If you have a question but don't know what office to contact for assistance, make your first stop the Graduate Student Information Center. This center is in operation during the opening month of school from Tuesday, September 1 to Friday, September 25, 2009. The center provides general information about administrative, academic, and student life issues. If we don't know the answer to your question, we will contact the appropriate department and obtain the information for you or put you in touch with the best resource. We are here to make the opening days of autumn term a little easier for you.

In addition to helpful information, the center offers:

Problem Solving and Crisis Intervention - When students are in trouble—personally or academically—we seek to intervene quickly and effectively. The University's philosophy is to resolve conflicts as quickly, and as locally, as possible.


There are a number of programs and offices on campus that relate to an array of interests and needs. The Vice Provost for Student Affairs is the administrative home for many of these programs, with the respective information and links available on their website.

The Office of the Vice Provost for Graduate Education is dedicated to enhancing the quality of graduate education at Stanford University. VPGE staff work collaboratively throughout the University, providing academic leadership and resources on several fronts, such as facilitating interaction and innovation in graduate education across the schools within Stanford University, promoting best practices in diversifying the graduate student population, and experimenting with interdisciplinary initiatives that offer new learning opportunities for graduate students.

Privacy of Directory Information
The University's policy on the confidentiality of student records conforms to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, and is explained in detail in the Stanford Bulletin. Driving
To get to the campus:

  • From U.S. 101: Take the Embarcadero Road exit and drive about two miles. After crossing El Camino Real, Embarcadero Road becomes Galvez Street. This is the entrance to the Stanford campus. Get in the left lane and proceed to Campus Drive. This is the main street that circles the campus.

  • From Interstate 280: Take Alpine Road east and make a right onto Junipero Serra Boulevard. Turn left at the first traffic light onto Campus Drive.
Call your residence office or the Graduate Student Information Center to ask for driving directions to a specific building.

Campus Bicycle Coordinator

Marguerite Bus System
Stanford's free shuttles, called the Marguerite, are open to the public, no ID required. The buses will take you all around campus and to shopping in local communities. Commute Club
If you are commuting to campus, consider joining the Commute Club instead of purchasing a parking permit. If you meet eligibility requirements, Stanford will pay you hundred of dollars a year not to commute alone to campus during normal business hours. In addition, Commute Club members receive up to $96 in Zipcar credit, up to 12 free hourly car rental vouchers, and more! Parking Permits
Parking and Transportation Services sells parking permits for resident and non-resident students. Avoid long lines in September and October by applying online. Purchase your parking permit in one of the following ways:

    Short-Term Voice Mail
    Stanford University Communication and Networking Services provides Short-Term Voice Mail service for a modest fee for students without their own telephone line. When you subscribe to Short-Term Voice Mail, you receive your own mailbox with a dedicated telephone number and the ability to record a personal greeting. You can then give your mailbox phone number out to anyone who needs to leave you a personal message. You can retrieve messages from any on- or off-campus telephone any time of the day or night.

    The GSC is elected each spring from various districts of the graduate population and is also open to any graduate student who wishes to join. It hosts event for all graduate students, advocates for graduate students on issues such as housing and health care, allocates student fee money to graduate student organizations, and provides services for all graduate students.

    The Graduate Life Office is a division of the Office of the Vice Provost for Student Affairs. Three full-time staff administer the residence program for graduate students, plan welcome and on-going activities for students and student families, and serve as a resource and support for students who may experience personal difficulties. GLO advises the Graduate Student Programming Board and runs the Graduate Student Information Center.
