*What is the award and what does it mean?*
This is the 14th year the Stanford GSB PhD Association will be awarding this honor. In an attempt to recognize efforts put forth by faculty, the
PhD Faculty Distinguished Service Award will be given to the professor who, through either teaching and/or advising, has distinguished him/herself in making exceptional contributions to the intellectual development of the Stanford GSB PhD student community.
*How is the winner determined?*
In an attempt to construct a fair and transparent selection
process as possible, the PhD Association has decided upon the
following selection mechanism:
Nomination Round
From April 21 - 27, students will be able to submit nominations. Nominations may be for any faculty member of a student's choosing --there are no area restrictions in making a nomination. However, each student may make only one nomination. This mechanism will be most effective if every student participates, so please take a minute to indicate your preferences. After the nomination period is closed, the PhD Association will report the single most-nominated faculty member in each academic area; these faculty will be the finalists for the award.
Representative Selection Round
Between April 27 to May 1, we would like the students from each academic area to elect one student who will represent them and their faculty nominee in the selection committee meeting on May 3 at 5pm (details below). Each group is required to inform PhD Association President Will Cong of their representative via email (wtsung@stanford.edu) no later than 5 pm on May 1. Please note that the chosen representative must be available to attend the selection committee meeting to be held on campus on May 3 at 5 pm.
Selection Committee Round
On May 3 at 5 pm, a PhD
student committee comprised of one elected student representative from
each area will decide who amongst the award finalists will receive the
award. The winner will not be chosen on the basis of number of
votes. Instead, evaluations will be made entirely on the basis of
comments submitted on the nomination form and during the committee
meeting. Be compelling in your nominations and group meetings! It is
important students persuasively articulate to the selection committee
how their nominee has contributed to the PhD community in ways that
have significantly enhanced students' intellectual and professional
development.

Note: It is the intention of the committee that faculty members will only be eligible for the award once every five years. The committee implores all interested students to submit a detailed nomination. We need to gather as much input as possible before determining the winner. Students may nominate faculty members who have made outstanding contributions during any point in their PhD career.
*How do I nominate a faculty member? *
We will send a link to the nomination survey on April 21, 2012. To nominate a faculty member, complete the online survey by 12:00 pm on Friday, April 27, 2012. Note that each student may only nominate one faculty member. If you have any questions, please contact your PhD Association President, Will Cong (wtsung@stanford.edu).
