About NAIJA

Nigerian Students Association's Mission and Services

Nigerian Students Association (NAIJA) is a student-run organization with one clear, concise mission: to educate and celebrate the deep beauty of Nigeria's diverse culture and heritage to fellow Stanford students and neighboring communities. Informing others of Nigeria's rich diversity serves two purposes: to dispel persuasive, often unfounded stereotypes that people have about Africa/Africans and to encourage people to learn more about other cultures and countries within Africa.

NAIJA adds to Stanford's much appreciated multicultural environment on campus. Cultural organizations, like ours, seek to unify different people by educating one another. By dispelling negative, incorrect cultural misconceptions, we help to create friendships and unforgettable experiences with people from all backgrounds. Our social events provide meeting grounds for people who want to learn more about other people's differences and similarities, while at the same time, realizing that differences should be embraced, and not ignored.

NAIJA maintains ongoing partnerships with on-campus organizations that uphold and advocate similar values, so that we can help to organize academic and social events that showcase all aspects of Nigeria's culture, spanning from current political issues to the history of Nigeria's indigenous tribes. Participating NAIJA members volunteer their time to ensure that our events are enjoyable and engaging for those who attend our programs. Our NAIJA volunteers devote innumerable hours of their time to this organization, because they strongly believe in NAIJA's philosophy of promoting culturally oriented education, in this case Africa, and bridging cultural divides between Africans and African Americans.

Since its inception, NAIJA has involved roughly 35 unduplicated volunteers to help produce our events. As of 2004, NAIJA has over 75 registered members. We have also formed relationships with Black Community Service Center (BCSC), and Stanford Association of African Students (SASA) , just to name a few.
