SERDP ER-1552:
Measurement and Modeling of Ecosystem Risk and Recovery
for In Situ Treatment of Contaminated Sediments

Demonstration Site: Hunters Point Shipyard, South Basin, Parcel F

Technical Objectives

  • Demonstrate the utility of biodynamic modeling for predicting PCB uptake by key species
  • Develop rapid tools to measure pore-water and available PCBs
  • Develop a protocol for assessing ecosystem recovery after in-situ remediation
  • 1. Demonstrate the utility of biodynamic modeling for predicting PCB uptake by key species

Parameterize biodynamic model in the laboratory to predict tissue concentrations for key species

Demonstrate applicability of biodynamic model in the field

    2. Develop rapid tools to measure pore-water and available PCBs

Define kinetics of passive samplers and test them for pore water measurements in the field

Assess pore water diffusion & mass transfer with heat flux measurements from data loggers vertivally deployed in the sediment.

    3. Develop a protocol for assessing ecosystem recovery after in-situ remediation

Conduct benthic community surveys to assess recruitment pool for Hunters Point

    Map with 55 stations of
    the benthic community survey (blue
    boxes) and the mud flat
    at Hunters Point Naval Shipyard,
in San Francisco, CA (red box).
