About

Stanford Mock Trial is a student group at Stanford University that competes at mock trial tournaments across the country. Every year we work on the case generated by the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA), the United States's college mock trial program.

About College Mock Trial

Mock trial is an academic activity that allows students to simulate an American legal proceeding. Each year, the AMTA case committee develops a case complete with legal statues, witness affidavits, and evidence. Each year alternates between civil and criminal proceedings. Students take on roles as attorneys, witnesses, or both and prepare speeches and examinations for tournaments. Students are required to learn about the case and American law. We use rules of evidence based on the Federal Rules of Evidence and present our case before experienced judges and attorneys.

About Stanford's Team

Stanford sends between two and four teams to competitions each year. Each team consists of six to eight team members and one to two alternates. Depending on the number of people on each team, members may assume multiple roles—up to one on each side of the case.

Every year our teams go to one or two invitational tournaments in Los Angeles or Arizona in fall and winter. In February, we go to the Regional Tournament in Portland, Oregon. Depeding on our success at Regionals, our teams may advance to national tournaments.

The 2008 Season

This year was a very exciting year for Stanford Mock Trial. We had a young team (only two graduating seniors), but our teams performed as well as any in our history. At the National Tournament in Tucson Arizona, our teams took first and second places. As a result of this stellar performance, both teams advanced to the National Championship Tournament in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
