Winter Quarter, Tuesdays 7:00-8:00 pm, Place TBA
Sponsor: Professor Gordon Chang, Department of History
1-2 units P/NC

What is Korean American culture?
Who defines what it is?
How is it
different from Korean and American culture?

This class seeks for its participants to engage in dialogue about these
questions. We will work from the assumption that Korean American culture can be
defined in many ways and encompasses more than what is traditionally considered
culture. The topics for this course will cover several broad areas including
history, literature/poetry, music, community, and gender issues. The class will
meet weekly, with short readings and discussions being the integral part of the
course. There will also be several speakers who will perform different kinds of
Korean/Korean American music and discuss cultural activism.
This class is offered through Asian American Studies, CSRE, and History. The
class requires regular attendance, two short reflection papers, and an
additional paper for those taking the class for 2 units. For more information,
please contact Jennie Kim, jennie@leland.stanford.edu
