Panel Discussion: Industry vs B-School vs Grad School

Are you ever in the dilemma as to what is the right career path for you - graduate school or going straight to industry or pursuing an MBA degree? Stanford IEEE Student Branch and Women in Electrical Engg (WEE) are excited to present a panel discussion on this topic "Industry vs B-School vs Grad School" on Thursday, May 5, 2011 from 7:00pm - 8:30pm in CISX 101. Dinner is included. The panel features alumni from Stanford with varied backgrounds including recent graduates pioneering their own innovative start-ups to top executives of multinational corporations. They have all carved a successful career for themselves and are eager to share their stories with you. We invite you to hear these stories, and come and ask them questions about how they chose their career paths ? What led them to choose graduate school or business school in their careers? IEEE EDS Distinguished Lecture on Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)

IEEE SCV Electron Devices Society & Stanford IEEE Student Branch bring to you a Distinguished Lecture on "Future ESD Challenges for IC Components and Systems" by Dr. Charvaka Duvvury, Texas Instruments (Dallas, USA), EDS Distinguished Lecturer. Component level IC protection against ESD has seriously become a major challenge due to advanced scaling of silicon technologies and the development of complex high speed circuits including the effects of system on chip (SoC) applications. Analog and RF designs pose particular limitations. Simultaneous to these, the IC package technology roadmap for larger high pin count packages and the System in Package (SiP) are making it more complicated to design the expected component level ESD performance while meeting the IO high speed requirements. In addition to the necessary component level ESD protection for safe handling at the IC production areas, the system level ESD protection at the board level during end-user applications is becoming even more critical. An understanding of coupling from the interface pins and cross-coupling between pins of different ICs on the board would be important for system level ESD protection designs. This seminar will address these important topics and give an insight into the strategies for coupling from component to system protection design. A roadmap for ESD and the need for innovative approaches that include advanced simulations will be reviewed.

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you are not alone. WEE and IEEE together bring this workshop that will present simple, doable action steps that you can take to increase and maintain your writing productivity over the course of a long-term writing project. If you've been unhappy with your writing output, the strategies presented here can help you turn around your writing habits, while dispelling common myths about writing that impede productivity. It's amazing how small changes in how you work can result in more publications! Write more, stress less, be happier and more productive!

Jeff Fisher and Ron Moore will be talking about how Lockheed Martin does product validation and verification and what happens when Engineering meets Economics. Jeff Fisher is a Lockheed Martin Fellow and completed his PhD in Aero-Astro (PhD minor in EE) at Stanford, and Ron Moore is a senior manager. Both Jeff and Ron work on space technologies and electronics at Lockheed Martin's Sunnyvale facility. Join us on Tuesday, February 29th in Herrin T175. RSVPs are not necessary but are appreciated.

Intellectual Property Law and Entrepreneurship

Featuring Richard Dickson, J.D. 94, Chair, Corporate Group, Fenwick & West LLP. With their imaginative ideas, many Stanford engineering students have gone on to make great contributions to Silicon Valley. However, new companies face other problems in addition to the rush to produce a product. Most students do not have the legal knowledge to start a company right away. Covering another side to start-ups, Attorney Richard Dickson will discuss intellectual property law and what students starting companies should know about the topic. He will also talk about the legal perspective regarding start-ups. Mr. Dickson advises technology companies, including Internet, telecommunications, software and semiconductor companies. His practice includes start-up counseling, venture capital financings, intellectual property protection and licensing, joint ventures and other strategic alliances, mergers and acquisitions and initial public offerings. Mr. Dickson has advised companies including Facebook, Sequioa Capital, Intuit, and Electronic Arts.

IEEE Academic Talk: The Flow of Information in Networks

The information we experience online comes to us continuously over time, assembled from many small pieces and conveyed through our social networks. This merging of information, network structure, and flow over time requires new ways of reasoning about the large-scale behavior of information networks. This talk discusses a set of approaches for tracking information as it travels and mutates in online networks. We show how to capture temporal patterns in the news over a daily time-scale- in particular, the succession of story lines that evolve and compete for attention. This talk will also discuss a model to quantify the influence of individual media sites on the popularity of news stories and an algorithm for inferring latent information diffusion networks.

Apple Stanford Networking Night

IEEE Student Application Apple is hosting a networking night in downtown Palo Alto on Tuesday, January 25th, from 6-8 PM in downtown Palo Alto. Stanford IEEE is allowed to send five members to this event, which is a great opportunity to talk to hiring managers from Apple who are hiring both interns and full time employees. This event is open to undergraduate and graduate students in EE, CS/CSE, and ME/Product Design. Applications are due in by noon on Thursday, January 18th. Visualizing Twitter ? Stanford IEEE/Twitter Tech Talk

With more than 110 million tweets and over 12 terabytes of log data generated every day, our engineers and data scientists face an enormous challenge to understand and visualize the activity taking place on Twitter. In this presentation we show some of the visualization and summarization techniques we use to gather useful insights, detect anomalies and better understand our users and their behavior. Rion Snow leads a team building relevance and discovery technologies at Twitter. Before joining Twitter, he received his PhD in Computer Science at Stanford in 2009, researching machine learning and natural language processing with Andrew Ng and Dan Jurafsky.

Integrating Social Media with Web Search

Integrating social media with traditional web search is an exciting new direction in the search industry. Social networks can be thought of as an early warning system? for things like breaking news and trending topics. However, algorithmically detecting this information is challenging. For example, detection must happen in near real-time (i.e. having an early warning system without the early part is useless). At the same time, updates to social networks (e.g. tweets/buzzes) occur at ever increasing rates, making it difficult for processing systems to keep up.. This talk is about a stream processing system used by Bing that solves this problem in general.
