Executive Council Meeting

Date: January 15, 2003

Location: Terman 498

Convened: Noon.

Brown Bag Research Talks

Ting has scheduled two brown bag talks for the winter quarter. Seth Guikema will give a talk on his research "Optimal Resource Allocation in an Engineering Design Team With Informational Asymmetries", and Goker Aydin will present his work on "Supply Chain Coordination and Assortment Planning". Ting is in charge of finding speakers, fixing the dates, acquiring abstracts and titles, and sending out email announcements before each talk.

 Speaker Event with NorCal

Northern California INFORMS chapter sponsors a talk by JIM MATHESON, who is Chairman of SmartOrg, Inc. and consulting Professor at Stanford University. He will highlight historical developments on DA, and illustrate how the introduction of new tools and practices has changed the field. The temporary schedule is at 6-8pm on February 6th. There will be a short reception after the talk.

Plant Tour with AIM

INFORMS will co-organize a plant tour to NUMMI in late February with AIM. Gary is in contact with AIM people to get INFORMS members involved. Both Gary and Mark think there are more opportunities on plant tour to explore, i.e., INFORMS can have a "member company" like AMD and CISCO so that INFORMS members can visit their plants (if there are any) or INFORMS can invite people from these companies to give a talk on Stanford campus. Some brief survey can be done beforehand to see what topics our members are interested in. We can then invite speakers accordingly.

Frisbee Golf

This will be a good quarter to have a frisbee golf event. The execs seem to have different perspectives on what kind of fun events to have, and which side -- the graduate or the undergraduate should be more involved in these fun events. Since MS&E Student Association organizes Happy Hour every week, we need to think about what value INFORMS could add by organizing more fun events. Maybe undergraduate execs could be more active in getting some faculty members to join some fun games like volleyball or softball game with undergraduate.

Social Event

We are thinking of having a big social event like boat race of the past fall quarter.  Gary proposed that we could have some sort of OR betting game.  More brainstorming on what event to have is needed.

Exec Council Meeting Schedule

We plan to have a fixed Exec Council meeting schedule at noon in Nuts & Muds (Terman basement) once every two weeks. Hong is in charge of sending out emails.

Career Night

Chris is thinking about having a career night for undergraduates. The basic idea is to invite alumni who work in the MS&E field to have a panel discussion with undergraduates on their work experience and their career advice.

Faculty Lunches

Chris plans to organize one faculty lunch with Professor Ross Shachter for undergraduates in the winter quarter.
