Executive Council Meeting
Date: April 16, 2002
Location: Nuts & Mud
Convened: 2:15 p.m.
Special Speaker
Kenneth McKay, professor of Business Administration at Memorial University of Newfoundland, is returning once again on the anniversary of his visit last year. He will be giving a talk on the subject of DSS for scheduling in the real world-a focused factory situation-on May 30th.
Enthusiastic Masters Students
Harry Shi and Umur Cubukcu visited our meeting today seeking support for more informal social opportunities for MS&E masters students. They are seeking an alumni database for networking and more social events. We encouraged them to take advantage of the existing student organizations within MS&E to make their ideas successful. Stanford INFORMS is interested in extending its faculty lunch program to include masters student lunches and invites masters student support and participation for all the events we sponsor, including activities such as picnics, presentations, and the PRISMS case study competition. The MS&E Student Association would benefit from having active masters students contributing new ideas for social activities in the department.
Spring Picnic / Carnival
The Spring Picnic hosted by Stanford INFORMS for all students and faculty interested in operations research or the management sciences will be held on Thursday, May 16th, at 3:00 pm. The event, hopefully to be located between Terman and Thornton or in Gibbons Grove, will include free food, carnival games, and prizes. Game ideas generated so far include a 3-legged race, water-balloon toss, egg relay, pass-the-orange, dart shooting, bean-bag tossing, and a spinning pumpkin ride. Food ideas generated so far include burgers, ice-cream sundaes, cotton candy, and popcorn. We will continue to brainstorm.
T-shirts
T-shirts for the executive council and perhaps available to all Stanford INFORMS members is a cool idea. We need to start thinking of a design and what color T-shirt would be best. Brandon is getting pricing information. Maybe they could be carnival prizes; maybe they could be awarded to next year's exec team upon their election.
Case Studies
BASES has expressed interest in hosting 3-4 case study competitions each year, similar to the competition we hosted at PRISMS. We are contemplated working with them in this venture. These case study competitions could be used as qualifier competitions for the PRISMS event next year, hosted by Berkeley. Winners would have their PRISMS entry fee paid.
