Spring

April 18 – (slot open)
May 2 – (slot open)
May 16 – (slot open)
May 30 – (slot open)
Publicity for each talk, including an abstract, will be posted on Monday
of the same week. Those interested in presenting on the dates for which
the slots are still open should contact Ozlem Yuksel at oyuksel@stanford.edu.
Mentoring Program
We need to see if the small number of people who have already expressed
interest in the program are still interested. We fear that many who were
initially interested may now be graduating, such as the MS students. If
enough are still interested, we should consider asking for their major
interest area, so we can match people up for effectively. In preparation
for a larger program beginning in the next school year, we should reiterate
and enhance the benefits for participating in the program and contact people
early.
Faculty Lunches
Tom Byers will host the next faculty lunch on February 25th. With PRISMS
at the beginning of March, Dalerie proposed that this be the only faculty
lunch this quarter. Two or three more faculty lunches will hopefully take
place in the spring quarter.
Web Site Design
Updates having continued to occur on the Stanford INFORMS website, particularly
for the Pacific Region Intercollegiate Symposium for the Management Sciences
(PRISMS). A new link from the department web site has been created, and
a fill-in pre-registration form is in the works. The web site can be found
at www.stanford.edu/group/informs.
Pacific Regional Intercollegiate Symposium in the Management Sciences (PRISMS)
We are receiving PRISMS pre-registrations everyday, with participants so
far from Stanford University, University of California at Berkeley, and
California State University at Hayward. The deadline to pre-register and
pay only $4 for registration is February 23rd. Registrations on the day
of the symposium will be $6. Deadlines to participate in one of the competitions
is also February 23rd. For information on the Case Study Competition (for
undergraduates and masters students),
Poster Competition, and/or Research Presentation Competition (primarily
for graduate students), see the PRISMS link on the Stanford INFORMS web
site: http://www.stanford.edu/group/informs.
The industry speaker, Harlan Crowder, principal scientist from HP Labs,
has been confirmed. A panel discussion on publishing issues will take place,
with participation of Steven Nahmias from Santa Clara University already
confirmed. At least three judges have also been confirmed for each of the
above competitive events, including faculty from participating universities
and industry personnel.
The Graduate Student Council, School of Engineering, Department of Management
Science and Engineering, and national INFORMS have each confirmed co-sponsorship
of PRISMS in the form of financial support. We are now considering other
forms of publicity to reach a wider audience, including newspapers and
other periodicals, as well as Stanford Calendous. Ting is busily preparing
additional flyers, which will be posted across the campus, and a reminder
for pre-registration will be sent out by email as soon as the fill-in form
is up and running.
National INFORMS has provided us with vinyl folders for registration
materials and a number of inserts, including flyers for upcoming conferences.
