Update on Shak III (1/17/06)
Hello to Stanford Band Old Farts and Friends of the Band!
The news is all good. The Band will finally be getting a permanent home. First of all, thanks to a recent gift of $300,000, the campaign has not only met its basic goal of $2.2 million, but the Band now has $2,816,736 million from 570 donors, enough to fund several features that would have been eliminated otherwise. The new Shak will have a tiered rehearsal hall with room for over 200 players, several smaller rehearsal rooms, a practice room for the Dollies, and many other terrific features. Please check out the architectural plans below.
Lest you think that the additional donation you were going to make but didn’t get around to is no longer needed, the plans for Shak III purposely did not include any funds for furnishings or equipment (in order to give us the best chance of getting the project off the ground). So any donations you might give now or in the future are both needed and useful. Information on how to donate is below.
You might be wondering, okay, where is the new Shak and when will it be ready? We’ve got good news on that front, too. Shak III, to be located in the old DeGuerre Courts building, is already in the process of renovation. Demolition of the old interior started around the beginning of November and is continuing, with an estimated occupancy date of mid-April, 2006. If you’re local or visiting campus and would like to take a look, the DeGuerre Courts building is located just off of Chuck Taylor Grove (facing Angell Field) at the northwest end of the Avery Aquatic Center’s swimming stadium. The building has been almost entirely gutted and is being prepared for the new interior.
Thanks for contributing to the Shak III campaign. We are all looking forward to a great new facility that will further ensure that the Band survives and thrives in the future, and we hope to celebrate Shak III with you in 2006.
The Shak III Fund
Note: In case you didn't get our solicitation letter (21 MB) in December—or if you
didn't get enough of it the first time—check out our appeal for Shak III
funds mailed to nearly 3,000 Band alums. A huge thanks to Julie Stanford for donating her time and expertise to design it—check out Sliced Bread Design if you want her to do your project too (but unlike us, you'll have to pay her). Also, if you want to make sure you receive future SBAB mailings, make sure your address is updated with Stanford University and ask them to tag your file as a Band alum.
If you're an LSJUMB Old Fart™, you've probably heard about the efforts of the LSJUMB and the Stanford Band Alumni Board to raise funds for a new rehearsal facility, which will be located at the current site of the DeGuerre courts. In an effort to provide you with more information, here are some of the pertinent documents surrounding the nature of this effort:
How can I help?
There are many different ways you can contribute to the Shak III fund. And, of course, if you have any questions about a payment method, feel free to ask.
