Small Groups 2006-2007
The best way to find spiritual nourishment and enduring Christian friendship is in the more intimate setting of weekly Small Groups. Our hope is that each group will be much more than a mere study and will include all the ingredients of a healthy fellowship of believers. Please contact the leaders if you are interested in their Small Group! (All email addresses are "@stanford.edu" unless noted otherwise.)
We have five small group fellowships this year...
1. Acts
Leaders: Jonathan Rylander (rylandjh), Kristyn Jackson (kljackson), David Hiller (djhiller)
Time: Tues 7:30-9:30 pm
Place: "The Ranch" - Rains 226 Apt 101
Come join us as we look at the Church's foundation in the book of Acts. We will start where the gospels leave off, when the church was just a small group of Jesus' followers, and follow its journey and struggles as it became a worldwide movement. We will see the leadership of Peter and the passion of Paul. We will take a special look into the community and love shown by the early church, and the transforming power of the Holy Spirit.
2. The Ecclesiastesites
,
Leader: Robert Newsome (rnewsome), Lena Ho (lenaho)
Time: Mondays 7:30-9:30 pm
Place: Timoshenko Lounge (Rains)
What is the meaning of life? And how are we to deal with happiness, hardship, success, failure, change, and lack of change? The Bible deals very frankly with many of these issues and introduces us to the God who can actually change lives. This year, we will camp out in Ecclesiastes, while taking several hikes into other scripture passages in both the Old and New Testaments, in an effort to see human life from God's point of view. We seek to be a community that 'does life' together through fellowship, prayer, study, and service.
3. The Cross Trainers
Leader: Jonathan Gray (jmgray)
Time: Mondays 7-9 pm
Place: email Jonathan
Paul writes to Timothy: "Train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come." Our group will seek to do this by imitating the practices of Christ and the apostles, that is that spiritual disciplines such as prayer, worship, solitude, study, fasting, etc. We will not merely study these disciplines, but also strive to implement them in our lives while encouraging each other and fostering genuine community. Join us!
4. Faith and Freedom in Christ: A Spiritual Journey through Galatians, Ephesians, and Philippians
Leaders: Julie Won (juljwon), Sandy Philipose (sandyp), Kevin Carlberg (carlberg)
Time: Wednesdays 7-9 pm
Place: Lyman 1306
As graduate students it is easy to get lost in the minutiae of academia and forget about our identity in Christ. In our small group, we will seek to deepen our faith by discussing what it means to put Christ in the center of our lives and to be free in Christ. We will look at Paul's corrections against false teaching, how to not be derailed in our faith, our role as the living body of Christ, and how to live a life of true joy. In our weekly meetings, we will focus on personal and corporate growth through study, fellowship, food, and occasional tomfoolery. We hope this group will be a place for spiritual growth, encouragement, and genuine community.
5. Joy at Work
Leaders: Paul Leu (pleu), Wendy Ching (wching)
Time: Tuesdays, 7:30-9pm
Place: Escondido Village 6D
Work sucks? We know. But that's not the way God intended it to be. Come and join us as we delve into various Biblical teachings on the purpose of work and how we can discover joy in it. We will be looking at texts from Genesis, Ecclesiastes, the Parables, and more. Throughout our studies we will explore such themes as stewardship, calling, success and failure, humility, and love. We seek to support each other through prayer in the pursuit of our callings and to build community through worship, service, food, games, and fun!
