A Specialized Clinic for Children Diagnosed with Holoprosencephaly

At Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas, Texas, there is a special clinic dedicated soley to children diagnosed with holoprosencephaly (HPE). A multi-disciplinary team thoroughly evaluates each child and implements plans for further care. HPE Team members include: Mauricio R. Delgado, M.D. (Director of Neurology at TSRHC), Nancy J. Clegg, R.N., Ph.D. (HPE Clinic Director and National Project Director), physician assistants, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, dieticians, social workers, and child life specialists. Additionally, on an as needed basis, there are other services available at TSRHC for patients with HPE including: orthopedics, orthotics, mobility, laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, neurophysiology, movement science, and psychology. For a child to be considered for evaluation, an application must be completed which includes a physician referral with history, medical records and scans.

Dr. Mauricio Delgado has more than 20 years of experience in pediatric neurology. He received his pediatric training at the University of Ottawa, in Ottawa, Canada. In conjunction to his work at the hospital, he also serves as professor of neurology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He is board certified in neurology with special qualifications in child neurology and neurorehabilitation and a certified member of the American Society of Neurorehabilitation. Additionally, he serves on the professional advisory board of the National Tuberous Sclerosis Association.

Nancy J. Clegg, R.N., Ph.D.

Dr. Clegg has 20 years of experience in pediatric nursing. She obtained her undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee and a Master of Science degree from the University of Texas. She is currently an Advanced Practice Nurse and was formerly on the faculty of the University of Texas. Her clinical focus has always been caring for children with chronic illnesses and their families; her main field of expertise is family coping and adaptation. Fascinated by new scientific discoveries and motivated to find better ways to help families, she returned to school to obtain her PhD in research. Upon graduation she joined the neurology staff at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas, Texas. At this time, her practice is totally devoted to the advancement of HPE research, education, and practice. Currently, she is serving as the National HPE Project Director for the Carter Centers.

With a background of providing medical care for children born with facial deformities in foreign countries, Robbie is enthusiastic about her new role as research assistant supporting the Carter Centers’ National HPE Project. As a past director of two non-profit organizations providing free surgical care to children, Robbie is dedicated to helping children in need of specialized medical care. She is proud to be part of the Carter Centers’ National HPE Project, helping parents find HOPE and the specialized medical treatment their children need.

Kim Burke, B.S. 
Neurology Research Assistant
 
Kim Burke graduated Midwestern State University in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. Currently she is a research assistant for the Neurology Department working mainly on the National HPE Project. She was happy to join the Carter Center Team.
