Color
As one of Stanford's strongest emblems, the University seal will be most effective if it is always used in a consistent manner. Please conform to these color standards whenever using the Stanford seal on communications. Seal artwork is available in the download section.

Note: Color printing advice
All stationery items produced by Stanford's online printer are printed on an offset litho press, using PANTONE 201 for Cardinal. On items that incorporate the seal, the density of this color was "run-down" on press to achieve the sharp and open look of the seal. If the density is run too high, the seal can start to look plugged and the rules of the seal will become thick. The best way to reproduce this color when printing the seal, or whenever using Stanford's specified PANTONE 201, is to request an ink "draw-down" from your printer. With a draw-down and an on-site press check, you can ensure consistent color and high-quality reproduction of the seal.
University Seal
The seal is always one color. The preferred color presentation for the seal is in Cardinal. When Cardinal is not available or appropriate, a black seal may be used. The seal may be rendered in gold or silver foil stamping when printing on the highest quality communications.

The background field of the seal will usually appear in white. It is also acceptable to use a neutral colored paper stock or other background color as the background field of the seal.

Graphic design professionals can change the background field color of the seal by selecting the circular white disc at the back of the seal eps artwork. The disc color should only be changed to match a background color on which the seal appears.

Background Colors
The seal may be placed on any background color that provides sufficient contrast. There is a special version of the seal artwork for use when there is insufficient contrast between the seal and background colors. The artwork incorporates an additional white line around the exterior edge of the seal to separate it from the colored background. Always download correct artwork.

Seal as a Watermark
The seal may be used as a background for watermark paper, or as a simulated watermark effect by using a very light, neutral colored background graphic, or tone-on-tone treatment.

Seal on Non-printed Materials
The seal may be etched on glass, embossed, debossed and engraved. It may be applied to various materials such as fabric, metal, plastics, glass, ceramics, etc. The seal always appears as one color only. Always check the seal for quality during the production process. The seal will reproduce best with high-resolution production methods.
