What Is Judo?
Judo is a highly competitive form of martial arts encompassing both standing techniques (grappling and throws) and groundwork (pins, chokes, and armlocks). It was the first Olympic martial art, and it was the only one until 2000, when Tae Kwon Do was introduced. Judo was invented in 1882 by Jigoro Kano, who distilled the essential elements of Jujitsu, because competitive Jujitsu left players injured and paralyzed. The word "judo" in Japanese means "gentle way." He thus created the Kodokan, a school which taught this gentler form. The sport of Judo has grown to be a popular worldwide sport with constantly changing techniques. It has an increasing number of practitioners, both men and women, of all ages.
About Stanford Judo
The Stanford Judo Club began in Fall of 1980 and has grown since then. Today, Stanford Judo remains one of only 2 martial arts at Stanford funded by the Club Sports program, because of its competitive nature. There is a strong focus on competing as a team and as individuals, although many members come for exercise and recreation. There is a broad range of experience within the Stanford Judo Club. We have members of various ranks, many of which are beginner ranks, and encourage people with little or no experience to join. A small glossary of judo and etiquette terms is here.
General Practice Times and Location
Practices are held Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 7pm to 9pm, and Saturdays 12pm-2pm during Autumn, Winter, and Spring quarters. Our kids class meets separately on Fridays, from 5pm to 7pm.
Stanford Judo practices in the Studio in the new Arrillaga Center for Sports and Recreation . Stanford Judo members also often visit a local area judo club called Cahill's Judo and Jujitsu Academy for addition practice times on Tuesday and Thursday nights. For a more detailed map and directions, visit our map page.
Joining Stanford Judo
New members of any experience level are welcome to join at any point during the year -- just show up to any of the regularly scheduled practices with a signed waiver. If you don't own a judo gi, wear an old sweatshirt (and talk to Raul about getting a gi). To join the Stanford Judo Mailing List, please send an e-mail to majordomo@lists.stanford.edu with "subscribe stanfordjudo" in the body. Be sure to set the format to "plain text." We use this list to tell people about upcoming events, special practice times, and important news.
Dues
The quarterly fee for Stanford students is $80, and for non-Stanford students is $100, payable to "Stanford Judo".
