Speaker:

Scott is a talented teacher and often offers unique views on Scripture. He worked as a newspaper reporter and editor before becoming a pastor, was trained in critical thinking, and carries other such talents as studying the Bible from its original Hebrew.

Synopsis: In this talk, he will expound on the following questions: What does Jesus offer in comparison to what the idols of our world offer? What actually is he offering? Why should we follow him instead of money, sex, power, and success, for example? Together, we'll consider several passages, including Psalm 34:8, John 7:37-38 and John 11:40, to see what Jesus is offering and how it stacks up against the competition.

Synopsis:

The first part of the talk develops a biblical and theological foundation for the passionate romance that God desires. It describes the Trinity as a “yes-saying divine team,” and also at Jesus as the prototype for how we relate to the Father and the Spirit. It also surveys scripture to illuminate three levels of relationship in the Christian life: Royal/Legal, Familial, and Nuptial – emphasizing the last one.
The second part of the talk suggests practical ways we can respond to God’s offer of romance – the Nuptial variety. These include alternate ways of reading scripture, a season of gazing at the cross, time alone with God and with his extended family, learning from our own marriage, and encouragement to sample “Christian hedonism.

Speaker: Jay Kim, College pastor at Church on the Hill, San Jose

Synopsis: Frederick Buechner writes: “Listen to your life.  See it for the fathomless mystery it is.  In the boredom and pain of it, no less than in the excitement and gladness: touch, taste, smell your way to the holy and hidden heart of it, because in the last analysis all moments are key moments, and life itself is grace.”

This Friday, we'll be talking about what it means to experience God in and all around us.  We'll journey through Scripture that affirms this truth and how we can embrace the hope it brings.

Speaker: Nathan George, founder of Trade As One

Synopsis: Nathan will be teaching on Nehemiah, relating it to the story of his life - how God called him to leave his career in software to serve people in extreme poverty, and what we can do to cause change in our contexts.

From the Trade As One site: "I was playing the usual game of saying that I was trying to ‘balance’ all the different priorities in my life but, in reality, almost my whole life’s energies had been poured into my career....It was at this point that God began to show me how His heart breaks for the poor - for a broken world, broken in so many ways that I couldn’t see from the aircraft cabin at 39,000 feet or from the fast lane of the freeway - broken spiritually, socially, environmentally, economically. And that the poor, at the bottom of the pile, have a very special place in his heart and his intentions." - Nathan George

Speaker: Pete and Maria Sommer

Synopsis: IV Grad...where we run the whole range from never-dated to married-with-children. And we rarely put the questions on the table. But the time has come:

  • Why are (God-loving, smart, generous, reasonably good looking) people like those at IV unable to find life-partners?
  • Do you agree that "In the goal-driven, career-oriented environment our modern culture -- of which Stanford graduate school is an extreme example -- I frankly think that a lot of people aren't motivated to pursue relationships because they have other demands in their life."
  • How do you tell a nice guy that you're really not interested? or that you *are*?
  • Since people didn't "date" in the Bible, what guidance can we really expect from God?

The answer to the last one is, Quite a lot, actually.

Pete and Maria Sommer have been married for almost 38 years, and have lived among us for the last six. This Friday, they will share some biblical truths and observations, and take your questions about dating and courtship  in grad school.
