Advanced Yosemite Backpacking
Spent too many nights on the road in the Four Seasons or Westin with your last job? Tired of having porters carry your suitcase up to your room? Well, trade in those feather beds for ThermaRests, and carry your own gear on the Advanced Backpacking Trip in Yosemite!

We’ll leave from Stanford on Friday after class and get to Yosemite in time to set up camp, and enjoy a hearty dinner. Not one, but two groups will be enjoying one of California’s natural wonders as we tackle Half Dome over the weekend. We will take the advanced route, a one-way, 25-mile trek from Tuolumne Meadows to Yosemite Valley on the famous John Muir Trail. Oh yeah, and we’ll bag Half Dome along the way. The most technically demanding section is the "Cables Route", where hikers of all experience levels are guided to the summit via hand cables and stairs mounted on Half Dome’s eastern slope. We’ll pack in all the gear (including food) that we’ll need for the trip. There’s no in room dining here, but you can rest assured that your trip leaders are experienced at cooking gourmet camp food with a whisper-lite stove.
Having hiked through mountain ranges all over the world, your leaders Tom and Sean put this as their best weekend trip ever. The views from this hike are the best in all of Yosemite and catching the sunset from above half dome can't be beat.
Difficulty Level: Advanced - this trek is intended for those with a high fitness level who are ready for a challenging hike while carrying a full pack. We’ll target the total mileage to be about 25 miles, with a large amount of elevation change. Previous hiking and backpacking experience is not required, but highly recommended, and of course we will be sleeping in tents.
Cost: $127, all inclusive.
Questions: feel free to e-mail Sean McCarthy or Tom Mercer directly should you have any questions. Note that both of us will be backpacking before school so it may take a while to get back to you. The OA Leadership team can answer most questions as well and you should feel free to reach out to them for a quicker response.
