energy metabolism

Another word for metabolism, which is the process of cells burning food to produce energy. This is similar to a car’s engine burning gasoline to produce the energy that is used to rotate the car’s wheels. The cell’s mitochondria acts as the car’s engine, the food we eat acts as the gasoline, and the energy we need to move and think is similar to the energy used to move the car.
