Objective

By the end of this activity students will have exposure to the vocabulary associated with the Microdocs collection as well as practice with definitions.

Microdocs

All, but especially elements of sustainability, sustainability on coral reefs, species on coral reefs, solutions around the world.

Duration

Each of the shorter crosswords can be completed in approximately 10 minutes.  The longer of the crosswords, which cover four areas of the Microdocs site, should take at least 30 minutes and up to 90 minutes. 

Procedure

Each of the crosswords is available online or in print form.  Student can focus on a section of the Microdocs site watch the videos and work on the corresponding crossword.

Assessment

The print version of the crosswords comes with an answer key.

5. Organisms in ecosystems exchange energy and nutrients among themselves and with the environment. As a basis for understanding this concept:
1. Students know energy entering ecosystems as sunlight is transferred by producers into chemical energy through photosynthesis and then from organism to organism through food webs.
2. Students know matter is transferred over time from one organism to others in the food web and between organisms and the physical environment.
3. Students know populations of organisms can be categorized by the functions they serve in an ecosystem.
4. Students know different kinds of organisms may play similar ecological roles in similar biomes.
