STANFORD | ITSS | CCS | NETWORKINGAppletalk Routing Changes
|
||
Note that this document refers to appletalk changes on the main Stanford campus. The Medical Center and Hospital already route appletalk through Cisco routers.
Currently, many networks route appletalk by using Shiva Fastpaths. Appletalk is used for appleshare and apple printing (Chooser on Macintoshes). Because Fastpaths are no longer being made and are gradually breaking as they get older, a new parallel Appletalk network was implemented early this year. This network does not use Fastpaths but Cisco routers. Below are diagrams of both old and new routing schemes.

A network connected to the Cisco Appletalk network will still need Fastpaths for localtalk-to-ethernet connections. All other Fastpaths can be turned off because local Fastpaths will no longer provide routing for local Macintoshes.
Note that networks connected to the Cisco Appletalk network can talk to each other without an intervening fastpath. To talk to the few remaining networks using fastpaths for routing requires going through the Stanford-kfps (171.64.2.10).
You can see who the master fastpath is by looking at the Stanford atalkatab file. If the master fastpath listed for your zone is 171.64.2.10 , your network is on the Cisco Appletalk network.
As departmental networks are moved from the older generation distribution routers to the new distribution switch/routers on the new SUNet backbone (the Cube), Networking Systems will move departmental networks onto the Cisco Appletalk network. The Cisco Appletalk network provides the same services that the old fastpath scheme does. However, if two appletalk networks are both on the Cisco Appletalk network, communication between those two networks will be faster than between two appletalk networks using fastpaths. Local Network Administrators will be notified that we would like to move their nets to the new Appletalk network. If you have any concerns or would like to postpone the move, please let your network consultant know or email network-help@lists.
