There is a growing awareness that addressing medical/biotechnical problems is not simply an issue of advancing natural science discovery or technical innovation. Instead social science research has a critical role in tackling issues such as AIDS/HIV treatment, aging, etc. NSF and IRiSS share a commitment to ‘develop a cadre of scientists who can integrate diverse scientific approaches and work in interdisciplinary teams to solve complex health problems.’

IRiSS draws together faculty from different disciplines whose research will advance our understanding of bio-social science . When the Institute moves into its new facilities, it will provide the computational facilities, statistical consulting, access to specialized medical/diagnostic equipment, and special lab spaces for research which links the biological and social sciences.
