Only in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico is 8.5" X 11" a "standard paper size." The vast majority of the world has adopted the ISO 216 International Paper Standard:

Presumably given the objectives here, this would make it much more sensible to have the screens be 210 × 297 mm. Seems an ironic oversight...
