Womenomics

womenomics.gif
Womenomics is the title of a book written by Claire Shipman and Katty Kay just added to the Jackson Library collection.

Excerpt from Publisher's weekly review:
The authors assert that after decades of trying to outdo men or fighting the Mommy Wars in the office trenches of the 1980s and 1990s, women have gained enough corporate clout to start changing the workplace to suit their needs. Shipman and Kay review the depth of women's influence as consumers and earners, maintaining that their power gives them the right and the ability to ask for flexibility in their work lives, to negotiate assertively and effectively, to say no and to give up the guilt associated with getting their needs met. Through Shipman and Kay's own stories of struggling with demanding work and home lives and anecdotes from other working mothers, the authors make a convincing argument that with some mental and emotional effort, women can create their ideal work and home lives.

Also take a look at an article written by Claire Shipman on "What Is Womenomics?" to find out more about this concept.

Disappearing Act

Forbes has reported in its latest issue that more women on wall street are taking the brunt of the recent layoffs.

Chia Siu, Brittany Sharpton, Lisa Conley, Amy Bartoletti and Nadine Mentor have filed actions against Citigroup, alleging discrimination, the article states.

The high proportion of men in public finance, coupled with the large numbers of women laid off, are a "clear indication that gender was a reason for selecting the people who were let go," says Wigdor, the attorney for the women executives. He recently filed charges with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission -- a first step before seeking a class action -- alleging they were terminated because they were women. He calls it a case of "recessionary discrimination."

The Practice of Power

GSB Professor Jeff Pfeffer is the object of a recent blog by his colleague Bob Sutton. After reading a draft of a new book on power by Pfeffer, Sutton notes Pfeffer's ability to artfully digress on the subtler techniques of gaining power while remaining a non-practioner himself. As Sutton put it to him, "You write about many ways to gain power, but don't actually use most of them in your life. Why is that?" Pfeffer has an interesting response. The blog goes on to comment on the perils of power, for those who dare seek it.

We need you!

Looking for a new job? In Silicon Valley there is a growing need for data center experts. The mechanical engineers who design and run computer data centers were traditionally regarded as little more than blue-collar workers in the high-tech world. These folks are needed because torrid growth in data centers to keep pace with the demands of Internet-era computing, their immense need for electricity and their inefficient use of that energy pose environmental, energy and economic challenges, experts say.

Don't Sell -- Connect !

If you want to get your point across, start a conversation. In the March 2008 issue of Jungle, Sally Hogshead points out that if you want to get noticed in today’s business environment you must become a conversationalist. There is a definite shift afoot in today's business environment from 'selling' to 'connecting'. For example, you can no longer march into an interview with a list of talking point based on your strengths; you must be ready to engage the interviewer in conversation. So how to get going? The author offers five simple steps:
1. Ask questions
2. Understand your audience's true motivation
3. Smile (an oft-forgotten basic)
4. Let go of some control
5. Google the #$%!! out of anyone with whom you need to connect
Read online or the print issue in Jackson Library.

Fighting the 'B' Word

"Why can't a woman be more like a man?" complained Professor Higgins in My Fair Lady. Springing off this quote, the cover story of the December Jungle issue, Women Taking Charge, focuses on differing perceptions of male and female aggression in the workplace. The article includes mention of a 2007 Catalyst report 'The Double-Bind Dilemma for Women in Leadership: Damned If You Do, Doomed If You Don't' in reflecting on women's challenges for advancement. In today's workplace, author Gwenda Blair notes, male assertiveness is accepted as normal, while an assertive female can be labeled with the 'b' word (it rhymes with 'hitch'). The article goes on to suggest how women can fight stereotyping. In the same issue is a Top 100 'Ideal Employers of Women', with companies like Google, McKinsey & Company, Goldman Sachs and Nike leading the list. Read the article online or see the issue in Jackson Library.
