Book Reviews

The Stanford Law Review invites the submission of unsolicited book reviews, electronically or by mail.

COVER LETTERS

All submissions, electronic or by mail, must include a cover letter containing the following information:

  • Reviewer information: name, affiliation, contact information (including e-mail address), short biography, and list of past publications;
  • Book information: short summary of the book under review, publication date, publisher, short biography of the author of the book, and any other relevant information;
  • List of any other reviews that have been written about this book;
  • Explanation of this book review's relevance, including what this book review adds if the book has been reviewed elsewhere.

ELECTRONIC SUBMISSIONS

The Stanford Law Review prefers that manuscripts be submitted electronically. If you are submitting electronically, please insert the cover letter at the beginning of the document you intend to upload. Cover letters cannot be uploaded separately. Click here to submit an essay for consideration.

PAPER SUBMISSIONS

Electronic submissions are preferred, but paper submissions are accepted. Please include your e-mail address with your submission, as acknowledgements and decisions will be transmitted by e-mail. Please send manuscripts to:

We regret that such manuscripts cannot be returned.

BOOK REVIEW PROPOSAL SUBMISSIONS

The Stanford Law Review requires submission of the full book review before a decision can be made to publish. However, the Review welcomes the chance to evaluate book review proposals with authors and reviewers and does, on occasion, commission reviews based on this information.

  • Book Authors: if you have a book that you would like us to consider reviewing, please arrange to have a synopsis of the book, your biography, the book itself, a list of the previous reviews that have been published on the book, and a cover letter explaining the book's relevance in its field sent to us at the above address.
  • Reviewers: As we receive a large number of book review proposals, we generally require submission of the full book review before making a decision. Thus, we highly recommend that you submit the fully developed review for our consideration. If you are submitting a proposal, please include a cover letter as specified above for full reviews for consideration. You may submit the proposal electronically or by mail, also outlined above.

ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS

Please address any additional questions about the submissions process to David B. Owens, Senior Articles Editor at book.reviews[at]stanfordlawreview.org.
