Stanford Downs UCLA Twice in Weekend Opener
Stanford completed a sweep of a weekend series with UCLA to start off the
season undefeated in conference play. The team jumped out to an early 3-0 lead
midway through the 2nd period of the Friday evening game, only to see
UCLA crawl back to tie the game at 3-3. Stanford took a 4-3 lead late into the
2nd thanks to a goal by Joe “Franchise” Ulerich, his second of the
game. UCLA tied the game early in the 3rd period only to see
Stanford retaliate with two well-worked goals from Ulerich to cap off his
four-goal performance and to give Stanford a 6-4 lead with less than 10 to go.
With minutes left in the game a freak light outage suspended play for 15 minutes
and gave the hard working UCLA team a chance to rest up. They came out of the
delay on a mission and grabbed a quick goal, but could not get the tying goal
past Stanford goalie, Otis “I don’t Eat Meat, but I do eat Rubber” Chodosh.
Stanford capped off the frenetic game with an empty net goal from team captain
Max “Silky Smooth Hands” Guise.
The second tilt was an equally hard fought match that went down to the
wire. UCLA took an early lead in the hard hitting matchup, but Stanford leveled
mid way through the first period, and soon took the lead off a goal from Dave
“Mary, Row Your Boat Home” Creighton. UCLA evened the game late in the first to
leave it tied entering the second period. The team traded goals before a late
hit injured Stanford Asst. Capt James “Doodles” Dudley. Alden “Timmaaaay”
Timme also reported feeling injured from the hit, but Stanford team doctors
attributed that to phantom pains often associated with twins. The chipper
referees assessed a game misconduct on the UCLA hitman and Stanford converted
quickly to take a one goal lead. UCLA rallied however, and tied the game on a
late powerplay after a questionable penalty call on Stanford newcomer Chris
“Cleanest Player Alive” Grieco. A hard fought overtime ended scoreless thanks
to Stanford’s defensive prowess lead by the recovered Dudley, and the tenacity
of local blueliner Matty “If it’s not right it’s gotta be” Wong. The shootout
was all Cardinal, with Stanford stopper Chodosh turning away all four of UCLA’s
penalties to give Stanford the win and the weekend sweep.
The Angry Christmas trees are now 5-1 (2-0 conf.) heading into weekend match
ups with UC Davis (Home, Fri. 4:40pm) and Cal (Oakland Ice Center, Sat. 5:45pm)
and are getting stronger under the tutelage of new assistant coach, Taku “Che
Guevara” Ide who is incorporating revolutionary new tactics into the already
strong Stanford squadron.

February 2nd, 2008, Stanford 5, California 3
Back at home, the Cardinal looked to avenge a frustrating Friday night
loss. Though Cal struck twice, Stanford fought back to make it 4-2.
After ringing yet another off the post at the end of the second,
Stanford saw Cal walk it down the ice and pull within one at the end
of the second. But, with the Stanford Band having just arrived from a
home basketball game and the energy in the crowd picking up, Stanford
would not disappoint. For the first time all season, the Card did not
allow a single goal in the third, playing tough defense and icing the
cake with an Andy Meyerson empty-netter to cap off a 5-3 win and a
season full of improvements. Thanks to the Band and the fans who came
out--we look forward to next October!
February 1st, 2008, California 9, Stanford 5
A Stanford-hating Berkeley home crowd got treated to a quick start
from the Golden Bears, who lit the lamp within the first minute of
play, and grabbed a 2-0 lead several minutes later. But the Cardinal
fought back, pulling within one at the end of the first and tying it
in the second. Three Cal goals got the crowd back into it, but once
again, the Card struck twice--only minutes apart--to pull within one,
and later hit a crossbar that could be heard across the Bay. The Bears
proved to be too much though, and they came away with a solid 9-5 win.
Trash-talking and physicality at the end of the game promised for an
interesting saturday matchup at Stanford.
January 11th & 12th, 2008
In a true roller coaster of a game on Friday night, UCLA struck first and
early, but Stanford answered with 2 goals in the first period and added a third
in the second. The Bruins responded with 4 straight of their own, three of
which came in a span of minutes in the second. But the Cardinal Bounced
back and dominated the third period, finishing with 4 unanswered scores and a
7-5 win.
Saturday night saw a rejuvenated and hungry Bruin team score the first three
before Stanford lit the lamp to make it 3-1 in the second. However, that
would prove to be all the Card could muster. UCLA finished a strong team
effort with a 6-1 win and a weekend series split with Stanford.
Of note: Peter Radu (#12) was on the ice for two of Stanford's goals, and
finished the weekend with an impressive plus-1 rating.
Dec. 1st, 2007 - Stanford splits with Cal
After a first-period, 3-goal deficit, the Cardinal came back to win 6-4 over
Cal at the Oakland Ice Center on Thursday. On Friday, Stanford couldn't

score of Friday's game was 8-4.
Nov. 26th, 2007 - Stanford prepares for Big Freeze
The Cardinal will face Cal in a two-game series this weekend beginning in
Oakland on Thursday night. Stanford's home game will take place at Redwood
City Ice Oasis on Friday, November 30th, at 4:40PM. See below for

over Santa Clara

penalty-ridden game. The team salvaged the weekend, however, with an

neck-and-neck game against Santa Clara, Zach Klurfeld tallied four points, and
Preston Chan added two goals and one assist, including the overtime, breakaway
