GSB Outdoor Adventures Club

OA Weekend 2008

The Outdoor Adventures Club sponsors trips every fall that remain a favorite tradition among students on their way into this wild new environment. Lead by charismatic second year MBAs, usually somewhat expert in the trip activity and always expert in having a good time, the trips sample myriad outdoor adventure options the great state of California offers. The trips provide a great forum to interact with a small group of both MBA1s and MBA2s and are an excellent way to relax after the first few hectic days of school.

This year, OA Weekend will be held on September 26th - 28th. Trips will depart Friday afternoon and return around noon on Sunday (plenty of time to finish any work for Monday). More detailed information is available in the trip descriptions to the left.

We've included some answers to common questions, as well as a list of trip leaders, below. Should you have any additional questions please feel free to contact us. We hope to see you during OA Weekend!

Common Questions

How are these trips different from Outward Bound? Beginning in 2007, the administration began offering Outward Bound trips that take place before students arrive on campus. Our trips are different because they are entirely designed and lead by students, for students.  More importantly, our trips will provide you with a chance to interact with second-year students early in the year. This year’s OA leadership routinely heard from our peers that they wished there had been more interaction between the two classes (MBA1s and MBA2s) earlier in the school year. In fact, last year's MBA1s routinely pointed to OA Weekend as one of the best opportunities to bond with second-years. Historically, the OA leadership has reserved a certain percentage of participant slots on each trip for MBA2s to facilitate MBA1 / MBA2 interaction and we intend to do so again this year.

What is included in my registration fee? The trips are not cheap, but they are a great value. Your registration fee includes everything you could possibly need for the weekend, including transportation (and gas reimbursement if you help with carpooling), lodging, equipment rental, all meals, and drinks. We’ve worked hard to negotiate favorable rates and plan on a tight budget, but we also want to have a full menu of activities. Traditionally, trip leaders prepare the meals and wait on the first years hand and foot. Be on the lookout for mutiny this year.

Will trips fill up? In past years, most trips have filled up. Given capacity and planning contraints, we are not typically able to add space on most trips.

Can I bring my SO? Yes, SOs are welcome to join the trips. The cost for an SO is the same as the cost for a student and the registration process is the same. At the cart section of the registration there is an option to add another participant so that you and your SO can register together. If you register and later decide your SO would like to attend, the registration process for an SO is the same as for a student.
