Stanford Downs UCLA Twice in Weekend Opener

Stanford completed a sweep of a weekend series with UCLA to start off the season undefeated in conference play.  The team jumped out to an early 3-0 lead midway through the 2nd period of the Friday evening game, only to see UCLA crawl back to tie the game at 3-3.   Stanford took a 4-3 lead late into the 2nd thanks to a goal by Joe "Franchise" Ulerich, his second of the game.  UCLA tied the game early in the 3rd period only to see Stanford retaliate with two well-worked goals from Ulerich to cap off his four-goal performance and to give Stanford a 6-4 lead with less than 10 to go.  With minutes left in the game a freak light outage suspended play for 15 minutes and gave the hard working UCLA team a chance to rest up.  They came out of the delay on a mission and grabbed a quick goal, but could not get the tying goal past Stanford goalie, Otis "I don’t Eat Meat, but I do eat Rubber" Chodosh.  Stanford capped off the frenetic game with an empty net goal from team captain Max "Silky Smooth Hands" Guise.

The second tilt was an equally hard fought match that went down to the wire.  UCLA took an early lead in the hard hitting matchup, but Stanford leveled mid way through the first period, and soon took the lead off a goal from Dave "Mary, Row Your Boat Home" Creighton.  UCLA evened the game late in the first to leave it tied entering the second period.   The team traded goals before a late hit injured Stanford Asst. Capt James "Doodles" Dudley.   Alden "Timmaaaay" Timme also reported feeling injured from the hit, but Stanford team doctors attributed that to phantom pains often associated with twins.  The chipper referees assessed a game misconduct on the UCLA hitman and Stanford converted quickly to take a one goal lead.  UCLA rallied however, and tied the game on a late powerplay after a questionable penalty call on Stanford newcomer Chris "Cleanest Player Alive" Grieco.  A hard fought overtime ended scoreless thanks to Stanford’s defensive prowess lead by the recovered Dudley, and the tenacity of local blueliner Matty "If it’s not right it’s gotta be" Wong.  The shootout was all Cardinal, with Stanford stopper Chodosh turning away all four of UCLA’s penalties to give Stanford the win and the weekend sweep.

The Angry Christmas trees are now 5-1 (2-0 conf.) heading into weekend match ups with UC Davis (Home, Fri. 4:40pm) and Cal (Oakland Ice Center, Sat. 5:45pm) and are getting stronger under the tutelage of new assistant coach, Taku "Che Guevara" Ide who is incorporating revolutionary new tactics into the already strong Stanford squadron.
