Big Data, continued

“In 15 years, if you don’t have a solid quant background, you might have a permanent pink slip”. Sobering words, from the Wall Street Journal article Big Data, Big Paycheck. Author Nikki Waller warns that Big Data is here to stay, and that if you are not a quantitative expert, you’d better brush up. According to Linda Burtch of Burtch Works, MBAs in midcareer have returned to school to up their quant skills, while young people today will be honing in on quantitative programs as undergrads and grad students. ”Someone who’s 40, they should be concerned,” opines Burtch. “Hopefully their organization will help, recognizing them as a leader and sending them back for training.” So where do you see yourself in relation to Big Data today?

Working from home

While I am in fact not “working from home” at the moment I came across an interesting article from Bloomberg Businessweek reporting on a recent survey done by Wakefield Research. Based on a survey of 1,013 American office workers, 43% watch TV or a movie, 20% play video games and 24% admitted to having a drink during their working from home hours.

And article posted on SRM.org posits that many more workers are telecommuting  depending on who you count and where you get your figures. The numbers could be from 2.9 million to 33.7 million workers.

Library Partners with Finance & Investment Club for Bloomberg Outing

Bloomberg Field-trip! The GSB Library and the Finance & Investment Club are co-sponsoring next week’s trip to the BB offices in San Francisco. The MBAs will gain experience with Bloomberg terminals with a hands-on and  interactive training session that will cover navigation basics, as well as more advanced uses such as fundamental analysis, macro statistics, equity screening/bond screening, basic excel tools and data pulling. We had an overwhelming response – a lengthy wait-list prompted the Library to hold a separate Bloomberg session on GSB’s campus for those without a spot. Look for another trip to BB’s San Fran office this Fall.

Partner up with the GSB Library for your next event!
