The combination of advanced thin film deposition techniques and epitaxy can be used to make materials of great scientific and/or technological significance that are not achievable by other means. In this spirit we are studying deposition and properties of a variety of materials including the half-metallic ferromagnet CrO2, Sr and Ca ruthenates, the copper oxide CuO (related to the high Tc superconductors), and the two-dimensional superconductor TiO x.
