Small Groups 2007-2008
The best way to find spiritual nourishment and enduring Christian friendship is in the more intimate setting of weekly Small Groups. Our hope is that each group will be much more than a mere study and will include all the ingredients of a healthy fellowship of believers. Please contact the leaders if you are interested in their Small Group! (All email addresses are "@stanford.edu" unless noted otherwise.)
We have five small group fellowships this year...
1. A Pstudy of the Psalms
Leaders: Amy Chambers (amyjchambers@yahoo.com), David Hiller (djhiller), Isaac Penny (ipenny)
Time: Wednesdays, 7:30-9:30 pm
Place: Timoshenko Lounge, Rains (map)
We will be studying the Psalms this year. The Psalms are primarily
about how we respond to God rather than what we believe about God.
However, we will catch glimpses throughout the study of the character
of God and the nature of His dealings with man. Through seeing this big
picture, we can learn how to communicate with God regardless of the
circumstances we are in. Finally, we will learn about our collective
identity in Christ by studying Israel as the People of God. Come join
us as we Pstudy the Psalms together!

2. Foundations
,

Leader: Kyle Heath (heathkh), Paul Leu (pleu), Lynn Scofield (lynnsco@gmail.com)
Time: Mondays 7:00-9:00 pm
Place: email leaders for current location
This group will explore the rich themes and methods of Christian theology not only with our minds but also with our hearts. We will highlight particular theologians and touch upon church history in looking at the relation of theology to scripture, tradition, and reason. We will be using Alister McGrath's excellent Theology: The Basics to delve into themes contained in the Apostle's Creed such as faith, the Bible, Jesus, salvation, the trinity, and the church. Join us as we explore the foundations of our faith! We seek to nurture genuine community through worship, prayer, and service together.
3. Kingdom Chasers

Leader: David Klaus (dklaus), Xianne Leong (xianne)
Time: Mondays 7:30-9:30 pm
Place: Lyman 1312a
The Kingdom of God. Jesus talked a LOT about the .Kingdom of God. in his preaching. But what REALLY is this Kingdom? To understand where Jesus is coming from, we need to look for clues throughout both the Old and the New Testaments. This year, we'll study the Kingdom of God as a theme throughout the Bible, and learn what it means to live as true citizens of His Kingdom.
4. Mark

Leaders: Jacob Mattingley (jacobm), Robert Newsome (rtnewsome), May Lin Au Yong (auyong)
Time: Mondays 7:30-9:30 pm
Place: 8 Comstock Circle #106
We live in a society that makes much use
of Jesus' name, but who was he really?
What did he actually say and do, where
did he travel, what kinds of people did
he talk to, and what was on his mind
and heart? In our study, we seek to
meet the person of Jesus in the words of
Mark's gospel. Through a close reading
of the text, we will pursue the question
asked by so many of the people in Jesus'
wake: "Who is this?" Join us as we
(re)discover the character of Jesus and
enjoy fellowship, prayer, study and
service.

5. Heart of God

Leaders: Kevin Carlberg (carlberg), Byunghang Ha (deepsky) Time: Tuesdays, 7-9pm
Place: Lyman 3407
This group seeks to return to the core object of our faith - God, and the Greatest Commandment we have received. We will focus on God and His attributes in the autumn quarter. In the winter quarter, we will discuss how the character of God inclines us to love Him with our entire heart, soul, mind, and strength. In the third quarter, we will consider how God empowers us to genuinely love our neighbor as our own self, as well as how we can genuinely and practically carry this out as graduate students. We will also seek to build community, engage in some tomfoolery, and eat absurd amounts of Ivan's home-cookin'!
