg 200. Look for signs for exact location. We’ll be carving/drawing on pumpkins at 1 pm. If you’re interested in a pumpkin, please send Eunice an email by Thursday so I’ll know how many pumpkins to get.
