In researching sustainable pathways and developing the Green Dorm, the Lotus Living Laboratory is dedicated to designing, working and documenting our processes. It is our hope that much of the work we carry out here at Stanford University, can inspire and support others in carrying out their own sustainable development projects. Through our process we have developed, appropriated and found particularly useful the following design and decision-making tools.
|Process, Organization and Product (POP) Modeling (Engin Ayaz, Martin Fischer, John Haymaker, Calvin Kam, John Kunz, Marc Ramsey, Ben Suter, Mauricio Toledo)
POP Modeling is a tool for organizing information, parsing priority and understanding connections between design process, team organization, and product quality. A technology developed by the Center for Integrated Facility Engineering at Stanford, POP models have been used extensively on our project for organizing meeting minutes and clarifying project goals.

Understanding the dependencies between the many simultaneous processes carried out by designers on any building project is complicated. As more advanced technology and detailed science is used to analyze design options for more and more complex buildings, difficulties in communication between project team members becomes more apparent. Professor John Haymaker has pioneered a new method for displaying the networked dependencies that exists between the various design processes. Narratives allow for the whole story, the whole design process to been seen from a high level, while the format also holds detailed information about each piece of the puzzle.
| Multi-Attribute Collective Decision Analysis for the Dorm Initiative (MACDADI) (Engin Ayaz, John Chachere, John Haymaker)
To achieve an integrated design, we need to manage and communicate a great deal of information and processes. We need to define goals, propose options, analyze these options with respect to the goals, and make decisions. This is a social process; we need to coordinate these processes and information amongst a wide range of team members and stakeholders. We designed and implemented MACDADI: a Multi-Attribute Collective Decision Analysis for the Design Initiative with the help of the design team towards the end of the feasibility stage. We collected, synthesized and hierarchically organized the project goals; we asked the stakeholders to establish their relative preference with respect to these goals; we collected and aggregated these preferences; we asked the design team to analyze the design options with respect to these goals; and the design team, stakeholders, and authors visualized and assessed these goals, options, preferences, and analyses to assist in a transparent and formal decision making process. We look to further develop and use MACDADI as a decision making and documenting tool in subsequent phases of the project.

Because we are committed to a high quality design process, as well as a high quality Green Dorm with innovative sustainable building systems, and in the spirit of experimentation and education, we are using and evaluating many design process and decision-making tools. The Process Tool Evaluation matrix allows us to rate our process tools according to how well they help us communicate with one another, integrate information from multiple stakeholders (or analyses or programs), and optimize our designs to meet our program goals.
